Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is a higher education institution directly under the Ministry of Education, with economics, law, and management as its main disciplines, as well as nine disciplines including philosophy, literature, history, science, engineering, and art. It is a key university in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform Project, and has been selected into the list of world-class universities and first-class disciplines (abbreviated as "double first-class") construction universities and construction disciplines.

It has a profound historical heritage and seeks rapid development in a stable manner. The predecessor of the school, Zhongyuan University, was born in 1948 during the War of Liberation. It was founded by the Central Plains Bureau of the CPC Central Committee with Deng Xiaoping as the first secretary, and Chen Yi, the second secretary, served as the director of the preparatory committee. It is a "anti-Japanese" revolutionary university. During the adjustment of colleges and universities across the country, the School of Finance and Economics and the School of Political Science and Law of Zhongyuan University were used as the basis, and the high-quality financial, political and legal education resources of Henan University, Zhonghua University, Sun Yat-sen University, Hunan University, Guangxi University, Nanchang University and other colleges and universities in the six provinces of Central and South China were successively integrated. A large number of teachers with profound academic attainments and rich teaching and practical experience were gathered, and Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics and Zhongnan University of Political Science and Law were established in 1953. In 1958, Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics and Zhongnan University of Political Science and Law, Zhongnan Cadre School of Political Science and Law, and the Law Department of Wuhan University merged to form Hubei University. In 1971, Hubei University was renamed Hubei College of Finance and Economics. In January 1978, it was renamed Hubei University of Finance and Economics and became one of the first universities to resume the enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students. In January 1979, with the approval of the State Council, Hubei University of Finance and Economics was under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Finance and Hubei Province, with the Ministry of Finance as the main leader. In December 1984, based on the Law Department of Hubei University of Finance and Economics, Zhongnan University of Political Science and Law was restored and rebuilt, and was led by the Ministry of Justice. In September 1985, Hubei University of Finance and Economics was renamed Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics, and Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the school. In February 2000, the State Council approved the plan of the Ministry of Education, and Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics and Zhongnan University of Political Science and Law merged to form the new Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics on May 26, 2000. In September 2005, it entered the ranks of key universities in the national "211 Project"; in June 2011, it entered the ranks of key universities in the national "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project. In October 2012, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the People's Government of Hubei Province signed an agreement to jointly build Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics. In September 2017, it was selected into the list of "Double First-Class" construction universities and construction disciplines.

Strong faculty and remarkable scientific research results. The school currently has more than 2,400 faculty and staff, more than 1,400 full-time teachers, more than 300 professors, more than 560 associate professors, and more than 190 doctoral supervisors. There are 5 cultural celebrities and candidates for the "Four-Batch" Talent Project of the Central Propaganda Department, 9 candidates for the "National Hundred-Thousand Talent Project", 8 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 10 national model teachers, national outstanding teachers, national outstanding educators, and national university famous teachers, 82 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 31 candidates for the "New Century High-level Talent Project of Hubei Province", and 56 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Hubei Province and experts with special allowances from the provincial government. The school currently has more than 20,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 8,000 master's students, more than 1,300 doctoral students, more than 500 international students, and more than 6,500 continuing education students. There are 58 undergraduate majors, 17 first-level master's degree authorization points, 17 master's professional degree authorization points, 7 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, and 6 postdoctoral mobile stations; it has 4 national key disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, and 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers. It was selected as one of the first batch of "Excellent Legal Talent Training" bases of the Ministry of Education. As one of the founding members, it established the "Lige Alliance" of National University of Political Science and Law, took the lead in initiating the China First-Class Discipline Construction Alliance of Finance and Economics and was elected as the chairman unit.

The school highlights the "integration, innovation and openness" of talent training characteristics. It is the first in the country to set up three compulsory courses in economics, law, and management in colleges and universities. It has opened business English, legal English, legal news, economic news, forensic accounting, economic ethics, law and economics, economic investigation and other distinctive courses. At the same time, it has opened dual-degree talent training projects such as law-economics and economics-statistics, which effectively promotes the intersection, penetration and integration of the three interactive disciplines of economics, law and management. Actively explore the training mode of top innovative talents, set up Wenlan College, a special zone for talent training, and set up experimental classes for top innovative talents in economics, law, etc. in multiple colleges, with obvious construction results. Focus on creating the second classroom campus cultural activity brand such as academic research, innovation and entrepreneurship, humanities and arts, and public welfare volunteering. Strong sense of responsibility and deep and wide social service. The school insists on combining scientific research with social services, and has established a development strategy of "serving major strategies, focusing on advantageous areas, adhering to openness and collaboration, and producing first-class results". In the benign interaction with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, the State Administration of Taxation, the National Bureau of Statistics, the National Intellectual Property Administration, and the Development Research Center of the State Council, a number of first-class decision-making consulting results in the fields of fiscal reform, rule of law construction, financial innovation, intellectual property protection, and social governance have been produced, and a number of high-quality think tanks have been created. There are more than 20 high-level academic platforms, including 1 key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 1 innovation team of the Ministry of Education, 2 collaborative innovation centers of Hubei Province, 3 think tanks of the provincial Party committee, 8 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of Hubei Province, and industry research bases jointly established with the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate. In 2016, the school won the first place with 100 points in the comprehensive score ranking of MRPA evaluation of "211" university think tanks released by the China Think Tank Index; in 2018, 5 think tanks of the school were selected into the "CTTI Top 100 University Think Tanks List", ranking second in the number and quality of selected universities nationwide; currently, 6 think tanks of the school have been selected as CTTI source think tanks. Actively carry out social cooperation, improve the system and mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation in education and collaborative innovation, sign a cooperative school-running agreement with China Construction Bank, and establish the Construction Bank College of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, so as to realize the strong combination of banks and schools and build a new strategic cooperation alliance relationship between industry, academia and research. It undertakes the marking of the national Chinese Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination, the marking of the national judicial examination, the national accounting professional and technical qualification examination and other related work.

It has active external exchanges and a high level of internationalization. The school has established extensive cooperative relations with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions. It has co-established the Sino-Italian Law Research Center and Sino-Italian College with the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, and established the Serbian and Austrian branches of the Institute of Income Distribution and Modern Finance at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia and the University of Applied Sciences of Upper Austria. It has co-established the Sino-French Industrial Upgrading and Regional Finance Research Center with the Rennes Business School, and the Field Experimental Survey Research Center with the University of Nottingham. It actively supports teachers to carry out in-depth international scientific research cooperation projects, participate in the international research project "Scriptores iuris Romani" of the European Research Committee, and many professors serve as consulting experts for the World Bank loan project of the Ministry of Finance. It has initiated or joined multiple regional university alliances, and has held Sino-foreign cooperative master's degree programs and undergraduate education programs with the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy and Dongseo University in South Korea. The infrastructure is complete and the conditions for running a school are excellent. The school currently has two campuses. The Nanhu campus is located on the bank of the scenic Nanhu Lake, and the Shouyi campus is located under the historic Yellow Crane Tower. The school covers an area of ​​more than 2,800 acres and a construction area of ​​more than 1.2 million square meters. The library has more than 9.93 million books and books, 81 Chinese and foreign academic literature resource databases, and 416 sub-databases.
