Wuhan University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first universities included in the national "211 Project" and "Double First-Class" construction. It is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport. The school's history originated from the Hubei Industrial School established in 1898. In the past 123 years, especially in the past 70 years, the school has trained more than 600,000 senior professionals. It is the largest school among the universities directly under the Ministry of Education to train talents for the three major industries of building materials, construction, transportation, and automobiles. It has become an important base for high-level talent training and scientific and technological innovation in my country's "three major industries". At present, the school has more than 36,000 undergraduate students, more than 20,000 doctoral and master students, and more than 900 international students.

The school currently has Mafangshan Campus, Yujiatou Campus and Nanhu Campus, covering an area of ​​more than 4,000 acres, with a total building area of ​​1.953 million square meters, and 4 modern libraries with a collection of 3.6151 million books. There are 24 colleges (departments) and 6 independent scientific research institutes. There are 5,441 faculty members, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, 1 academician of the Australian Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the European Academy of Sciences, 4 foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of Engineering, and 1 academician of the World Academy of Ceramics; 144 high-end talents supported by the talent plans of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education, and the Hubei Provincial Government.

The school has formed a discipline and professional system with engineering as the main subject, and science, engineering, economics, management, art, literature, law and other disciplines interpenetrating and developing in a coordinated manner. There are 22 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 45 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 17 postdoctoral research mobile stations; there are 3 doctoral professional degree authorization categories and 24 master's professional degree authorization categories. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, materials science and engineering received A+, and mechanical engineering, transportation engineering, design, Marxist theory and other disciplines received B+. There are 96 undergraduate majors, including 37 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 15 national characteristic majors, 28 pilot majors for excellent engineer education and training programs, 4 national comprehensive reform pilot majors, and 2 national strategic emerging industry majors. There are 40 national first-class undergraduate courses, 17 national quality resource sharing courses, and 8 national quality video open courses. It has 5 national teaching teams, 4 experimental areas for talent training models of the Ministry of Education, 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 13 national engineering practice education centers, 1 international demonstration college, and 1 national college practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base and national entrepreneurship incubation demonstration base.

In the past 10 years, the school has trained a group of national outstanding college students, 1 person won the "National Most Beautiful College Student", 2 people won the "China Youth May Fourth Medal", 4 people won the title of "China College Student of the Year", 4 people won the title of "China College Student Self-improvement Star Model", 15 people won the title of "China College Student Self-improvement Star", 6 people won the "China Youth Volunteer Outstanding Individual Award", and 5 people won the "China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award". In the 2020 National College Student Competition Rankings released by the China Higher Education Society, the school ranked 12th in the five rounds of the National College Student Competition Rankings (undergraduate) from 2016 to 2020, and ranked 14th in the National College Student Competition Rankings (undergraduate). The school's graduate employment rate has remained above 95% for nearly ten years, of which more than 50% of the total number of employees are employed in Fortune 500 companies and strategic emerging industries.

The school has 40 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research bases, including the National Key Laboratory of New Materials Composite Technology, the National Key Laboratory of Silicate Building Materials, the National Engineering Laboratory for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology, and the National Water Transport Safety Engineering Technology Research Center. It has also built three provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers, including the Ministry of Transport Collaborative Innovation Center for Inland Intelligent Shipping, the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Automotive Parts Technology, and the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Safety Warning and Emergency Linkage Technology. The school was approved as a pilot unit for the construction of a strong transportation nation, and was selected as one of the first national intellectual property demonstration universities and the second batch of colleges and universities' scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases. It has co-built 324 scientific and educational cooperation and achievement transformation institutions such as industry-education integration demonstration zones, science and education innovation parks, and industrial technology research institutes with local governments and industry enterprises. Since 2010, the school has won 2 National Natural Science Awards, 16 Technological Invention Awards and Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 72 provincial and ministerial first prizes and above as the first completing unit; as a participating unit, it won 1 National Science and Technology Progress Special Award and 2 First Prizes; 6,382 authorized invention patents; 2 papers published in the world's top academic journals Science and 5 papers published in Nature.

The school has established talent training, academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation with more than 190 universities and scientific research institutions in the United States, Britain, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, Russia, the Netherlands and other countries, and has hired more than 200 famous foreign scholars as strategic scientists, visiting professors and honorary professors of the school. In addition, 16 high-level international research cooperation platforms have been established with famous foreign universities and research institutions. The school has established seven national and provincial international science and technology cooperation bases, including the International Joint Laboratory for New Materials Composite Technology, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Environmentally Friendly Building Materials, and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Intelligent Shipping and Maritime Safety. In 2016, the first overseas campus established by the school in cooperation with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK, was officially put into operation. In 2018, the school cooperated with the University of Aix-Marseille in France to establish the Wuhan University of Technology Aix-Marseille College.
