Huazhong Agricultural University

One of the starting points of higher agricultural education in China. The predecessor of the school was the Hubei Agricultural School founded by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in 1898 during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. After several evolutions, in 1952, all departments of Wuhan University Agricultural College and Hubei Agricultural College and some departments of agricultural colleges of six comprehensive universities such as Sun Yat-sen University were established to form Huazhong Agricultural College. In 1979, it was approved by the State Council as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1985, it was renamed Huazhong Agricultural University. In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it entered the ranks of the national "211 Project". In 2017, it was included in the ranks of the national "Double First-Class" construction.

The leaders of the Party and the State have shown cordial care. Dong Biwu, Li Xiannian and others successively wrote inscriptions and inscribed the school name. In 1998, Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People's Republic of China, wrote an inscription for the school's centenary celebration. In 2011, Hu Jintao, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People's Republic of China, listened to our school's report on the biological industry. In 2013, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People's Republic of China, wrote back to our school's "Benyu Volunteer Service Team" and put forward the earnest exhortation of "walking with the motherland and dedicating to the people".

The campus environment is unique. The campus is located in the main urban area of ​​Wuhan City, Hubei Province. It is surrounded by Lion Mountain and three sides of the lake. It has a 5-square-kilometer mountain and water campus, 9 kilometers of romantic lakeshore, 10 kilometers of "Forest Road", and 6.6 kilometers of lake greenway. The environment is elegant and the scenery is beautiful. The campus style with a blend of scenery, culture, and emotions is fascinating.

The disciplines have obvious advantages and characteristics. Five disciplines, including biology, horticulture, animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, and agricultural and forestry economic management, have been selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline evaluation, 7 disciplines entered the A-level disciplines, among which 3 disciplines such as horticulture, animal husbandry, and veterinary medicine were A+, biology was A, and 3 disciplines such as food science and engineering, crop science, and agricultural and forestry economic management were A-. According to the statistics of the "Essential Science Indicators" database (ESI) of the American Information Technology Institute, 11 disciplines of our school entered the top 1% of ESI, and 2 disciplines entered the top 1‰, distributed in 5 categories such as agronomy, life sciences, science, engineering, and medicine. Among them, the disciplines that entered the top 1% (botany and zoology, agricultural science, biology and biochemistry, environmental science/ecology, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics) achieved full coverage of the two categories of agronomy and life sciences; the disciplines that entered the top 1‰ (botany and zoology, agricultural science) achieved full coverage of the agronomy category.

The education system is complete. There are 17 colleges (departments), 62 undergraduate majors, 28 first-level disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees, 16 master's professional degree authorization categories, 16 first-level disciplines authorized to grant doctoral degrees, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, and 15 postdoctoral research stations. There are 31,219 full-time students, including 18,906 undergraduates, 8,987 master's students, 2,891 doctoral students, and 435 international students.

A gathering of outstanding scholars. There are 3,013 faculty members, including 1,688 teachers, 527 professors, and 325 postdoctoral fellows. There are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the American Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Third World Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 26 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 24 winners of the National Excellent Youth Fund, 6 chief scientists of the 973 Program, 1 chief scientist of the modern agricultural industry technology system, and 59 post scientists. There are 4 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Groups and 76 Provincial and Ministerial Excellent Innovation Teams. There are 5 National Teaching Masters and 7 National Teaching Teams.

The education and teaching reform has been fruitful. A total of 24 national teaching achievement awards have been won, including 1 special prize, 4 first prizes and 19 second prizes. One national education system reform project, one national first batch of basic disciplines top students training plan 2.0 base, 6 national new agricultural research and reform practice projects, 5 national new engineering research and practice projects, 4 national new liberal arts research and reform practice projects, 23 national first-class professional construction sites, 2 national professional comprehensive reform pilot majors, 2 national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" majors, 8 national "Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program" majors, and 42 first-class national undergraduate courses. There are 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 6 agricultural science and education cooperation talent training bases of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, and 11 national off-campus practice bases for college students.

Strong scientific and technological strength. There are 2 national key laboratories, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 5 professional laboratories, 7 national R&D centers, 8 international science and technology cooperation bases, 29 ministerial and provincial key (engineering) laboratories, 35 ministerial and provincial R&D centers, 6 higher education discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases ("111" plan), 1 demonstration and promotion base for the introduction of foreign intellectual achievements, 35 school-enterprise co-construction laboratories (R&D centers), and 4 provincial key research bases for humanities and social sciences. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, 6,318 scientific research projects were approved with a funding of 4.373 billion yuan. In the research fields of hybrid rapeseed, green rice, high-quality breeding pigs, animal vaccines, high-quality citrus, test tube seed potatoes and corn, freshwater fish, etc., a number of landmark achievements that are well-known at home and abroad have been achieved.

Excellent achievements in spiritual civilization construction. Since 1996, the school has been rated as the best civilized unit in Hubei Province for ten consecutive times, and won the national advanced unit for spiritual civilization construction in 2005. Since 2008, it has been rated as a national civilized unit. In 2017, it was awarded the first National Civilized Campus, and in 2020 it was awarded this honorary title again.

Development Vision: By the middle of this century, when the school celebrates its 150th anniversary, the school will be built into a world-class university with distinctive characteristics.
