South China Agricultural University

Founded in 1909, South China Agricultural University is a teaching and research university with advantages in agricultural science and life science, specializing in tropical and subtropical regional agricultural research, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as agriculture, engineering, liberal arts, science, economics, management, and law.

South China Agricultural University is a national "double first-class" university. The campus is located in Guangzhou, which is known as the "Flower City". The total land area is 8,261 acres, including 4,457 acres of Tianhe Wushan campus and 3,804 acres of Zengcheng teaching and research base. The total building area of ​​the school is 1.4 million square meters. The natural scenery and cultural landscape complement each other, forming a beautiful environment of "five lakes and four seas with a forest".

The history of the school can be traced back to the Guangdong Provincial Agricultural Experiment Station and the attached Agricultural Training Institute, which was founded in 1909. In 1952, during the adjustment of colleges and departments in colleges across the country, the Agricultural College of Sun Yat-sen University, the Agricultural College of Lingnan University and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and part of the Pest Control Department of the Agricultural College of Guangxi University were merged to form the South China Agricultural College, which was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture; Chairman Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of the school. In 1984, it was renamed South China Agricultural University. In 2000, the state deepened the reform of the management system of colleges and universities, and the school was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. The current party secretary of the school is Wang Binwei and the president is Liu Yahong.

Today, South China Agricultural University has developed into a comprehensive university with advantages in agricultural science and life science, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as agriculture, industry, literature, science, economics, management, law, and art. The school has a complete range of disciplines, with 101 undergraduate majors, 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 1 doctoral professional degree category, 30 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 19 master's professional degree categories. Crop science was selected as a national "first-class construction discipline" and 10 key construction disciplines of Guangdong Province's high-level university construction plan were approved. Botany and zoology entered the top 1‰ of the ESI global ranking; 10 disciplines including botany and zoology, chemistry, agricultural science, materials science, microbiology, biology and biochemistry, environmental science and ecology, engineering, immunology, pharmacology and toxicology entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking.

The school has a strong faculty. There are 3,387 faculty members, including 2,363 full-time teachers (487 senior and 868 associate senior); 3 academicians, 55 national talents, 107 provincial talents; 3 national teaching masters, 4 national teaching teams; 320 doctoral supervisors, 895 academic master supervisors, and 1,314 professional master supervisors.

The school adheres to educating people for the Party and cultivating talents for the country, and strives to enhance students' sense of historical mission, social responsibility, innovative spirit and practical ability, and strives to cultivate socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor. The school has 25 colleges (departments), with more than 48,000 students (including international students), including more than 38,000 undergraduates and more than 10,000 postgraduates. There are 22 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 12 national characteristic majors, 2 professional comprehensive reform pilots, 8 pilot majors for the reform of the excellent agricultural and forestry talent education and training plan, 21 national first-class undergraduate courses and many national quality courses, quality video open courses, quality resource sharing courses, and quality online open courses. In the past two sessions, it has won 5 national teaching achievement awards (including 1 first prize and 3 second prizes). The school has been identified by the Ministry of Education as a "national graduate employment typical experience university" and a "three-dimensional education" comprehensive reform pilot university.

The school has strong scientific research and innovation capabilities. There are 9 national scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory for the Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agricultural Biological Resources, the National Plant Space Breeding Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Pig Seed Industry Engineering Technology Research Center, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Control Preparations, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Livestock and Poultry Breeding (Guangdong), the National Veterinary Microbial Resistance Risk Assessment Laboratory, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Precision Processing and Safety Control Technology of Livestock and Poultry Products (Guangdong), the National International Joint Research Center for Precision Agriculture Aerial Application Technology, and the National African Swine Fever Regional Laboratory (Guangzhou), 104 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, and 3 Guangdong Province University Characteristic New Think Tanks. Adhere to the "four orientations" and serve to achieve high-level scientific and technological self-reliance. In the past five years, it has won 12 national science and technology awards, achieving full coverage of the three national science and technology progress, technological inventions and natural science awards. The school attaches great importance to industry-university-research cooperation and social services, and has established the Rural Revitalization Research Institute and the New Rural Development Research Institute.

The school actively builds a new pattern of opening up to the outside world. At present, it has signed 222 cooperation agreements or memoranda with 140 universities and research institutions in 41 countries and regions, and established the Guangzhou Dublin International School of Life Sciences and Technology. Approved 2 national higher education discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases (referred to as the "111 Plan"); joined the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance, and academic exchanges with universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are increasingly strengthened. Take the lead in initiating the establishment of the China-Latin America Agricultural Education, Science and Technology Innovation Alliance.
