Xiamen Medical College

Xiamen Medical College is a full-time public undergraduate college. It is one of the three medical undergraduate colleges in Fujian Province and the only medical undergraduate college in southwest Fujian. The origin of the school can be traced back to the medical school founded in Gulangyu in 1898. The school inherits the school motto of "morality and skill", condenses and promotes the school spirit of "sunshine, atmosphere, kindness and gratitude" and the style of study of "loyalty, unity, hard work and innovation", and aims to cultivate "four-devotion" medical talents who are "loyal to the country, filial to parents, responsible to the unit, and dedicated to patients". Based in Xiamen, facing Fujian, radiating across the country, it is committed to providing high-quality applied medical and health talents for the medical and health industry, biomedicine and health service industry. The employment rate of graduates has remained above 99% for many years.

The school is located in Xiamen Special Economic Zone, a modern international city known as "a city of high-quality innovation and entrepreneurship, and a city of high-value ecological gardens". It is surrounded by mountains and the sea, with a beautiful environment, advanced teaching and scientific research equipment, complete public services and management systems, and remarkable achievements in the construction of ecological campuses, smart campuses and civilized campuses. The campus covers a total area of ​​885 acres, of which the existing school headquarters covers an area of ​​520 acres and the second phase is planned to use 365 acres. The current total construction area is 220,000 square meters, the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is nearly 350 million yuan, the library has nearly 659,000 books, and 564,000 electronic books. The number of teachers and students in the school has reached 10,000.

The construction of disciplines and majors has reached a certain scale. There are 8 teaching institutions including the Department of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Stomatology, the Department of Nursing, the Department of Pharmacy, the Department of Public Health and Medical Technology, the Department of Basic Medicine, the Department of Public Courses, and the School of Marxism. There are 4 teaching auxiliary institutions including the Department of Continuing Education, the Library, the Information Center, and the Laboratory and Equipment Management Center. There are 15 undergraduate majors, including clinical medicine, stomatology, nursing, pharmacy, Chinese medicine, biopharmaceuticals, psychiatry, rehabilitation therapy, marine pharmacy, medical laboratory technology, anesthesiology, preventive medicine, stomatology technology, midwifery and cosmetic technology and engineering. At the same time, there are 10 specialized majors, including acupuncture and massage, rehabilitation therapy technology, stomatology technology, nursing, midwifery, pharmaceutical biotechnology, medical cosmetology technology, health management, health information management, and optometry technology. A complete discipline and professional system of "medicine, nursing, medicine, and technology" has been formed, and enrollment is open to the whole country. Starting from 2021, the school will jointly recruit and train master's students with Fujian Medical University and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The teaching staff is growing. There are 2,787 teaching and medical staff (including 2 directly affiliated hospitals). Among them, there are 423 full-time teachers, 122 of whom have doctoral degrees and 244 have master's degrees, accounting for 86.5% of the total number of full-time teachers; 81 have senior professional titles and 145 have associate senior professional titles, accounting for 53.4% ​​of the total number of full-time teachers; there are more than 1,400 external teachers. The school has invited the famous respiratory disease expert and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhong Nanshan, as the honorary director of the Institute of Respiratory Diseases and the honorary dean of the Second Affiliated Hospital. The education and teaching reform has been steadily promoted. A number of education and teaching honors and achievements have been won. The national level includes 2 majors supported by the central government, 3 training bases, 1 national demonstration site for health services and 1 national demonstration site for elderly care services, 1 teaching achievement award from the National Industry Vocational Education and Teaching Steering Committee, and 6 national planning textbooks. The provincial level includes 4 teaching achievement awards, 2 undergraduate teaching teams, 2 first-class professional construction sites, 12 provincial project construction majors, 9 experimental teaching centers, 34 first-class courses, and 65 education and teaching reform projects. There are 5 municipal key majors. Since 2018, the school has won two second prizes in the fourth and fifth national undergraduate college young teacher teaching competitions; won the third prize in the 2021 National Undergraduate College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition; won two special prizes, one first prize, two second prizes, and one third prize in the fourth and fifth undergraduate college young teacher teaching competitions in Fujian Province; won one first prize, two second prizes, and three special prizes in the 2021 Fujian Province First Undergraduate College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition, becoming the only school in the province to win three special prizes; the school won the "Best Organization Award" three times.

The scientific research and innovation capabilities have been comprehensively improved. There is currently one national CMA-certified analysis and testing center, six provincial scientific research platforms, and three municipal scientific research platforms. Since 2016, the school has undertaken 654 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation and 76 horizontal projects; won the Fujian Science and Technology Progress Award, the Natural Science Outstanding Academic Paper Award and the Xiamen Medical Innovation Award; authorized 194 intellectual property rights such as national invention patents; and published 1,856 papers in natural and social sciences and social sciences.

The coordinated development of medicine and education has been further promoted. There are 2 national physician qualification examination (clinical category and oral category) practical skills examination bases, 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 3 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 41 teaching hospitals and 91 off-campus training bases.

The quality of talent training has steadily improved. Among the undergraduate graduates of 2022, the application rate for the postgraduate examination is nearly 50%, the pass rate is 51.65%, and the admission rate is 31.39%, which is 7 percentage points higher than the national admission rate. There are 45 admitted institutions, including 18 double first-class institutions such as Peking University, West China Medical School of Sichuan University, Xiangya School of Medicine of Central South University, and China Pharmaceutical University. Among the undergraduate graduates of 2021, the application rate for postgraduate examinations is nearly 50%, the pass rate is 44.3%, and the admission rate is 30%. Students actively participate in various competitions across the country, the province and the Taiwan Straits. In the past three years, they have won 34 first prizes, 44 second prizes, 58 third prizes, and 8 excellent prizes at the national level; 19 first prizes, 32 second prizes, 47 third prizes, and 10 excellent prizes at the provincial level. The first and second clinical medicine students of the school participated in the national clinical medicine professional (undergraduate) level test, among which the theoretical examination pass rate exceeded 90%, which was 20-30 percentage points higher than the national average pass rate, and the clinical practice skills examination pass rate reached 100%.

Foreign exchanges and cooperation have gradually expanded. Cooperation agreements have been signed with Daejeon University, Daegu University of Korean Medicine, Daegu Catholic University, Gimcheon University, Yangming University, Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology, and Fuying University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, and extensive cooperation in the exchange of scholars, student exchanges, scientific research, etc.

At present, Xiamen Medical College is under the leadership of the Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Government, Xiamen Municipal Party Committee and Government, and under the leadership of the school party committee, adhering to the Party construction leadership, striving to run a school with a scale of more than 10,000 people in the next 3 to 5 years, and through high-level grafting, achieve overtaking and leapfrogging development, embark on a multi-disciplinary characteristic development path of "medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and technology", and build a first-class high-level applied medical undergraduate university in the region.
