Xuchang University is located in Xuchang City, Henan Province, the former capital of the Han and Wei dynasties. Xuchang is located in the "Central Plains". Xuchang University is a provincial full-time general undergraduate college. The predecessor of the school was the Joint Normal School of the Fifth Administrative District of Henan Province, which was founded in August 1942. In July 1946, Henan Provincial Xuchang Normal School was established, and the Five Districts Joint Normal School was merged into Xuchang Normal School. After the founding of New China, the school developed healthily. In 1959, it was approved by the State Council as a normal college. In 1963, it was adjusted to a secondary normal school due to national economic difficulties. In 1978, it was the first batch of normal colleges to be reopened. In March 2002, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be upgraded to an undergraduate college. In 2012, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate college teaching work qualification evaluation, and in 2020, it passed the undergraduate teaching work review and evaluation. The school is one of the first batch of local undergraduate colleges in Henan Province to pilot transformation and development, a demonstration applied technology type undergraduate college, a key project construction unit for master's degree awarding in Henan Province, and a national "13th Five-Year Plan" industry-education integration development project construction project college.
