Founded in November 2001, Chongqing University of Foreign Studies is one of the first independent undergraduate colleges in China approved by the Ministry of Education and is included in the national general higher education enrollment plan. It has the right to confer bachelor's degrees and is jointly organized by Sichuan International Studies University and Chongqing Nanfang Group Co., Ltd.

Chongqing University of Foreign Studies was formerly the Chongqing Nanfang Translation College of Sichuan International Studies University. It is a full-time general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education. The college was founded in 2001, began to enroll students in 2002, was established as an independent college by the Ministry of Education in 2003, obtained the right to confer bachelor's degrees in 2011, and was converted into an independent private general undergraduate school at the end of 2020 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. After nearly 20 years of development, the school has become a multidisciplinary university with literature as its main discipline, language as its advantage, and literature, economics, management, art, engineering and other disciplines developing in a coordinated manner.

The school currently has 11 secondary colleges (departments), including the School of English, the School of Oriental Languages, the School of Western Languages, the School of International Business and Management, the School of International Chinese Education, the School of International Media, the School of Art, the School of Music, the Department of Ideological and Political Theory Teaching and Research, the Department of Physical Education and the School of Continuing Education. It offers 38 undergraduate majors, including English, Translation, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Arabic, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese International Education, International Economics and Trade, International Business, Business English, Engineering Management, Hotel Management, Cultural Industry Management, Journalism, Advertising, Communication, Network and New Media, Broadcasting and Hosting Art, Fine Arts, Painting, Environmental Design, Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Clothing and Costume Design, Music Performance, Musicology, Dance Performance, Software Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, International News and Communication, Financial Accounting Education, etc., and enrolls students from 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country.

The school has two campuses in Yubei and Qijiang. The Yubei campus is located in the Liangjiang New District of Chongqing, a national development zone, adjacent to the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. It has complete and well-equipped teaching, experimental training, sports and living facilities; the Qijiang campus is located in the eastern new town of Qijiang District, the eastern gate of Chongqing. It has built teaching buildings, training buildings, gymnasiums, standard track and field stadiums, student apartments, teacher apartments, hospitals, canteens, dining and performance centers and other supporting school facilities. The campus has a 1,200-meter-long and 100-meter-wide cherry blossom landscape avenue with nearly 10,000 cherry trees planted. The campus also has a Beichen Park with a variety of flowers and plants. The campus environment is beautiful, the air is fresh, and the functions are complete. It is a good place to study.

Both campuses of the school have modern graphic information centers with advanced facilities. The library has a rich collection of paper books, a modern electronic book reading platform, a full-text database and examination resources, etc. The school has built dual 10G core and 10G backbone, gathering 10G and 1G to the desktop, 10G fiber interconnection between Yubei Campus and Qijiang Campus, full coverage of wireless broadband network signals in the two campuses, and nearly 10,000 campus network information points, making it the first batch of "smart campus" pilot units of similar colleges in Chongqing.

More than 30% of the full-time teachers in the school have professional and technical positions of associate senior or above; 70% have master's and doctoral degrees. Among the teaching staff, there are more than 20 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, national higher education teaching teachers, national model teachers, national outstanding counselors, Chongqing subject leaders, Chongqing outstanding teachers, etc. In recent years, teachers have frequently shined in discipline competitions at the municipal level and above; teachers have successively undertaken nearly 100 national and Chongqing scientific research projects, published more than 100 monographs, translations, and textbooks, and published more than 1,000 academic papers and works.

The school fully implements the Party’s education policy, adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, focuses on talent training, and strives to build a five-in-one talent training system of "classroom teaching, internship training, social practice, subject competition, innovation and entrepreneurship". It actively explores the reform of the "foreign language +" talent training model and is committed to cultivating open, compound and application-oriented talents. The school continues to strengthen the construction of disciplines and majors. Foreign languages ​​and literature are listed as key construction (cultivation) disciplines in Chongqing. The English major and the Russian major are rated as first-class majors in Chongqing undergraduate colleges and universities. The three majors of English, Russian and Chinese international education are rated as Chongqing's characteristic majors. The school continues to improve the on-campus training and experimental facilities, and has built a digital language experimental teaching center (rated as the Chongqing University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center), an all-media experimental teaching center, an art creation center, and a stage practice center. The school actively promotes the integration of industry and education, and school-enterprise cooperation. It has jointly established the first "Intelligent Voice Translation College" in China with iFLYTEK Co., Ltd., and co-built the "Hualong Media Integration Industry College" with Chongqing Hualong Network Group, and co-built the "Chongqing Yangtze River Cultural and Creative College" with Wanwuyouling (Chongqing) Cultural and Creative Co., Ltd., and co-built the "Foreign Language Translation Talent Pool" with the Exit and Entry Administration of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau, and cooperated with Beijing Foreign Studies University to carry out the ETIC international talent training project, and co-built industrial park internship and training bases with Chongqing (National) Advertising Industrial Park, Chongqing Yubei District Linkong International Trade Demonstration Park, etc., and co-built corporate internship and training bases with Chongqing International Communication Center.

The school currently has more than 18,000 undergraduate students. Implement the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, continuously strengthen and improve students' ideological and political education and management work, and strive to improve students' professional ability and comprehensive quality. In recent years, the passing rate of students in the Level 4 and Level 8 foreign language majors and the admission rate of graduate students have increased year by year; students have won more than 1,000 awards in national and municipal disciplines, professional and cultural and sports competitions, and more than 200 special prizes, first, second, third prizes or top three prizes. Jike Junyi, a graduate of the School of Art, became popular in the music scene, Zhang Hongyu, a graduate of the School of International Business and Management, led 12,000 college students from more than 30 universities to start their own businesses, and Huang Chao, a graduate of the Class of 2017, was awarded the title of "National Self-improvement Star" by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the All-China Students' Federation. In 2021, Zhang Zikang, a student of the School of English, won the third place in the "Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press•National Talent Cup" National English Speech Competition. Since its establishment, the school has trained nearly 50,000 graduates for the society.

The school adheres to the concept of international education and continuously expands international education channels. At present, the school has established international cooperation relations with dozens of colleges and universities in 15 countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, and the international cooperation education platform is constantly expanding. The Consulate General of Italy in Chongqing awarded the school the "2016 Golden Pepper Award" in recognition of the school's outstanding contribution to the friendly development of Italy-China relations.

In the past 20 years, the school has made remarkable achievements in various aspects of its work and has received the care and strong support of leaders at all levels, relevant government departments and the society. Huang Mengfu, then Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zhou Ji, Minister of Education, Hu Deping, Deputy Minister of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, Zhao Dacheng, Deputy Minister of Justice, and other leaders have visited the school and guided its work. The school has won dozens of national and provincial (municipal) honorary titles such as "National Advanced Civilian Organization", "Top 100 Chinese Private Education in 2017", "China Private Education Innovation Demonstration Unit in 2019", "Chongqing Safe Campus", and "Chongqing National Security Work Advanced Collective".
