Hanjiang Normal University is a full-time provincial general college run by the state. Its predecessor was the Hubei Yunyang Prefecture Normal School founded in 1904, and its cultural heritage can be traced back to the Yunshan Academy during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. The school was founded in 1954, and college classes were opened in 1975. In 1977, it became the Yunyang Branch of Central China Normal University. In December 1978, it was approved by the State Council to establish Yunyang Normal College. In 1993, it was renamed Yunyang Normal College with the approval of the former State Education Commission. On March 22, 2016, the Ministry of Education approved the school to be upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Hanjiang Normal University.

The school is located in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, a new automobile city. It is close to the Taoist holy land Wudang Mountain, and is adjacent to Shennongjia, the roof of Central China, and Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source of the middle line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. There are two campuses in Shiyan and Danjiang, with a total area of ​​1,094 acres. The campus is lush with trees, green grass, elegant environment, and beautiful scenery. It has won the title of the top 400 afforestation units in the country and is an ideal place for studying and studying.

The school has 11 colleges, including the School of Education, the School of Literature, the School of Marxism, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of History, Culture and Tourism, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, the School of Physics and Electronic Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, the School of Art, and the School of Physical Education. There are 37 undergraduate majors and 9 junior college majors, covering liberal arts, science, engineering, teaching, law, economics, management, art and other disciplines, forming a pattern of coordinated development of non-teacher education majors based on teacher education majors. The school recruits students from 22 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country. There are more than 14,500 full-time students, including more than 9,000 undergraduates. At present, the school has 42 graduates, and has provided more than 100,000 specialized talents of various types who can "go down, stay, and do well" to the northwestern Hubei region, making great contributions to the local economic and social development.

The school has strong school-running strength. It has a high-quality and high-level teaching team. There are more than 600 full-time teachers, 236 teachers with senior professional titles, 411 teachers with master's degrees and above, 226 "dual-qualified" teachers, and 10 excellent teachers and experts at the national and provincial levels. More than 100 well-known scholars and doctoral supervisors from Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, Central China Normal University and other schools are employed as visiting professors, and foreign experts are employed to teach at the school all year round. The library has a collection of nearly 1.3 million paper books, and has a modern electronic book system and computer network service system. At present, the school has 6 on-campus teaching experimental centers (training bases), 130 experimental (training) rooms, 152 off-campus training bases, and an affiliated demonstration kindergarten integrating teaching, scientific research and internship training.

The school continues to improve its connotation construction. It has 2 key majors supported by the Central Finance, 3 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction projects, 4 provincial undergraduate teaching teams, 3 provincial excellent teaching grassroots organizations, 2 Hubei Provincial "Jingchu Excellent Teachers" Collaborative Education Plan projects, 2 Hubei Provincial Higher Education Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industry Talent Training Plan projects, and 2 Hubei Master Studios. There are 3 provincial excellent young and middle-aged innovation team construction projects, 16 "Chutian Skilled Master" teaching posts, and 15 provincial teaching achievement awards. It has 2 national-level boutique resource sharing courses, 11 provincial-level boutique courses, and 26 online open courses. It undertakes 38 "National Training Plan" projects and 14 Hubei Rural Teachers Quality Improvement Projects. The school's scientific research level has been continuously improved. Teachers have published 3,500 academic papers, published 170 academic monographs and textbooks, and won 109 provincial and municipal government awards for their research results. They have won more than 280 national, provincial, and municipal (department)-level teaching and scientific research projects, 4 major scientific and technological achievements appraisals from the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and more than 20 authorized patents.

The school actively provides intellectual support for local economic construction and social development, and has great advantages and characteristics in the field of humanities and social sciences, especially in the study of local culture centered on Wudang culture and Hanshui culture. In recent years, the school's scientific research work has been combined with the water quality protection of the water source area of ​​the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the ecological and cultural tourism circle in western Hubei, and the strategy of Shiyan to build a regional central city. The research results are fruitful and have made certain contributions to the promotion of Wudang culture, Checheng Shiyan, and Danjiang water resources. There are research institutions such as the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of General Colleges and Universities in Hubei Province (Hanshui Culture Research Base), the Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, the Research Center for Ecological Civilization Construction in the Middle Water Source Area of ​​the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and the Shiyan Science and Technology Innovation Team (Rare Medicinal Plant Breeding Innovation Team).

The school insists on keeping pace with the times, pioneering and innovating, focusing on the overall goal of building an applied undergraduate college, continuously promoting the modernization of governance capacity, vigorously developing teacher training majors such as preschool education and basic education, building regional teacher training and training bases, and further strengthening the training of vocational skills majors. The school was rated as a national model school for language and writing standardization, won the title of "Hubei Civilized Unit" for seven consecutive terms, and was awarded the first "Hubei Civilized Campus"; the school union was awarded the "National Model Workers' Home" by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, and the School of Foreign Languages ​​was awarded the "National Women's Civilized Post" by the National Women's "Women's Contribution" Activity Leading Group, and the "Red Pen Netizen Club" was rated as the first "National Excellent Network Column of Colleges and Universities" by the Ideological and Political Department of the Ministry of Education. Recently, the "Hubei Demonstration Ideological and Political Course Teaching Base" and the "Hubei Key Online Review Position" were settled in the school, and the Student Party Branch of the School of Foreign Languages ​​and the Faculty Party Branch of the School of Education were awarded the "National Model Branch for Party Building Work", and the student work quality projects received provincial key funding.
