Jinan University

Jinan University is the first government-founded overseas Chinese university in China. The word "Jinan" comes from "Shangshu·Yu Gong": "Eastward to the sea, west to the quicksand, north to the south, and the sound of education reaches the four seas." It means facing Southeast Asia and spreading Chinese culture to the five continents and four seas. The school is currently a national "Double First-Class" university jointly built by the Central United Front Work Department, the Ministry of Education, and Guangdong Province, and is directly under the management of the Central United Front Work Department.

Jinan University is one of the oldest universities in China. The predecessor of the school was the Jinan School founded by the Qing government in Nanjing in 1906. It was later moved to Shanghai and renamed National Jinan University in 1927. During the Anti-Japanese War, it moved to Jianyang, Fujian. In 1946, it moved back to Shanghai and merged with Fudan University, Jiaotong University and other universities in August 1949. After the founding of New China, Jinan University was rebuilt in Guangzhou in 1958. It was suspended during the Cultural Revolution and resumed in Guangzhou in 1978. After the reform and opening up, the school developed rapidly. In June 1996, Jinan University became a national key university for the 21st century. In June 2015, the school was selected as a key university for high-level universities in Guangdong Province. In September 2017, the school was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. On October 24, 2018, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited Jinan University and delivered an important speech, hoping that Jinan University would adhere to its school-running characteristics, run the school better, and create better conditions for overseas Chinese to return to the motherland to study and inherit Chinese culture. In August 2019, the Central United Front Work Department, the Ministry of Education, and the People's Government of Guangdong Province decided to jointly build Jinan University. In February 2022, the school was selected as a national second-round "Double First-Class" university.

Jinan University, known as the "highest institution of overseas Chinese", adheres to the school motto of "loyalty, faith and respect", and focuses on cultivating talents with the excellent traditional moral culture of the Chinese nation. The school actively implements the school-running policy of "facing overseas, facing Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan". Since its establishment, it has trained more than 400,000 talents of various types from more than 170 countries and regions in five continents of the world and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It can be said that there are students all over the world.

As one of the oldest universities in China, Jinan University has an important position in the history of Chinese higher education: the first overseas Chinese higher education institution founded by the state, one of the century-old prestigious universities whose name has been used, one of the first universities in the country to try out the credit system, the first university to open a medical school in a comprehensive university, the first university to establish an institute for research on overseas Chinese issues, the first university to create business...

At present, the school has a full range of disciplines, including liberal arts, science, engineering, and medicine, with 38 colleges, 58 departments, and 27 directly affiliated research institutes (institutes); there are 105 undergraduate majors, 26 first-level discipline doctoral degree awarding points, 41 first-level discipline master's degree awarding points, and 32 professional degree authorization categories; there are 19 postdoctoral mobile stations and 1 postdoctoral research workstation.

In recent years, with the efforts of teachers and students, the school's discipline construction and strength have been significantly improved. At present, the school has 1 national "double first-class" construction discipline, 4 national key disciplines at the second level, 8 key disciplines at the second level of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, 2 key disciplines at the second level of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 22 key disciplines at the first level of Guangdong Province, 12 key disciplines at the second level of Guangdong Province, and 1 key interdisciplinary discipline at Guangdong Province. The school's 13 disciplines, including chemistry, clinical medicine, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, materials science, biology and biochemistry, agricultural science, environmental science/ecology, botany and zoology, molecular biology and genetics, general social sciences, neuroscience and behavior, and computer science, are among the top 1% in the ESI world rankings. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 30 first-level disciplines of the school were listed, ranking third among universities in the province, among which journalism and communication was rated A-, and applied economics, Chinese language and literature, biology, and business administration were rated B+.

The school has a strong faculty and optimized structure. There are 2,732 full-time teachers, including 8 academicians of the two academies (including dual appointments), 9 foreign academicians, 21 selected for the Ministry of Education's major talent projects, 43 outstanding young scientists and excellent young scientists, 48 ​​"Pearl River Scholars", 2 national teaching masters, 902 senior professional titles, 1,064 associate senior professional titles, 1,160 doctoral supervisors, and 2,218 master's supervisors.

The school currently has 45,180 full-time students, including 29,127 undergraduates, 16,053 postgraduates, and 13,580 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries. The school has a rich and colorful campus culture, wonderful club activities, and a strong atmosphere of innovation and entrepreneurship. Students have repeatedly achieved outstanding results in high-level competitions at home and abroad. Jinan athletes Su Bingtian, Chen Aisen, Xie Siyi and others have won glory for the country in major international competitions such as the Olympics. It has signed 707 academic exchange and cooperation agreements with 419 colleges and universities and cultural and scientific research institutions in 62 countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan on five continents. The school is a Chinese government scholarship institution for international students in China. It has set up 130 enrollment registration points in 77 countries around the world and has an international college that teaches all in English. In 2017, the Joint College of Jinan University and the University of Birmingham, which was approved by the Ministry of Education for enrollment, officially opened. In 2021, the Japanese College of Jinan University, which was recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, officially opened in Tokyo. There are 2,736 foreign students from 101 countries and regions, including 1,939 undergraduates and 268 postgraduates.

The school has five campuses in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, and the main campus is in Shipai, Guangzhou. The campus covers a total area of ​​2.143 million square meters, the school building area is 1.8101 million square meters, and the student dormitory area is 451,800 square meters.
