Fujian Institute of Technology is located in Fuzhou, a historical and cultural city known as the gateway to the "Maritime Silk Road". The school originated from the "Cangxia Jingshe" founded by the famous local celebrities Chen Bi, Sun Baojin, Li Jun and the famous Fujian gentry Lin Shu and the last imperial tutor Chen Baochen in the late Qing Dynasty in 1896, which pioneered the trend of modern new-style education in Fuzhou. In 1907, it began to hold engineering education and opened two departments, railway and telegraph. Before liberation, it was the prestigious "Fujian Higher Engineering". After 1953, it was separated into Fujian Mechanical and Electrical School and Fujian Construction Engineering College. The two schools changed their names several times with the changing times. In 1961, they were renamed Fujian Mechanical and Electrical College and Fujian Construction Engineering College respectively. They are known as the "Huangpu Military Academy of the Construction Industry" and "Cradle of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers" in Fujian. In 2000, Fujian Advanced Industrial College and Fujian Zhonghua Vocational University merged to form Fujian Vocational and Technical College. In 2002, Fujian Construction College and Fujian Vocational and Technical College merged and upgraded to Fujian Engineering College. In 2013, it was approved as a master's degree authorization unit and added as a key construction university in Fujian Province. In 2018, it was selected as a model applied undergraduate college in Fujian Province, a doctoral degree awarding and cultivation unit in Fujian Province, and a first-class discipline construction university in Fujian Province.

Over the past 120 years, the school has adhered to the school motto of "truth, sincerity, diligence and courage", carried forward the traditional advantages of "big electromechanical and big civil engineering", and oriented to the emerging field of "big ocean". It has developed into an application-oriented undergraduate university with engineering as the main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, management, literature, science, economics, law, and art, and has successively provided more than 200,000 talents of all levels and types to the society.

There are campuses such as Qishan, Eel Creek, Pudong, and Tongpan, covering an area of ​​2,074.8 acres, with a building area of ​​703,500 square meters, teaching and scientific research equipment worth 463.2766 million yuan, 2.2651 million paper books in the library, 1.9834 million electronic books, 21,336 full-time students, including 1,475 master's students (including foreign students), 17 colleges (departments), 71 undergraduate majors, covering disciplines such as engineering, management, literature, science, economics, law, and art. There are 1,260 full-time teachers, including 625 with senior professional titles, nearly 100 national and provincial high-level talents, 1 person was selected for the 7th China Association for Science and Technology "Young Talent Support Project" (2021~2023), and 19 provincial and above teaching and scientific and technological innovation teams. More than 400 well-known experts at home and abroad have been appointed as honorary professors, distinguished professors, part-time professors and visiting professors. There are 6 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and 9 master's professional degree authorization points. It has 2 provincial plateau disciplines, 4 provincial applied disciplines, and 2 provincial applied cultivation disciplines. The engineering discipline entered the top 1% of the ESI discipline ranking in March 2022. Two disciplines, civil engineering and materials science and engineering, entered the top 50% of the "2021 Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking" in the country, and the computer science and engineering discipline entered the 2021 "Soft Science World Class Discipline Ranking" 301~400, ranking 73rd in the 2021 China Discipline Ranking.

The university adheres to the "engineering-oriented, regional, and application-oriented" school-running orientation, closely follows the development of Fujian's leading industries and strategic emerging industries, and has formed 8 major professional clusters focusing on service equipment manufacturing, electronic information, construction, modern transportation, ecological and environmental protection industries, and has become the first batch of pilot universities for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education. There are 10 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 3 national characteristic majors, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, and 19 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites. There are 5 national first-class courses, 1 national course ideological and political demonstration course, 2 national quality resource sharing courses, and 83 provincial first-class courses. There are 6 national teaching practice platforms, among which the "Electronic Information and Electrical Technology Experimental Center" was selected as a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and the "Civil Engineering Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center" was selected as a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center. There is 1 provincial course ideological and political demonstration center, 37 provincial teaching achievement awards, and 1 second prize for national higher education teaching achievements. 12 majors including architecture, civil engineering, computer science and technology have passed the professional evaluation and certification of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development or the professional certification of engineering education of the Ministry of Education. The number of professional certification and evaluation passes ranks second among universities in the province and among the top universities in the country.

The school actively focuses on the needs of regional industrial development and technological innovation, and has achieved remarkable results in scientific and technological innovation. In 2013, it won one second prize of the National Science and Technology Invention Award. There are 32 provincial (ministerial) scientific research and innovation platforms. Since 2016, it has undertaken 95 national scientific research projects and 574 provincial and ministerial projects; presided over 83 National Natural Science Foundation projects and humanities and social sciences foundation projects, 9 national key science and technology research and development plan projects, and 55 major (key) projects of Fujian Province. Won 54 provincial (ministerial) science and technology awards and social science achievement awards, including 44 provincial (ministerial) science and technology awards (including 10 first prizes) and 10 provincial (ministerial) social science outstanding achievement awards; obtained 485 authorized invention patents, and many projects were selected as provincial and municipal "unveiling the list and leading the team" projects.

The school attaches great importance to the cultivation and education of students' quality, and the comprehensive quality of college students is constantly improving. In the past five years, students have won 262 international honors, 2,110 national honors, and 1,937 provincial honors in innovation, entrepreneurship, and subject competitions at or above the provincial level, such as the silver medal in the Asian finals of the ACM International College Student Programming Contest, the first prize in the China Formula Student Car Competition, the silver medal in the China "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the bronze medal in the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. The school implements the "Undergraduate Patent Promotion Plan" and subsidizes students to obtain 85 patent authorizations as the first inventor. Implement the college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program project and obtain 305 national projects. The results of innovation and entrepreneurship education won the second prize of the Fujian Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award in 2018. It was rated as "National Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Characteristic Typical Experience University", ranked among the "Top 100 National Ordinary Undergraduate University League Entrepreneurship Education Work Index", and was shortlisted as a demonstration college for the construction of innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity education in Fujian Province, and was shortlisted as a demonstration construction base for the practice of production and innovation integration education in Fujian Province. In terms of art and sports, the school won the "Excellent Organization Award" of the 6th National College Students' Art Exhibition and Performance, and won the "President Cup" of the 4th National College Students' Art Exhibition and Performance. The original art masterpieces "Light", "Love on the Other Side of the Sea" and "Cultural Context" won awards in the National College Students' Art Exhibition and Performance and the Cross-Strait College Students' Dance Competition; the school men's basketball team participated in the CUBA China College Students Basketball League (Sunshine Group) and won the championship and runner-up. It is the only team that has been shortlisted for the top eight in the country for five consecutive sessions. The school insists on open education and has established friendly cooperative relations with universities in nearly 20 countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Greece, etc. Actively serve the country's "Belt and Road" initiative, establish in-depth cooperation with universities in Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Thailand and other countries, and have made great progress in joint training of students, academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation of teachers, introduction of overseas intelligence, and education of international students in China. The school began to recruit international students in 2012. It is qualified to recruit international students with Chinese government scholarships and Fujian provincial government scholarships. Currently, nearly 100 international students from more than 20 countries related to the "Belt and Road" come to the school to study undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Relying on the "Excellent Undergraduate International Exchange Program" of the China Scholarship Council, the "China-US Talent Training Program" 121 Dual Degree Program, the "Quality Engineering" exchange program of German universities, the exchange student program of the University of Malaya, and the exchange student program of the Czech University of Technology Ostrava, more than 100 outstanding college students are selected to study abroad or study long-term or short-term at famous foreign universities.

The school actively serves Fujian to explore a new path for the integration and development of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, jointly trains students with many universities in Taiwan, and introduces nearly 70 outstanding Taiwanese teachers. In 2019, it was approved to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
