Huaqiao University

Huaqiao University is a general higher education institution directly under the Central United Front Work Department, jointly built by the Central United Front Work Department, the Ministry of Education, and the Fujian Provincial People's Government. It is a national Chinese language education base, a national college cultural quality education base, a national language and writing promotion base, a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national demonstration school for the reform of college teacher assessment and evaluation, and a national college Chinese excellent traditional culture inheritance base.

In 1960, with the approval of Premier Zhou Enlai, the school was founded in Quanzhou, Fujian, with Liao Chengzhi as the first president. It was closed in 1970 and resumed in 1978. In 1983, it was identified as a "national key university" by the Party Central Committee. In 1996, it was jointly built by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Fujian Provincial People's Government. In 1997, the former Jimei Overseas Chinese Students Tutorial School was merged into the Huaqiao University Chinese Language and Literature College. The Xiamen campus was put into use in 2006. In 2003, it was rated as excellent in the first batch of undergraduate teaching work level evaluation by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it was selected as a "double first-class" construction university in Fujian Province.

The school established a board of directors in 1980, and Zhuang Xiquan, Hu Ping, Huang Changxi, Jia Qinglin, Chen Mingyi, Song Defu, and Wang Gang successively served as chairmen. The current chairman is Cai Dafeng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League. The honorary chairman is Edmund Ho, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region.

There are more than 2,800 faculty and staff. Among the more than 1,700 full-time teachers, 56% have senior professional titles, 67% have doctoral degrees, 38% have overseas study experience, and 66% are young and middle-aged teachers under the age of 45. There are more than 100 high-level talents such as dual-appointed academicians and national leading talents, as well as many high-level teams such as the "Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of National Universities" of the Ministry of Education and the innovation team in key areas of the "Innovation Talent Promotion Plan" of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The school adheres to the principle of cultivating people with moral integrity and vigorously cultivates high-quality talents with innovative spirit, practical ability, international vision and social responsibility. A total of more than 200,000 talents of various types have been trained, of which more than 60,000 are distributed in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas, becoming friendly envoys to promote exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries. There are 27,101 full-time undergraduate students and 5,486 graduate students. There are 7,070 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and more than 90 countries. It is one of the universities with the most overseas students in the country. There are 26 colleges and 90 departments (departments, centers). There are 18 national first-class undergraduate majors, 26 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, and 17 majors have passed international and domestic professional certification. There are 18 national first-class undergraduate courses and 120 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. There are more than 80 teaching and research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the Provincial and Ministerial Cooperative Innovation Center, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, the Virtual Simulation Experiment Center, and the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.

The school strengthens discipline construction, forming a discipline layout that integrates liberal arts and science, combines science and engineering, and combines engineering and management, covering 11 disciplines. There are 9 first-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level master programs, 22 professional degree master programs, and 5 postdoctoral mobile stations. It has 41 national and provincial and ministerial key disciplines, and 17 peak and plateau disciplines in Fujian Province. Engineering is in the top 5‰ of the ESI world ranking, and chemistry, materials science, and computer science are in the top 1% of ESI.

The school attaches importance to academic research and continuously enhances its scientific and technological innovation and cultural innovation capabilities. The number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and the Social Science Foundation each year ranks among the top universities in Fujian Province. Scientific research results have won the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award for Colleges and Universities, and relevant academic papers have been published in journals such as Nature and Chinese Social Sciences. It has been in the top 100 of the Nature Index annual list for four consecutive years. Two professors have been selected into the list of "highly cited scientists" in the world.

The school actively carries out social services, promotes innovation in the integration of industry and education, and contributes to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country. Rooted in the land of Fujian, it helps Fujian Province to promote high-quality development and surpass in all aspects. It presided over the commissioned legislative projects such as the "Regulations on Promoting Ecological Civilization Construction in Fujian Province", participated in the relevant heritage application work in Xiamen and Quanzhou, and worked with local governments to promote the construction of the "Belt and Road" Qiaoze Garden in Quanzhou, and created the "Huada Lecture Hall" and "Jimei Lecture Hall" high-end learning platforms. It has established school-local cooperation relations with Chongqing and 8 prefecture-level cities in Fujian Province, and helped the Qianxinan Experimental Zone in Guizhou and Jishishan County in Gansu to overcome poverty.

The school vigorously promotes international exchanges and cooperation, and has signed cooperation agreements with more than 250 universities, research institutions and government departments in 42 countries and regions on five continents. As a Chinese government scholarship institution for international students in China, it has established 130 service or enrollment agencies around the world.

The school adheres to the school-running policy of "facing overseas, facing Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan", upholds the school-running purpose of "serving overseas Chinese and spreading Chinese culture", implements the school-running philosophy of "combining China and foreign countries, and cultivating talents", and strives to serve the country's overseas Chinese affairs and public diplomacy work, and promote the construction of the "Belt and Road". The "Blue Book of Overseas Chinese" has been published for eleven consecutive years. The Maritime Silk Road Research Institute has been selected as the most influential university think tank of the "Belt and Road" by the National Development and Reform Commission for three consecutive years, and has been selected as a "Belt and Road" research feature think tank by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Evaluation. The Thailand Research Center was selected as the National and Regional Research Center of the Ministry of Education, the Malaysia Research Center was selected as the National and Regional Research Center of the "Belt and Road" of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the Overseas Chinese Research Institute and the Urban Construction and Economic Development Research Institute were selected as key think tanks in Fujian Province. To promote people-to-people exchanges, the "Foreign Government Officials Chinese Learning Class" has been held for 16 consecutive years, and a large number of outstanding talents dedicated to promoting friendship between China and foreign countries have been trained for countries along the "Belt and Road". The school vigorously promotes Chinese education, trains teachers, compiles textbooks, and conducts Chinese traditional cultural experience for more than 570 Chinese schools in 55 countries around the world, and helps the standardization, formalization, and professionalization of Chinese education in the country.

The student men's basketball team won the Chinese University Basketball League championship for the ninth time, and won the men's basketball championship of the World University Three-on-Three Basketball League Finals for the first time on behalf of China.

The school has campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen, with a total area of ​​2.1478 million square meters, a building area of ​​1.1804 million square meters, and 5.02 million books and materials of various types.
