. Wenzhou Medical University is a provincial general higher education institution in Zhejiang Province. The school can be traced back to Zhejiang Medical College founded in 1912. In August 1958, Zhejiang Medical College moved from Hangzhou to Wenzhou. It was originally named "Zhejiang Second Medical College" and later named "Wenzhou Medical College" after the location of the school. In 2013, it was renamed "Wenzhou Medical University". In 2015, it became a university jointly built by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it became a key university in Zhejiang Province.

The school began to recruit five-year undergraduate students in 1958 and master's students in 1978. It is one of the first batch of master's degree awarding institutions in the country and has the right to award doctoral degrees. There are doctoral programs in clinical medicine, basic medicine, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, and medical technology, as well as a professional doctoral program in clinical medicine. There are 12 first-level master's programs in clinical medicine, nursing, Chinese medicine, biology, biomedical engineering, basic medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, pharmacy, medical technology, stomatology, public health and preventive medicine, and public management. There are 7 professional master's degree authorization points in clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, stomatology, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and applied psychology. There are also first-level postdoctoral research stations in clinical medicine and pharmacy. The school ranks 73rd in the comprehensive ranking of ESI universities nationwide. Eight disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, materials science, chemistry, neuroscience and behavior, and immunology, are among the top 1% in the ESI global ranking, of which the clinical medicine major is among the top 1.21‰ in the ESI global ranking. It has 1 provincial and ministerial co-constructed national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national clinical medicine research center (ophthalmology), 1 National Medical Products Administration ophthalmology medical device and drug clinical research and evaluation key laboratory, 2 Ministry of Education provincial and ministerial co-constructed collaborative innovation centers, 2 national international science and technology cooperation bases, and 29 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. 2 Zhejiang Province "top priority first-level disciplines", 3 Zhejiang Province Class A first-class disciplines, 6 Class B first-class disciplines, 10 Zhejiang Province college key disciplines, and 2 Zhejiang Province key construction disciplines.

The school currently has 30 undergraduate enrollment majors, covering four major disciplines: medicine, science, engineering, and management. There are 14,439 undergraduate and junior college students (full-time, excluding independent colleges-Wenzhou Medical University Renji College), 5,279 graduate students (including 386 doctoral students), and 566 international students in academic education. The school has formed a comprehensive and multi-level talent training system from undergraduates to master's students, doctoral students and postdoctoral students, from full-time to adult education, and education for international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The school actively promotes the internationalization of education and has established good exchanges and cooperation relations with more than 150 universities and educational research institutions in 31 countries (regions), including more than 20 of the world's top 100 universities, and has carried out substantive exchanges and cooperation in student overseas exchanges and joint training, teacher academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation, Sino-foreign cooperative education, and education of international students in China. The Alberta College of Wenzhou Medical University, co-organized with the University of Alberta, a world-renowned university among the top 100, is currently the highest-level Sino-foreign cooperative education program among medical schools in my country. The first overseas clinical medicine education program in my country was co-organized with the Medical University of Lublin in Poland. It was selected as an implementing institution of the "Young Key Teachers Overseas Training Program" of the China Scholarship Council and the first batch of construction units of "Zhejiang Province Internationalized Characteristic Universities".

The school currently has three campuses, with a total area of ​​about 1,900 acres. The library has a collection of about 2.03 million volumes. The school hosts, edits and publishes 5 academic journals and 1 academic newspaper. Among them, the academic journal Eye and Vision has been included in the SCIE academic journals, 3 journals have been selected as "Chinese Science and Technology Core Journals", and the Chinese Journal of Optometry and Visual Science is a series of journals of the Chinese Medical Association. The school has 5 affiliated hospitals, 4 of which are Class A tertiary hospitals, and 29 non-affiliated affiliated hospitals (clinical colleges). The Affiliated Eye and Optometry Hospital, the Affiliated First Hospital, and the Affiliated Second Hospital remain in the top 100 of the Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Value Evaluation Ranking. The Affiliated Eye and Optometry Hospital has been ranked first in the national ophthalmology specialty hospitals for three consecutive years, and ophthalmology has been ranked second in the country.
