Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences is a full-time undergraduate college sponsored by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government. Its predecessors, Chongqing Normal College and Yuzhou Education College, were founded in 1976 and 1972 respectively; in May 2001, the two schools merged to form Yuxi College; in April 2005, it was renamed Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences.

The school is located in Yongchuan District, Chongqing City, with two campuses, Honghe and Xinghu. The campus covers an area of ​​1,767 acres, the school building area is 730,000 square meters, the library has 2.913 million books (including electronic books), and the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 360 million yuan. The school currently has more than 180 senior professionals and nearly 400 associate senior professionals; more than 370 teachers with doctoral degrees, more than 130 part-time doctoral and master's supervisors; more than 20 foreign teachers (experts), more than 300 external experts; more than 20,000 full-time undergraduate students from more than 20 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country; nearly 50 international students from Russia, Italy, Malaysia and other countries; and cooperates with more than 40 universities in and outside the city to carry out graduate education, and has jointly trained more than 500 graduate students. The school has become one of the six high-level new engineering construction universities (cultivation) in the city. It has established a school-local strategic alliance with Chongqing High-tech Zone, Yongchuan District, Jiulongpo District, Rongchang District, Bishan District, Tongliang District, Dazu District, Neijiang City, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, etc., and has worked with well-known companies such as Baidu, Huawei, Tencent, Chinasoft International, and Neusoft International to jointly build a number of industrial colleges such as Chinasoft Intelligent Engineering College, Neusoft Intelligent Hardware College, and Dawa Virtual Reality Research Institute, and jointly built more than 20 school-enterprise cooperation experimental classes. The school closely combines the industrial development needs of Chongqing, focusing on new materials, big data, artificial intelligence, intelligent manufacturing, chemical pharmaceuticals, modern agriculture, ecological environment and other fields, and focuses on building new research institutes such as the New Materials Technology Research Institute, the International Research Institute of Innovative Targeted Drugs, the Special Plant Research Institute, and the Robotics and Intelligent Equipment Research Institute. The school adheres to the principle of open education and has signed cooperation agreements with more than 30 universities in the United States, Russia, Italy, Malaysia and other countries. It has successively carried out projects such as teacher-student exchanges, cooperative education, cooperative scientific research, and study in China. At present, it focuses on organizing Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the United States, and carries out "2+2" undergraduate and master's joint training projects with Russian Tomsk Polytechnic University, Tomsk State University and other universities. It has signed a doctoral joint training agreement with Kuzbass State Technical University in Kemerovo, Russia, and has carried out teacher-student exchanges and master's joint training projects with the University of Perugia in Italy. It has cooperated with universities such as Taylor's University and Straya University in Malaysia to hold undergraduate to master's programs. The "China-Russia Science and Technology Cooperation and Exchange Platform" has been approved as an international characteristic project in Chongqing. In recent years, more than 10 students of the school have received funding from the China Scholarship Council to study abroad.

The school fully implements the national innovation-driven development strategy. In 2015, the "Chongqing Wenli New Drug Innovation Team" won the first place in the finals of the fourth China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in the biomedical industry on behalf of Chongqing with its "Anti-ED and Pulmonary Hypertension Class I New Drug Development" project with independent intellectual property rights. In 2017, the flexible touch display project won the second place in the first China-Italy Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. In 2021, the sound insulation and heat insulation ultra-fine glass fiber wool project for domestic large aircraft won the gold medal in the final of the 7th China International "Internet +" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, achieving a zero breakthrough in Chongqing's undergraduate colleges and universities winning the national gold medal; and won 1 gold medal in the first national postdoctoral innovation and entrepreneurship competition.
