In 1909, the predecessor of Henan Polytechnic University (abbreviated as "Henan Polytechnic"; English: Henan Polytechnic University, English abbreviation "HPU"), Jiaozuo Road and Mining School, was established in Jiaozuo, on the bank of the Yellow River and on the south of Taihang Mountain, becoming the first mining university in my country and the earliest university established in Henan Province. The school has gone through important historical periods such as Fuzhou University of Mining, Private Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, National Northwest Institute of Technology, National Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, Jiaozuo Institute of Mining (JMI) and Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (JIT). In 2004, it was renamed Henan Polytechnic University. It is a key university in Henan Province jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by local governments. It is a university jointly built by the Henan Provincial People's Government and the former State Administration of Work Safety. It has been selected as a university in the national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China".

In the first half of the 20th century, many scholars such as the famous educator Cai Yuanpei, the industrial and mining master Sun Yueqi, the geologist Weng Wenhao, and Zhang Zhonglu, Zhang Qinglian, and Zhang Bosheng successively taught at the school, leading the school to bear the historical responsibility of cultivating senior specialized technical talents in industry and mining, and made special contributions to the revitalization of national industry, national economic development, and social civilization progress. It has now developed into a distinctive high-level university with the right to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees. The school currently has three campuses: South Campus (No. 2001, Century Road, Jiaozuo City), North Campus (No. 142, Jiefang Middle Road, Jiaozuo City), and West Campus (No. 55, Jianshe West Road, Jiaozuo City), covering an area of ​​more than 4,100 acres and a building area of ​​more than 1.4 million square meters. It has 22 teaching colleges, the International Education College, and the Continuing Education College (Safety Technology Training Center); 81 undergraduate majors, covering nine disciplines of engineering, science, management, economics, law, literature, education, art, and medicine. It has established friendly cooperative relations with nearly 80 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, and has cooperated with well-known foreign universities to organize 4 undergraduate education projects of the Ministry of Education's Sino-foreign cooperative education, and has been selected into the Ministry of Education's "Student Exchange Program for High-level Universities in China and Foreign Countries"; it has built 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers such as electrical and electronic engineering and engineering training centers, and 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers (including projects). The total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 839 million yuan, the total value of fixed assets is 2.455 billion yuan, and there are more than 3.46 million paper books, realizing the modernization of teaching and scientific research conditions. It has built a provincial university science and technology park, a "mass innovation space", a demonstration base for college students' innovation and entrepreneurship practice, and a national college practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base; it has three libraries and two affiliated hospitals; the 10G campus network has achieved full wireless coverage, and has built cloud platforms, information portals, one-stop service halls, high-performance computing platforms and other smart campus infrastructure. It has won the title of "Advanced Unit of Higher Education Informatization" by the Ministry of Education and was selected as one of the first batch of "Smart Campus Construction Pilot Universities" in Henan Province; it has built a large modern gymnasium with a total area of ​​140,000 square meters. It has hosted large-scale sports events such as CUBA and CUFA many times and is named "National Mass Sports Advanced Unit" by the State General Administration of Sports; the student apartments and canteens have been rated as "Model Student Apartments" and "Model Student Canteens" in Henan Province.
