Shenzhen University was established in 1983 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It shoulders the glorious mission of cultivating talents for the Special Economic Zone and exploring the path for the reform of national higher education. The central government, the Ministry of Education and local governments attach great importance to the construction of Shenzhen University. They organized Peking University to assist in the construction of Chinese and foreign language disciplines, Tsinghua University to assist in the construction of electronic and architectural disciplines, and Renmin University to assist in the construction of economic and legal disciplines. A large number of well-known scholars gathered at Shenzhen University. At the beginning of its establishment, the school was determined to reform the management system of colleges and universities, and actively explored scholarships, credit system, work-study programs, etc. It was the first in the country to implement the system of no guaranteed employment and two-way selection for graduates, and promoted the full-staff appointment system for faculty and staff and the social management reform of logistics departments, making important contributions to China's higher education reform. In the 39 years since its establishment, Shenzhen University has adhered to the school motto of "self-reliance, self-discipline, and self-improvement", closely followed the Special Administrative Region, and resolutely reformed and developed rapidly. The school continues to deepen the reform of the scientific research system, and the growth of scientific research projects and funds has been significant. In 2021, the total research funding exceeded 1.7 billion yuan; in 2021, there were 375 National Natural Science Foundation projects, and the number of projects was ranked second in Guangdong Province for five consecutive years. In 2021, 32 National Social Science Foundation projects were obtained, ranking among the top universities in Guangdong Province. 6,304 papers were included in SCI and 764 papers were included in SSCI. 1,004 patents were authorized, including 708 invention patents. "Journal of Shenzhen University (Science and Engineering Edition)" was rated as "China's Top 100 Science and Technology Journals" in 2018 and 2020 (evaluated every two years); "Journal of Shenzhen University (Humanities and Social Sciences Edition)" is a CSSCI source journal, a national university social science journal, a national Chinese core journal, and a Chinese humanities and social sciences core journal.

The school actively promotes "international talent training, international scientific research cooperation, international faculty construction, and international cultural exchange". At present, it has signed agreements with 280 overseas universities to carry out various forms of international cooperation such as student exchange, teacher training, scientific and technological exchanges, and cooperative education.
