Wuhan Institute of Technology is a teaching and research university with engineering as its main discipline, covering nine disciplines including engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, art, medicine, and education.

Wuhan Institute of Technology is known as the "cradle of high-level chemical talents" and is a "greening red flag unit" and "ecological garden-style school" in Hubei Province. The first-time employment rate of graduates remains above 93%, and the undergraduate further study rate is above 30%. The school was founded in June 1972 and was formerly known as Hubei Institute of Chemical Technology and Petroleum, which was affiliated to Hubei Province. In March 1980, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Wuhan Institute of Chemical Technology and was supervised by the former Ministry of Chemical Industry. In July 1998, with the adjustment of the university management system, the school was transferred to the management of Hubei Province, and the central and local governments jointly built it, with Hubei Province as the main management. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hubei Province, the school was renamed Wuhan University of Technology.

The school has now developed into a multidisciplinary teaching and research university with engineering as the main subject, covering nine major disciplines of engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, art, medicine, and education. It is a key university in Hubei Province and a university with chemical engineering as its distinctive educational feature. The school obtained the right to confer master's degrees in 1998; passed the undergraduate teaching work level assessment of the Ministry of Education with excellent results in 2006; was selected as the basic capacity building project of colleges and universities in central and western China in 2012; was determined as a doctoral degree conferring institution by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council in 2013; entered the ranks of first-class universities as a whole in 2014; was selected as a first-class discipline construction university in Hubei Province in 2018, and three disciplines of chemistry, materials science and engineering entered the top 1% of ESI in the world; ranked 126th in the 2019 Soft Science "China's Best University Ranking"; ranked 92nd among universities in mainland China and first among universities in Hubei Province in the USNews 2021 World University Rankings.

The school currently has undergraduate education, graduate education and international education, with the right to confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees (69 majors, 22 first-level discipline master's programs, and 2 first-level discipline doctoral programs), and recruits first-class students nationwide. There are 25,000 full-time students, including more than 5,000 graduate students and nearly 20,000 undergraduates.

The school currently has 2,152 faculty members, including 1,325 full-time teaching and research personnel. Among the teachers, 243 have senior professional titles, 619 have associate senior professional titles, and the number of teachers with doctoral degrees accounts for 58.6% of the total number of teachers.

The school currently has two campuses, Wuchang and Liufang, covering a total area of ​​about 1.193 million square meters; the school building area is 795,000 square meters; and the fixed assets are 2.07 billion yuan. There are 3 400-meter standard track and field stadiums, 1 standard swimming pool, 75 basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis courts; 255 multimedia classrooms, 50 teaching laboratories; the total value of teaching equipment is 556 million yuan; the library has a collection of more than 4 million books (including electronic books), and is an "excellent library" and "Hubei research-level document collection unit" of Hubei universities; student apartments are equipped with air conditioning and boiling water and hot water supply facilities. It has Class A design qualification in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries (chemical engineering), Class A consulting qualification in the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries (chemical engineering), design qualification for special equipment (pressure vessels), Class B qualification for geological disaster control engineering design, Class B qualification for geological disaster control engineering exploration, Class B qualification for geological disaster hazard assessment, Class C qualification for construction engineering, testing and measurement certification qualification, energy-saving testing qualification, and Hubei Province's six major systems for metal and non-metal underground mine safety and risk avoidance design and construction qualifications. Four majors, namely, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering, and Mineral Processing Engineering, have successively passed the engineering education certification conducted by the Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education, and six newly applied certification majors have been accepted by the Ministry of Education. It has the Hubei Provincial Petroleum Products and Chemical Reagent Quality Supervision and Inspection Station and the Hubei Petrochemical Information Center, and is a designated unit for the Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology for chemical and chemical industry retrieval. The school and the Wuhan Municipal People's Government jointly established the Wuhan Chemical New Materials Industrial Technology Research Institute, which is the only industrial technology research institute in Wuhan located in a provincial university.

It has launched a series of cooperation in cooperative education, student exchange, teacher exchange, joint scientific research, etc.; more than 100 world-renowned scientists and foreign experts and scholars are invited to give lectures and visit the school every year. Every year, a large number of professional teachers and managers are sent abroad for study, degree study, cooperative exchange research or to participate in international academic conferences to understand the cutting-edge information of discipline development and conduct scientific research cooperation. The school is qualified to recruit international students.
