Guangdong University of Technology is a provincial key university with engineering as its main discipline, combining engineering, science, economics, management, liberal arts, and arts, and developing in a multi-disciplinary coordinated manner. It is also a key university for the construction of Guangdong Province's high-level universities. It started undergraduate education in 1958 and was formed in 1995 by merging the former Guangdong Institute of Technology, Guangdong Institute of Machinery, and South China Institute of Construction (East Campus). In 2021, it ranked among the top 400 universities in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Soft Science, and ranked 35-50 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of Chinese mainland universities. U.S. News 2021 World University Rankings for Engineering ranked 39th in the mainland and 166th in the world.

The school is located in Guangzhou, a famous city in southern China. It has multiple campuses including University Town, Dongfeng Road, Longdong, Panyu, Shahe, Jieyang, etc. The campus covers a total area of ​​more than 4,200 acres and has a beautiful environment. At present, the school has 21 colleges, 4 public course teaching departments (centers), and 2 research institutes. It has 6 postdoctoral research stations, 4 provincial key disciplines at the first level, 6 provincial key disciplines at the first level, and 5 provincial key disciplines at the second level. Five disciplines, including engineering, materials science, computer science, chemistry, environmental science and ecology, have entered the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings, among which engineering has entered 1.08‰.

It has 82 undergraduate majors, 8 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 34 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 24 first-level master's degree authorization points, 95 second-level master's degree authorization points, 1 doctoral professional degree authorization point, 13 master's professional degree authorization points, and the right to apply for master's degree for people with equivalent academic qualifications. At present, there are more than 46,000 full-time students, including more than 36,000 undergraduates and nearly 10,000 postgraduates. It also recruits adult education students of different levels, students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and international students. Over the past 60 years, it has trained more than 400,000 specialized talents for the society. The employment rate of graduates has been among the top universities in Guangdong Province for many years.

In the past two sessions, the school has won 2 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 8 first prizes and 13 second prizes for provincial teaching achievements.

It has built an innovation and entrepreneurship education base of more than 20,000 square meters, and has won 7 national innovation and entrepreneurship titles such as the "National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Typical Experience University" of the Ministry of Education. The China Higher Education Society ranks 25th in the 2020 National General College Subject Competition Ranking. It takes the lead in promoting the construction of the Guangdong National Defense Science and Technology Industry Technology Achievement Industrialization Application Promotion Center.

It has established cooperative relations with more than 150 well-known universities and institutions at home and abroad, creating conditions and providing platforms for the internationalization of talent training, the internationalization of the faculty team, and the internationalization of scientific research work. Actively respond to the national "Belt and Road" initiative and promote the China-Pakistan Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence. There is currently one "Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Plan" ("111 Plan") of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and the Ministry of Education, one animation major in Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, and five undergraduate international classes in mechanical design, manufacturing and automation, electrical engineering and automation, civil engineering, computer science and technology, and business administration.
