China Three Gorges University

Three Gorges University was established on May 25, 2000, approved by the Ministry of Education. The former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges College merged. The predecessor of the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang) was the Gezhouba Hydropower Engineering College established in 1978. It was successively affiliated to the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Electric Power Industry, and the State Power Corporation. In 1996, it merged with the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering to form the new Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, becoming an important part of the "211 Project" university construction. The former Hubei Three Gorges College was formed by the merger of the former Yichang Normal College, Yichang Medical College, and Yichang Vocational University in 1996.

The history of the school can be traced back to 1923. In 1978, it began to offer undergraduate education. It was one of the first batch of bachelor's degree awarding institutions in the country. In 1996, it began to offer master's degree education and in 1998, it began to train doctoral students. The school enrolls students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and more than 60 countries (regions), and has entered the first-class enrollment in the country.

The school has the right to award doctoral degrees, the qualifications to recommend outstanding undergraduates to study for master's degrees without examination, the qualifications of ethnic minority preparatory students, the qualifications to recruit international students and Chinese government scholarship students (CSC), the qualifications to recruit undergraduate clinical medicine majors (English-taught) international students in China, and the qualifications to recruit students from Hong Kong without examination.

The school is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Water Resources and the People's Government of Hubei Province, and is a university in the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education. In 2018, the school was listed as a "domestic first-class university construction university" by the Provincial People's Government, and three disciplines including water conservancy engineering, civil engineering, and electrical engineering were listed as "domestic first-class discipline construction disciplines". At present, Three Gorges University has developed into a comprehensive university with obvious characteristics and advantages in water conservancy and hydropower, strong comprehensive school-running strength, high social reputation and great development potential.

[Disciplines and Majors]
The school currently has 4 postdoctoral research stations, 4 first-level doctoral programs, 1 professional degree doctoral program, and 27 first-level master's programs; during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, 11 provincial key first-level disciplines were approved; during the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, 2 provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline groups were approved; during the "Fourteenth Five-Year Plan" period, 4 provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline groups were approved; there are 22 master's professional degree categories such as law, education, business administration, journalism and communication, electronic information, energy and power, and clinical medicine. Our university has 21 colleges and 78 undergraduate majors, covering nine disciplines: science, engineering, literature, medicine, economics, management, law, education, and art. Among them, there are 16 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 21 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 7 majors have passed professional certification; 5 national characteristic undergraduate majors, 10 provincial undergraduate brand majors; 7 majors approved for the National Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, 1 national undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot project; 9 provincial strategic emerging (pillar) industry plans, 6 provincial undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot projects, and 11 provincial "Jingchu Excellent Talents" collaborative education plan projects. 6 national first-class undergraduate courses and 30 provincial first-class undergraduate courses have been approved; 1 national quality course, 2 national quality video open courses, 1 national quality resource sharing course, 3 national planning textbooks (sets), 20 provincial quality courses, 4 provincial quality video open courses, and 8 provincial quality resource sharing courses. Approved 2 national-level "new engineering" research and reform practice projects and 1 national-level "new liberal arts" research and reform practice project. There are 2 national-level teaching teams, 10 provincial-level teaching teams; 12 provincial-level excellent grassroots teaching organizations; 2 provincial-level pilot colleges, and 1 provincial-level top innovative talent training pilot project. The school currently has 23,110 full-time undergraduate students and 6,466 doctoral and master's students.

[Faculty]
The school currently has 1,681 full-time teachers, including 327 professors, 688 associate professors, and 915 teachers with doctoral degrees; there is 1 member of the Discipline Evaluation Group (Water Conservancy Engineering Group) of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. There are 178 doctoral supervisors and 1,466 master's supervisors; it has the right to review the qualifications of professors in all disciplines. More than 180 candidates and experts have been approved for talent projects at the provincial and ministerial levels or above. The school has hired more than 200 experts, including Nobel Prize winner Mundell and 21 academicians, as part-time professors. The school is one of the "Top Ten Universities in Hubei Talent Work".

【Infrastructure】
The school covers an area of ​​more than 3,000 acres, with a total building area of ​​1.4 million square meters. There are 20 teaching experiment (training) centers of various types; 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experiment center, 7 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 2 provincial virtual simulation experiment centers; nearly 50,000 teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment, with a total value of 766 million yuan. There are 259 on-campus and off-campus practical teaching bases and industry-university-research cooperation bases, including 1 national off-campus practical education base for college students and 2 national engineering practice education centers; 4 provincial demonstration internship training bases and 3 provincial internship training bases. The library has a collection of more than 2.95 million paper books, 86,000 Chinese and foreign electronic journals, more than 1.5 million Chinese and foreign electronic books, more than 60 Chinese and foreign databases, and 60TB of various digital resources. The school is one of the first batch of 66 undergraduate colleges and universities in the country to be piloted for informatization by the Ministry of Education. It has built a wired and wireless integrated 10G campus network covering the entire school, and has successively won the "Advanced Unit for Informatization of Higher Education" and "Outstanding Contribution Award for 20 Years of China's Education and Scientific Research Computer Network Construction".

There are the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine's Pharmacology (Tumor) Research Level 3 Laboratory, Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission's Energy Storage New Materials Engineering Laboratory and Hubei Engineering Research Center for Smart Energy Technology. There are 10 provincial engineering technology research centers, including geological disaster prevention and control, building quality inspection equipment, microgrids, transmission lines, weak magnetic detection, farmland environment monitoring, biological enzymes, characteristic plant breeding, food colloids, and clean production of steroid drugs and derivatives. There are five key research bases for humanities and social sciences in Hubei universities, including the Three Gorges Culture and Regional Economic and Social Development Research Center, the Reservoir Immigration Research Center, the Regional Social Management Innovation and Development Research Center, the Bachu Art Development Research Center, and the Film and Television Culture and Industrial Development Research Center, as well as the Three Gorges Think Tank and the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era Research Center. There are 12 provincial school-enterprise R&D centers, including new graphite materials, citrus biological preservation and prevention, organic slow-release fertilizers, micromotors, and intelligent bubble water level gauges. The Hubei Phosphorus Chemical Industry Technology Research Institute was jointly established with enterprises, and there are more than 160 school-level scientific research institutions, including the Biotechnology Center and the Yichang Regional Non-metallic Functional Materials R&D and Comprehensive Service Center. The school has long adhered to the policy of open schooling and carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation. The school is a member of the United Nations Academic Impact, a permanent secretariat unit of the World University Alliance (N.E.W.S.), and a major initiator of the China Hubei-South Asia University Alliance. It has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with more than 170 universities in more than 60 countries and regions. The school is the largest university in Hubei Province in terms of the number of international students, the number of majors and the scale of English teaching. There are more than 1,500 international students in China. It is qualified to recruit international students in China with the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship (Confucius Institute Scholarship).
