Founded in 1933, Guangdong Light Industry Vocational and Technical College is the only national model higher vocational college in the province, a construction unit of high-level vocational schools and high-level professional groups with Chinese characteristics ("double high plan"), and currently has more than 20,000 full-time students. The school was formerly the "Guangdong Provincial No. 1 Vocational School" and has a 88-year history of vocational education. It has offered undergraduate vocational education in the two periods of 1959-1963 and 1978-1983.

Since 2016, the school has enrolled 641 short-term language students from more than 40 countries on four continents for non-academic education.

In 2017, the school took the lead in establishing the Guangdong "Belt and Road" Vocational Education Alliance, exporting the Guangdong-Qingdao vocational education model, serving the countries and regions along the "Belt and Road", and presenting a new look for internationalized education.
