Hubei is the hometown of the famous medical scientist Li Shizhen. Hubei University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1958 and is the only undergraduate college of Chinese medicine in Hubei Province. Its predecessor was the Hubei Provincial School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was founded in 1954. In 2003, the former Hubei College of Chinese Medicine and the former Hubei Pharmaceutical Inspection College merged to form the new Hubei College of Chinese Medicine, which was renamed Hubei University of Chinese Medicine in March 2010. The school is one of the earliest universities in my country to offer undergraduate and graduate education in Chinese medicine. It is an excellent school in the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education. It is the first provincial university in Hubei Province to have the right to confer doctoral degrees in first-level disciplines, and the first provincial university in Hubei Province to have a postdoctoral research mobile station. It is also a university jointly built by the Hubei Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and a "domestic first-class discipline construction university" in Hubei Province.

The school is located in Wuhan, a city in the Yangtze River. It has two campuses, covering a total area of ​​1,610 acres and a total building area of ​​543,000 square meters. The Tanhualin Campus is located in the central urban area of ​​Wuchang, with a strong historical and cultural heritage, simple and elegant, and full of books; the Huangjia Lake Campus is a landscape garden-style campus with complete modern functions, majestic and beautiful. The school has teaching and scientific research equipment with a total value of about 223 million yuan, and a collection of 1.555 million paper books and 1.447 million electronic books. The school headquarters currently has 1,210 faculty and staff, including 737 full-time teachers and 539 with senior professional titles; there are 17,800 full-time students in ordinary colleges and universities, including 15,000 undergraduates, 2,195 postgraduates, and 215 international students.

In the course of more than 60 years of running schools, the school has carried forward the Shizhen spirit of "seeking truth and being diligent and knowledgeable", adhered to the school philosophy of "giving equal importance to inheritance and innovation, integrating science and humanities", and upheld the school motto of "diligence, truth-seeking, exploration and innovation". It has achieved fruitful results in talent training, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation. So far, more than 100,000 graduates have been trained, and a group of well-known alumni have emerged, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, academicians of the Eurasian Academy of Sciences, chief scientists of the 973 Chinese Medicine Project, and Yangtze River Scholars.

The school has a complete range of educational levels, covering undergraduate, master, and doctoral education; the types of education are relatively rich, covering full-time education in domestic ordinary colleges and universities, overseas student education, and adult continuing education. The school currently has 35 undergraduate majors, covering 7 disciplines including medicine, science, engineering, management, literature, education, and economics. There are currently 3 doctoral degree authorization points (including 2 first-level doctoral degree authorization points in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point in Traditional Chinese Medicine); 13 master's degree authorization points (including 7 first-level master's degree authorization points in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, Pharmacy, Management Science and Engineering, Nursing and Medical Technology, and 6 master's professional degree authorization points in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nursing, Translation, Pharmacy and Public Administration). There are currently 2 first-level postdoctoral mobile stations in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school continues to strengthen its position as a talent training center, and has 3 featured majors of the Ministry of Education, 4 provincial brand majors, 5 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 10 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 14 provincial excellent teaching teams, and 15 provincial excellent grassroots teaching organizations. It has 2 national first-class undergraduate courses and 12 provincial first-class undergraduate courses; 2 provincial ideological and political demonstration courses; 1 national boutique course and 11 provincial boutique courses; 1 national boutique resource sharing course and 8 provincial boutique resource sharing courses; 1 national boutique video open course and 3 provincial boutique video open courses; 3 provincial boutique online open courses.

The school continuously optimizes the discipline structure, condenses the discipline direction, strengthens the cross-disciplinary integration, and promotes characteristic development. The school's clinical medicine discipline has entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school currently has 15 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine has been selected as a "domestic first-class discipline" construction discipline in Hubei Province; it has 3 provincial key first-level disciplines and 2 provincial advantageous discipline groups; it has 5 key specialties of the National Health Commission, 9 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 20 provincial key specialties. The construction of clinical specialties has achieved remarkable results, and the Department of Hepatology and the Department of Nephrology have entered the ranks of national regional diagnosis and treatment centers.

The school has 1 key laboratory of Chinese medicine resources and Chinese medicine compound of the Ministry of Education, 2 third-level laboratories of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 key research room of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 key laboratory of Chinese medicine resources and Chinese medicine chemistry of Hubei Province, 3 Hubei Engineering Technology Research Centers, 1 authentic medicinal materials and innovative Chinese medicine new product research and development technology innovation base, 1 international cooperation base for acupuncture and moxibustion to prevent diseases, 2 Hubei Collaborative Innovation Centers and other 16 provincial and Wuhan scientific research platforms. The school is a national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine-the base for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases with traditional Chinese medicine, the chairman unit of the national industrial technology innovation strategic key cultivation alliance, the national epidemic prevention and control construction center, the chairman unit of the Hubei Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, and the supporting unit of the Hubei Provincial Industrial Technology Innovation Base Authentic Medicinal Materials and Innovative Chinese Medicine New Product Research and Development Technology Innovation Base. The school gives full play to the unique advantages of TCM and actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation. The school is the first batch of universities in the country that can accept foreign students under certain conditions, and it is also the first batch of provincial universities in our province to carry out Sino-foreign cooperative education. The university is qualified to recruit undergraduate and graduate students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, covering undergraduate, master and doctoral students; it has established cooperative relations with more than 80 universities, academic groups and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions. The school actively responds to the national "Belt and Road" initiative to promote the development of Chinese medicine overseas. It selects teaching and clinical backbones to study abroad, participate in academic exchanges, and carry out international cooperation and scientific research cooperation. Relying on the special project of international cooperation in Chinese medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the school has built the "Foreign Exchange Base for Teaching and Management Personnel of Chinese Medicine Colleges and Universities" and the "China-Malaysia (Malaysia) Chinese Medicine Center". The Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine affiliated to the school selects Chinese medicine experts to perform medical assistance tasks in Africa, and actively undertakes the construction cooperation project of the "Chinese Medicine Center" between China (Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine) and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria (Ben Akron Hospital).

In recent years, the school has shown a good development trend in teaching, scientific research, talent team, discipline construction, party building and ideological and political work. Professor Mei Guoqiang, a master of traditional Chinese medicine, guided the completion of "Pneumonia No. 1" and "Strong Pneumonia No. 1"; Professor Lv Wenliang took the lead in compiling and publishing a simple manual for home prevention and maintenance of traditional Chinese medicine for COVID-19, and presided over the "Major Project for COVID-19 Prevention and Control" of the Ministry of Science and Technology; Professor Lu Dingbo of the affiliated Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was awarded the honorary title of "National Advanced Individual in Fighting COVID-19"; Professor Wang Ping took the lead in editing the special issue of "100 Questions on Traditional Chinese Medicine Against COVID-19", which was distributed to more than a dozen countries around the world by Hubei Daily Media Group; 1 teacher was awarded the title of "Advanced Individual in Fighting COVID-19 in Hubei Province".
