Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It was established on May 26, 2000 by merging the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction. It is one of the key universities in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project", and is one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" universities.

Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a famous medical school with a history of more than 110 years. It is one of the birthplaces of modern medical education in my country. It is one of the first 10 medical schools of affiliated universities jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. It is one of the first pilot eight-year medical education institutions in the country. It is one of the first institutions in the country to implement the excellent physician education and training program. It is an innovative experimental zone for the training model of Sino-German medical education talents. It is one of the first two institutions in the country that have three national experimental teaching demonstration centers for basic medicine, clinical medicine, and preventive medicine.

The college currently has a basic medical school, a school of public health, a school of pharmacy, a school of medical and health management, a school of nursing, a department of forensic medicine, a reproductive health research institute, a school of stomatology, and 10 clinical schools (affiliated hospitals); it has 15 undergraduate majors, 67 master's degree authorization points, 10 doctoral degree authorization first-level disciplines, 64 doctoral degree authorization points, and 6 postdoctoral research mobile stations; it has 9 national key disciplines, 5 national key (cultivation) disciplines, and 61 national key clinical specialties. In the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Ministry of Education, public health and preventive medicine, biomedical engineering, clinical medicine, biology, and public administration were ranked A, of which public health and preventive medicine and biomedical engineering were ranked A+. All 12 medical and related disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, neuroscience and behavioral science, immunology, molecular biology and genetics, entered the top 1% of the ESI international subject ranking. Clinical medicine continues to maintain the top 1‰ of the ESI international subject ranking, and pharmacology and toxicology are in the top 1‰. Basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health and preventive science are shortlisted for the national first-class discipline construction list.

The college actively implements the "talent-strengthening college" strategy and has a strong faculty. There are more than 2,000 full-time teachers, including more than 660 professors and more than 830 associate professors. There are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 chief scientists of the "973 Program", 5 national teaching masters, 23 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 11 selected candidates of the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project, 17 winners of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, and 55 selected candidates of the New Century Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education.

The college adheres to the "student-centered education", builds and improves a vibrant medical innovation talent training system, and creates a shining business card of "Study Medicine at Tongji". There are currently more than 10,000 students, including more than 4,400 undergraduates, more than 5,500 postgraduates, and more than 550 international students. The college has 3 national teaching teams, 4 national characteristic majors, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers, 15 national boutique courses, 15 national boutique resource sharing courses, 7 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses, and 3 national boutique video open courses. It has edited 114 national textbooks of various types and won 9 national teaching achievement awards. Over the past 110 years since its establishment, the college has trained more than 90,000 medical and health talents for the country. Academicians Wu Mengchao and Hou Yunde, winners of the National Highest Science and Technology Award, Qiu Fazu, Wu Min, Lu Daopei, Zhang Disheng, Zhou Honghao, Hu Shengshou, Yang Baofeng, Chen Xiaoping, Martin, Wu Tangchun, winner of the national honorary title of "People's Hero", Zhang Dingyu, academicians of the National Academy of Medicine of the United States, Hu Bingchang and Ming Guoli, and Wu Zhongbi, academician of the German Academy of Natural Sciences, are all outstanding alumni representatives trained by our college.

The college gives full play to the multidisciplinary advantages of a comprehensive university, adheres to the forefront of international medical science, faces the development needs of Healthy China, actively promotes the connection between health and technology, health and society, and combines basic and clinical medicine, and builds and improves key scientific research platforms covering basic medicine, preventive medicine, clinical medicine and other disciplines. There are 3 national scientific research bases, 35 ministerial and provincial key scientific research bases, and 31 Hubei Provincial Clinical Medicine Centers. A total of 3 innovation groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and 20 innovation groups of Hubei Province have been approved. More than 20 national three major science and technology awards have been won. Since 2000, the college has undertaken more than 200 national "973 Program" projects, national "863 Program", national science and technology support program projects, national major science and technology special projects, and national key research and development program projects, with a total of nearly 3.5 billion yuan in research funds. Since 2017, the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects approved for five consecutive years has exceeded 350, ranking among the top medical schools in the country.

The affiliated Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large modern comprehensive hospitals integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and training. They are the medical center in the central region and the ultimate regional diagnosis and treatment hospital. Their comprehensive strength ranks among the top in the country. The affiliated Liyuan Hospital highlights the characteristics of geriatrics and is the Hubei Provincial Geriatric Prevention and Treatment Research Center. Since 2016, according to the co-construction and co-management model of the province and the city, the college has integrated high-quality medical and teaching resources, expanded 7 powerful specialized hospitals and distinctive general hospitals into co-constructed affiliated hospitals, and added Wuhan Central Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Wuhan Children's Hospital, Hubei Cancer Hospital, Wuhan Mental Health Center, Hubei Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. The college started from the German Medical School founded by German physician Dr. Paulon in Shanghai. Due to historical origins, the college has always placed cooperation and exchanges with Germany in an important position, and established the working idea of ​​"focusing on Germany, conducting international exchanges in an all-round, multi-level and multi-channel manner". Since the reform and opening up, the school has established long-term friendly cooperative relations with more than 40 universities, hospitals, research institutions and other international organizations in more than 20 countries and regions such as Germany, the United States, Britain, France, and Japan, signed more than 40 international inter-school cooperation agreements, and jointly built 8 Sino-foreign cooperative scientific research bases.
