Shantou University is a comprehensive university under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. It is a provincial and ministerial university jointly built by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is also the only public university in the world that is continuously funded by a private foundation, the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The school covers an area of ​​1,990.20 acres and has a construction area of ​​570,100 square meters.

Since its establishment, the school has always received the cordial care and strong support of the central and local governments. In 2011, Shantou University was listed as a pilot unit for comprehensive reform of self-run education in Guangdong Province; since 2012, the Ministry of Education, the People's Government of Guangdong Province and the Li Ka Shing Foundation have jointly built Shantou University; in 2015, Shantou University entered the ranks of key discipline projects of high-level universities in Guangdong Province; in 2016, Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology, jointly established by Shantou University and the Israel Institute of Technology, was officially established with the approval of the Ministry of Education and enrolled students for the first time in 2017. In November 2018, the school was approved to become the first experimental demonstration school for reform of higher education system and mechanism in Guangdong Province.

The construction and development of the school has been strongly funded by Mr. Li Ka Shing, a famous patriot and international entrepreneur. The Li Ka Shing Foundation has supported Shantou University with more than HK$10 billion and supported the school in implementing a number of educational reforms in terms of talents and resources.

The school's campus network was founded in 1990. At present, the campus network has been extended to every building on campus. Students can access the Internet directly from their dormitories. The school's teaching and scientific research experimental equipment is at the advanced level of domestic universities.

The school has five affiliated hospitals, one dental clinic and four managed hospitals, with a total of 6,421 beds. Among them, the First Affiliated Hospital was selected as the first batch of key construction units of the "Peak Plan" for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. The affiliated hospital provides more than 50% of medical services in Shantou, providing medical students with good medical practice opportunities.

The school continues to expand its international influence, has been shortlisted for the world's authoritative university rankings many times, and has been in the Times Higher Education rankings for six consecutive years. It ranks 51st among mainland Chinese universities in the 2021 World University Rankings; expand international exchanges and cooperation. At present, the school has established close academic exchanges and cooperation with 100 universities in 26 countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Japan, Russia, Australia, and Germany.
