Hubei University for Nationalities is a provincial general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education, focusing on undergraduate education. It is a provincial key university and a university jointly built by the provincial government and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. The school adheres to the school motto of "erudition, fraternity, establishment, and achievement" and the spirit of "hard work, dedication, self-improvement, and pursuit of excellence". It insists on the school-running positioning of "based in Hubei, facing the west, radiating across the country, and serving the grassroots", and always practices the school-running purpose of "serving ethnic minorities and ethnic regions, and serving the national development strategy". It has formed a distinctive school-running feature in talent training, scientific research, social services, and cultural inheritance and innovation.

The school is located in the magical and beautiful Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It is connected to Jingchu in the east, Xiaoxiang in the south, Chongqing and Guizhou in the west, and Shaanxi and Chongqing in the north. The campus is surrounded by mountains and rivers, and the beautiful scenery of Longdong River complements each other. It covers an area of ​​nearly 1,600 acres, with teaching and scientific research equipment worth 325 million yuan, a collection of more than 2 million books, a complete modern electronic book system, and more than 3.2 million electronic books.

The history of Hubei University for Nationalities can be traced back to the Hubei Provincial Lianzhong Rural Normal School established in 1938, which was later changed to Hubei Provincial No. 7 Normal School. In 1950, it was renamed Enshi Normal School, and in 1978, Enshi Normal College was established. In 1984, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, the Western Hubei University was planned to be established on the basis of Enshi Teachers College. On April 6, 1984, Comrade Hu Yaobang, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, wrote the name of the school for Western Hubei University. In 1989, it was accepted by the former State Education Commission and named Hubei University for Nationalities, becoming a general undergraduate college. Enshi Medical College was founded in 1958 and started undergraduate medical education in 1977. In 1998, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Hubei University for Nationalities and Enshi Medical College merged to form the new Hubei University for Nationalities. In November 2018, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Hubei University for Nationalities.

The school currently has 19 colleges (departments), including the School of Medicine, the School of Literature and Media, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the School of Intelligent Science and Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Biological Sciences and Technology, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Physical Education, the School of Fine Arts and Design, the School of Music and Dance, the School of Law, the School of Marxism, the School of Teacher Education, the School of Ethnology and Sociology, the School of Forestry and Horticulture, the School of Clinical Medicine, the School of International Education, and the School of Continuing Education, one directly affiliated tertiary-level A general hospital (affiliated to Minda Hospital), and two non-directly affiliated tertiary-level A general hospitals (affiliated to Enshi Prefecture Central Hospital and affiliated to Jingmen First People's Hospital). In 2021, there are 54 undergraduate majors, covering ten major disciplines: economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art; there are 8 first-level master's degree programs in ethnology, mathematics, chemical engineering and technology, forestry, traditional Chinese medicine, food science and engineering, Chinese language and literature, and Marxist theory, and 11 professional degree master's degree programs in applied statistics, law, sports, translation, journalism and communication, energy and power, electronic information, clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, accounting, and art.

The school adheres to the central position of talent training and the core position of undergraduate education and teaching, and the talent training capacity and training quality are constantly improving. In 1999, 2004, and 2017, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching work qualification evaluation, undergraduate teaching work level evaluation, and undergraduate teaching review evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The school currently has 15 national undergraduate education and teaching quality engineering projects (points), including 3 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 national characteristic majors, 1 national comprehensive professional reform pilot, 1 national excellent agricultural and forestry talent education and training plan reform pilot, 1 national excellent doctor (traditional Chinese medicine) education and training plan reform pilot, 1 national college student off-campus practical education base, and 3 national new engineering and new agricultural science education reform projects. There are 118 provincial and ministerial undergraduate education and teaching quality engineering projects (points), including 18 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points, 25 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 28 projects such as brand majors and comprehensive reform pilot projects of Hubei ordinary undergraduate colleges, "Jingchu Excellent Talents" projects, and strategic emerging (pillar) industry talents, 20 practical teaching platforms such as provincial (key) experimental training teaching demonstration centers, college student innovation activities and entrepreneurship demonstration bases, 12 provincial teaching teams, and 15 provincial excellent grassroots teaching organizations. In the recent two Hubei Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, it won 6 first prizes. There is 1 provincial graduate education innovation base, 9 provincial graduate workstations, and 12 provincial key disciplines. There are 13 disciplines with posts in the Hubei "Chutian Scholars" plan, and there are currently 9 "Chutian Scholars" employees. There are 11 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, key bases for humanities and social sciences, industrial technology innovation bases, technology promotion centers, and ethnic theory and policy research bases, 1 Hubei "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center", and 1 Hubei Social Science Popularization Education Base.

The school has a well-structured and well-qualified faculty. The school currently has 1,114 full-time teachers, 367 of whom have doctoral degrees, including 139 professors. There are more than 50 national and provincial experts and talents.

The school conducts scientific research work closely in line with national and local economic and social development. In the past five years, the university has undertaken 230 scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 2 national key projects, won 28 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, published 122 academic monographs, published more than 1,400 high-level academic papers, and obtained 85 authorized invention patents. The Journal of Hubei University for Nationalities (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) was selected as a CSSCI source journal (extended edition) and the 2014 and 2020 editions of Peking University Chinese core journals.

The school recruits students from 24 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country, and currently has more than 20,000 full-time students. The school has trained and sent more than 100,000 professional and technical personnel of various types to the society, and has made outstanding contributions to the economic and social development of the country, especially the ethnic minority areas of Hubei.

During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the school established 1,484 college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects, and was approved for 102 national college student innovation and entrepreneurship training programs and 303 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship training programs. Students have won 1,892 awards in various disciplines, including 86 national awards and 1,255 provincial awards. Students have published 191 academic papers and obtained 35 authorized patents (including software copyrights). In the past two national traditional sports games for ethnic minorities, students of the school have won 8 first prizes, 6 second prizes, and 12 third prizes in stilt racing, skateboard racing, spinning tops, and performances. The "Tu Miao Brothers and Sisters Group" composed of teachers and students of the school participated in the 13th CCTV Young Singer TV Grand Prix, won the gold medal for original ecological singing and the audience's favorite singer award, and performed at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo. The Hubei folk song and dance "Early Spring in the Mountain Village", performed by 21 students of the school, appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala; the school was invited to participate in the "Flowers in May-National College Students' Campus Art Festival" hosted by CCTV ten times. The "Colorful National Harmonious People's College" National Culture Festival won the first prize for the national college campus cultural construction achievements.
