Nanyang Institute of Technology was formerly Nanyang University, which was approved by the Henan Provincial People's Government in May 1987. In January 1993, the State Education Commission approved the establishment of Nanyang Institute of Technology, and the former Zhang Zhongjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was incorporated. In May 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the upgrading of the institute to an undergraduate college, and implemented a system of co-construction by the province and the city, with the city as the main body. In recent years, the school has been approved as a school for the National Education Modernization Promotion Project Industry-Education Integration Project, a school for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, a national university with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, a pilot school for the Ministry of Education's computer-related professional system ability training, a makerspace of the Ministry of Science and Technology, a demonstration undergraduate college of applied technology in Henan Province, the first batch of Henan Province's university research institutes' dual innovation bases, and the first batch of "three-dimensional education" comprehensive reform pilot universities.
