Southern Medical University

The predecessor of Southern Medical University was the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. It was founded in 1951 and was identified as a national key university in 1979. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University. The school is the only medical school among the key universities in Guangdong Province's high-level university construction, the first batch of "ministerial and provincial" co-construction universities in the country and the only one in Guangdong Province. It is one of the first eight universities in the country to offer an eight-year undergraduate, master and doctoral program in clinical medicine, and the first batch of pilot universities in the country for the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program.

School scale: Enroll students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government) and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are 21 teaching institutions, 30 undergraduate majors, including 7 national specialty majors, 16 Guangdong specialty majors, 6 Guangdong famous majors, and 20 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. There are 14,100 full-time undergraduates, 7,692 postgraduates and 1,012 international students.

Discipline construction: The school has 5 national key and cultivation disciplines, 6 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 10 key disciplines of Guangdong Province; 9 disciplines are shortlisted in the top 1% of ESI worldwide, clinical medicine is shortlisted in the top 1‰ of ESI worldwide, and the overall ESI ranking ranks 52nd in the country. There are 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 16 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 14 master's professional degree authorization points, and 8 postdoctoral research mobile stations, forming a discipline system with medicine as the main subject and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, law, management, and education.

Talent training: The school is one of the 13 national universities that pilot eight-year medical education, and it is also the only independent medical school that offers eight-year medical education. It is also one of the first batch of pilot universities for "Excellent Doctor Education and Training" in the country. The "Basic Medicine Outstanding Student Training Base" was selected as the National Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0 Base. It has established friendly relations with 63 well-known universities, medical and research institutions in 21 countries and regions around the world. It has won 10 national teaching achievement awards and 41 provincial teaching achievement awards. In recent years, many academicians of the two academies, such as Hou Fanfan and Xia Zhaofan, have emerged among undergraduate graduates. In the national practicing physician qualification examination, the highest pass rate of clinical medicine ranked fourth in the country, and Chinese medicine ranked first in the country three times. In 2017, undergraduates won the first prize in the National Clinical Skills Competition and 28 national awards in the "Challenge Cup" series of competitions, including 7 gold medals in the National Entrepreneurship Plan Competition ("Small Challenge") for five consecutive sessions; 1 special prize and 4 first prizes in the National Academic Science and Technology Works Competition ("Big Challenge"). The results of the "Challenge Cup" series of competitions have been ranked among the top two in the country's medical universities for many years. Since 2015, 2 people have been shortlisted for the "China University Student of the Year" award, and 6 people have been named "Guangdong University Student of the Year" or nominated.

Faculty: The school currently has 239 people selected for national talent projects and 354 people selected for provincial talent projects, including: 4 academicians of the two academies, 6 dual-appointed academicians, 3 national teaching teams, 4 national teaching masters, 15 national overseas high-level talents, 21 Yangtze River Scholars, 19 national outstanding young talents, 12 national special support plans (3 young top talents), 20 national candidates for the "Million Talent Project", 6 young and middle-aged science and technology innovation leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 13 national "Excellent Youth".

Scientific research: The school has a total of 93 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as the National Key Laboratory, the National Clinical Medicine Research Center, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Brain and Brain-like Research Center, 2 innovation teams in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and 1 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group. It has won 18 national science and technology awards, 55 provincial and ministerial first prizes, and the number of national science and technology awards ranks first among Guangdong universities. For three consecutive five-year plans, it has taken the lead in undertaking major national science and technology projects for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. In 2021, it won 309 National Natural Science Foundation projects, ranking second among independent medical colleges in the country, and ranked among the top 30 in the country for six consecutive years. The Journal of Southern Medical University was selected into the echelon journal project of the "China Science and Technology Journal Excellence Action Plan", and won the title of "One Hundred Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals" for eight consecutive years. The comprehensive evaluation score ranks first among the journals of medical universities in the country.

Medical strength: There are 13 directly affiliated hospitals with a total of more than 13,000 beds and more than 15 million annual diagnosis and treatment services. It has 17 national key clinical specialties, 4 key specialties (diseases) of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 60 Guangdong Provincial key clinical specialties, 35 Guangdong Provincial high-level clinical key specialties, 13 Guangdong Provincial Medical Quality Control Centers, and built Guangdong Provincial Institute of Kidney Diseases, Guangdong Provincial Institute of Liver Diseases, Guangdong Provincial Institute of Orthopedics, and Guangdong Provincial Institute of Stomatology. Nanfang Hospital and Zhujiang Hospital were selected into the "Peak Plan" for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. Nanfang Hospital took the lead in building the National Trauma Regional Medical Center and the National Regional Traditional Chinese Medicine (Rheumatology) Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and was selected for the National Project to Improve the Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity of Difficult Diseases. The Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine was selected for the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance and Innovation Project.
