Hubei Second Normal University is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, which is a thoroughfare connecting nine provinces. It is a provincial general undergraduate college with teacher education as its main feature, supported by disciplines such as education, science, engineering, literature, management, and art. It is one of the important bases for teacher education in Hubei Province. It is a pilot university for the Ministry of Education to promote the construction of the teacher team with artificial intelligence, the first batch of "Excellent Teacher Program" main training schools in Hubei Province, and the leading university of the "Hubei Province 2011 Program".

The predecessor of the school was the Hubei Provincial Education College founded in 1931. Hubei Industrial School and Hubei Economic Management Cadre College were merged in 2003 and 2009 respectively. In 2007, Hubei Second Normal University was established on the basis of Hubei Education College, setting a precedent for the transformation of provincial education colleges into general undergraduate colleges. The Hubei Provincial Primary and Secondary School Teachers' Business Guidance Organizations - Hubei Provincial General Education Cadre Training Center and Hubei Provincial Primary and Secondary School Teachers' Continuing Education Center are located in the school, playing an important role in serving and leading the reform and development of basic education in the province. Actively responding to the "Teacher Education Revitalization Action Plan", it was approved as the Hubei Branch of the Beijing Normal University Teacher Education Research Center, a key research base for humanities and social sciences in ordinary colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education. Together with the East Lake New Technology Development Zone, it created the "Optical Valley Teacher Education Comprehensive Reform Experimental Zone". In-depth strategic cooperation with the Provincial Sports Bureau to create a "model project" for the integration of sports and education. In the 90 years since its establishment, the school has trained more than 300,000 outstanding talents and made outstanding contributions to basic education and regional economic and social development. Since 2008, the school has jointly trained professional masters with universities such as Central China Normal University, Yangtze University, and Hubei Normal University.

The school is located in the core area of ​​China's Optics Valley, with beautiful mountains and rivers and convenient transportation. The campus covers an area of ​​1,723 acres and a building area of ​​490,200 square meters. There are 15 secondary colleges, 55 general undergraduate majors, and more than 17,000 full-time students. There are 1,246 faculty members, 829 full-time teachers, including 399 teachers with senior professional titles, 99 teachers employed as master's and doctoral supervisors at universities such as Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Central China Normal University, Yangtze University, and Hubei Normal University, and 42 teachers enjoy State Council subsidies, provincial government subsidies, and have won honorary titles such as National Excellent Teachers. A total of 80 high-level talents have been hired.

19 majors of the school have been approved as national and provincial first-class professional construction sites, including five majors such as primary education, Chinese language and literature, journalism, physics, and computer science and technology. Four majors, including primary education, Chinese language and literature, physics, and mathematics and applied mathematics, have been conditionally certified as second-level teachers. There are 24 national and provincial teaching teams, grassroots teaching organizations, and famous teacher studios represented by the first batch of "Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities", 5 national and provincial professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 9 provincial talent training plan projects, 15 provincial pilot colleges, experimental teaching demonstration centers, virtual simulation experimental teaching projects and internship training bases, 59 national and provincial first-class courses, high-quality resource sharing courses and famous teacher classrooms. Won the title of "National Language and Character Standardization Demonstration School". It has held teaching reform experimental classes such as Xingzhi Experimental Class, Compound Talent Experimental Class, and Innovative Talent Experimental Class, and jointly built Huawei Cloud College and Integrated Circuit Industry College to continuously improve the quality of talent training.

The school insists on taking teacher education and advanced energy storage material science and technology as the two provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines as the leader, combining basic education with the needs of regional economic and social development, and creating six major disciplines and professional clusters of teacher education, information technology, emerging industries and regional economy, bioengineering, new materials engineering, and cultural creativity. There are 3 provincial key disciplines, namely, pedagogy, applied economics, and computer science and technology, as well as 11 provincial scientific research platforms, including the Hubei Terahertz and Optoelectronics Academician Expert Workstation, Hubei Postgraduate Workstation, Hubei Key Laboratory for Purification and Application of Plant Anticancer Active Substances, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Basic Education Information Technology Services, Hubei Education Cloud Service Engineering Technology Research Center, and Hubei Environmental Purification Materials Engineering Technology Research Center. In recent years, the school has won 52 National Natural Science Foundation and Social Science Foundation projects, more than 180 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Provincial Science and Technology Support Plan, the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and the Provincial Social Science Foundation, more than 600 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects such as the Provincial Department of Education, the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and more than 200 patent authorizations and software copyrights. 19 provincial and ministerial awards, including the Hubei Science and Technology Progress Award and the Hubei Social Science Achievement Award.

The school has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and has established cooperative relations with more than 20 universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and other countries. It currently has Sino-foreign cooperative education projects such as electronic information science and technology, computer science and technology, and preschool education. At the same time, it selects college students to go abroad every year to participate in study tours, exchange students, social practice projects or long-term and short-term internships. The school is a designated university for overseas Chinese teacher volunteers designated by the Provincial Department of Education, and is a high-quality source school for Hanban. Every year, it selects outstanding students to carry out international Chinese education overseas.
