Pingdingshan University is a comprehensive full-time undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education and sponsored by the People's Government of Henan Province. The school is located on the banks of Baigui Lake and Guoding Mountain in Xinhua District, Pingdingshan City. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers, has a beautiful natural environment and profound cultural heritage.

The predecessor of Pingdingshan University was Pingdingshan Normal School, which was founded in October 1959. In August 1977, it was approved to set up a junior college class in Pingdingshan Normal School. In 1984, it was changed to Pingdingshan Normal College. In May 2004, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be upgraded to an undergraduate college. In November 2012, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The school actively implements the deployment requirements of the state and Henan Province on the classified development of higher education, firmly positions itself as an application-oriented school, and deeply promotes transformation and development. It is a master's degree granting project construction unit, a pilot university for transformation and development in Henan Province, and a demonstration undergraduate college of applied technology in Henan Province. Since its establishment, Pingdingshan College has adhered to the school motto of "virtue, erudition, truth-seeking, and innovation". The school currently has two campuses, Hubin and Chongwen, covering an area of ​​1.546 million square meters and a building area of ​​more than 650,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 260 million yuan, and the library has 3.025 million books. There are 20,706 full-time students and nearly 13,000 adult education students of all kinds; there are more than 1,600 faculty and staff, including more than 1,100 full-time teachers, more than 900 of whom have doctoral and master's degrees (degrees), and more than 400 teachers with senior professional titles. The school insists on being based on the local service industry, and has gradually formed a discipline and professional layout with engineering and other applied disciplines as the main and multi-disciplinary coordinated development. The school has 18 teaching units and 54 undergraduate majors, covering nine disciplines including engineering, management, science, literature, medicine, education, economics, law, and art. The school focuses on the construction of six major disciplines and professional groups, namely electrical information, chemical environment, economic management, cultural creativity, teacher education, and medical and health. It has been approved for 1 national first-class professional construction site, 14 provincial first-class professional construction sites, 1 national first-class course, 31 provincial first-class courses, and more than 100 provincial and above undergraduate teaching quality engineering projects.

The school has a number of strong scientific research institutions and technology development bases. The school has carried out collaborative innovation around the needs of industries and enterprises and has achieved remarkable results. The school has jointly carried out the research and development of high-voltage intelligent electrical appliances with Pinggao Group and others, and a large number of independent intellectual property rights have emerged, which have been successfully applied in domestic and foreign enterprises and major projects such as PetroChina Shaanxi Changqing Oilfield, Pinggao Group, Eaton Electric, Anhui Power East Transmission, etc. The IST-701 wireless discharge positioning system developed by the company has replaced imported products. The multi-channel detection system for substation grounding grid developed by non-destructive testing technology has increased the efficiency of substation grounding grid corrosion detection by more than 10 times, and achieved accurate positioning of grounding grid corrosion branches without excavation, making the substation grounding grid corrosion detection technology reach the international leading level. The company has co-built the Key Laboratory of Ecological Restoration in Low Mountain and Hilly Areas with the Chinese Academy of Forestry and the Henan Provincial Forestry Department, established an academician workstation and a postdoctoral research and development base for ecological restoration in low mountain and hilly areas, built a public welfare project test base for the forestry industry of the State Forestry Administration, joined the China Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network funded by the Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and completed a series of major national, provincial and municipal projects, contributing to the ecological environment protection, rational resource utilization and sustainable development in Henan Province. The Funiushan Cultural Circle Research Center brings together experts and scholars from home and abroad to conduct in-depth research on the excellent traditional culture of the region, publish a series of works, shoot high-level film and television works, and cooperate with local mainstream media to launch TV programs, etc., which has played an important role in the excavation, inheritance and innovation of regional culture. The project of reproducing the flower-glazed porcelain of the Tang Dynasty undertaken by the Ceramics Research Institute restored the lost thousand-year-old flower-glazed porcelain production technology of the Tang Dynasty, filling the domestic gap. On this basis, Lushan County established the Lushan Flower Porcelain Industrial Park. The "13th Five-Year Plan" national key book "20th Century Chinese Ceramic Sculpture Collection" was published. The complete collection consists of 12 volumes, which include more than 4,000 works from representative kilns in various porcelain areas in mainland China and Taiwan in the 20th century. It has conducted a relatively systematic and comprehensive study and analysis of the development of Chinese ceramic sculpture in the 20th century, filling a gap in the research field of Chinese ceramic sculpture. The school's dragon and lion dance and soft ball two featured projects have won gold medals in national competitions many times. The dragon and lion team has been invited to South Korea and Italy for cultural exchanges, and has received attention and reports from mainstream media at home and abroad. The school's Yayue Orchestra reproduced the ancient Yingguo court ritual and music culture at the 5th Beijing Traditional Music Festival, which attracted the attention of peers at home and abroad.

The school adheres to the principle of open education and has established cooperative relations with universities in more than 30 countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain. It has cooperated with the University of Malaga in Spain to offer an undergraduate program in Internet of Things Engineering, and with Kyungwoon University in South Korea to offer an undergraduate program in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering. It has been approved as the first Sino-foreign cooperative school in Henan Province with Spanish as its specialty, the "Pingdingshan College Spanish Center". It has carried out industry-education integration and school-enterprise cooperation with governments, enterprises, and industry associations such as the Pingdingshan Municipal Government, Pingmei Shenma Group, Pinggao Group, Dahe.com, and the China Building Sanitary Ceramics Association. It has established 8 industrial colleges and built the country's first Kunpeng Industrial College. The Nylon New Materials College has been approved as the first batch of provincial-level key modern industrial colleges in Henan Province.
