Guangdong Open University

Guangdong Open University is a new type of higher education institution organized by the People's Government of Guangdong Province and directly under the Provincial Department of Education. It is supported by modern information technology and provides distance open education for all members of society and has the right to confer bachelor's degrees. The school serves the construction of a learning society in Guangdong. It insists on being oriented to the grassroots, the industry, the community, and the countryside, providing learners with diversified and multi-level academic education and non-academic education, promoting the coordinated education of high-level undergraduates and three-two-stage junior colleges and undergraduates, and the integrated talent training of higher vocational colleges and open education undergraduates. It has jointly built a postgraduate training base with ordinary universities, and has a Guangdong Provincial Doctoral Work Station, which has established a channel for upgrading the academic qualifications of junior colleges, undergraduates, masters, and doctors.

The predecessor of Guangdong Open University was Guangdong Radio and Television University, which was established in November 1978. It implemented a "one team, two brands" management system with Guangdong Polytechnic College, sharing resources and complementing each other's strengths. In December 2012, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Guangdong Radio and Television University to Guangdong Open University. The school has achieved the overall transformation of the city and county TV universities in the province. At present, there are 19 municipal open universities, 69 county open universities, and more than 20 industry colleges (branches). 5 municipal open universities and 26 county open universities have established community colleges, and 16 municipal open universities and 32 county open universities have established senior citizen university branches, forming a school-running system covering urban and rural areas and some industries in the province. It is a university close to the people. Among the 44 provincial TV university systems in the country, Guangdong Open University ranks among the top three in the country in terms of comprehensive strength, the number of registered students is the largest in the country, the teaching staff is the second in the country, and the assets and equipment are the third in the country. The school currently has about 482,700 students at all levels and types, including 458,700 in open education and adult education, 13,300 in higher vocational education, and 10,700 in secondary vocational education.

Guangdong Open University has always adhered to the concept of lifelong education as its guide, and has taken serving the whole nation, lifelong learning, and promoting the all-round development of people as its purpose, realizing the openness of educational concepts, educational objects, training models, learning resources, teaching staff, and methods and means, promoting the deep integration of information technology and education and teaching, and is committed to meeting the diverse learning needs of learners, cultivating applied professionals with independent learning ability and lifelong development ability, and adapting to the needs of Guangdong's economic and social development. The school has a strong faculty, a well-structured and high-level faculty, with 37 senior professional titles, 127 associate senior professional titles, 65 doctors, 443 masters, and 373 "double-qualified" teachers. There are currently 5 national outstanding teachers and national model teachers, 2 Guangdong college teaching masters, 1 "Guangdong Special Support Plan" teaching master, 20 Guangdong outstanding teachers, 18 Guangdong college "Thousand, Hundred, Ten" project school-level training targets, 14 teachers have been appointed as members of the Guangdong Higher Vocational Education Professional Teaching Guidance Committee, and 12 teachers have been selected for the Guangdong College Outstanding Young Teachers Training Program and the Guangdong Higher Vocational College High-level Skilled Talent Attraction Program. At the same time, the school has also hired a group of domestic and foreign experts and scholars, disciplines and curriculum construction leaders to guide and promote disciplines and curriculum construction.

Guangdong Open University currently has the School of Artificial Intelligence, the School of Engineering Technology (School of Internet of Things), the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (School of Standardization), the School of Robotics, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Law and Administration (School of Health Industry), the School of Cultural Communication and Design, the School of Applied Foreign Languages, the School of Rural Revitalization, the School of Marxism and the Department of Public Teaching. It offers 18 undergraduate majors such as standardization engineering, cultural industry management, law, information security, civil engineering and computer science and technology, and 27 junior college majors such as e-commerce, accounting, and construction engineering management.

Guangdong Open University is also a branch of the National Open University. It currently offers 15 undergraduate majors and 25 junior college majors in open education. Over the past 43 years, the school has trained a total of about 1.5273 million graduates of various types, making important contributions to increasing the gross enrollment rate of higher education in Guangdong, popularizing higher education, and improving the quality of the whole people.

Guangdong Open University also hosts Guangdong University for the Aged, with the purpose of "increasing knowledge, enriching life, cultivating sentiment, improving quality, promoting health, and serving the society", and the goal of cultivating "healthy elderly, happy elderly, and fashionable elderly". It provides academic and non-academic education for the elderly and elderly care service practitioners. At present, Guangdong University for the Aged has opened more than 70 training courses in music and instrumental music, dance and body shape, fine arts and calligraphy, sports and health care, and humanities and self-cultivation.
