The predecessor of Guangdong Medical University was the Zhanjiang Branch of Zhongshan Medical College, which was founded in 1958. In 1964, it was upgraded to a five-year medical undergraduate school and renamed Zhanjiang Medical College. In 1992, it was renamed Guangdong Medical College and in 2016, it was renamed Guangdong Medical University. In 1960, it was rated as an advanced unit in the national cultural and educational front. In 1978, two scientific research results were awarded by the National Science Conference. In 1986, it was awarded the right to confer master's degrees and was listed as a key university in Guangdong Province. In 1991, it won the first prize in the evaluation of the school-running level of Guangdong Province. In 2005, it was awarded "excellent" in the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education. In 2008, a postdoctoral research workstation was established. In 2012, it was approved to establish a science and technology search workstation of the Ministry of Education. In 2013, it was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit. In May 2015, the clinical medicine discipline entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In January 2016, the school entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In July 2020, pharmacology and toxicology entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In 2019, it passed the Ministry of Education's clinical medicine professional certification, which is valid for 6 years. In August 2021, it entered the key discipline construction university of Guangdong Province's high-level university construction plan. The school has also been included in two famous authoritative lists, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), a higher education research institution, and the USNews World University Rankings, an authoritative American authoritative ranking.

The school has a total area of ​​nearly 2,300 acres and consists of two parts: Zhanjiang Campus and Dongguan Campus. The Zhanjiang Campus is located in Zhanjiang, a coastal open city with a subtropical atmosphere; the Dongguan Campus was established in 2002 and is located in the beautiful Songshan Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park in Dongguan.

The school has carried out various exchanges and cooperation with more than 50 universities and research institutes in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Finland, Poland, Japan, Malaysia and other countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has successively joined the China-Russia Medical University Alliance, the "Belt and Road" Tropical Medicine Alliance, and the China-Finland Association of Applied Sciences Universities.
