Guangzhou University is a comprehensive university named after the important national central city "Guangzhou". It was merged and established in 2000 and has a tradition of running schools for more than 90 years. The school is based on the location advantages of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, strengthens the mission and responsibility of the university, is determined to reform, forge ahead, and achieve leapfrog development in various undertakings. It is a high-level university construction university in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City.

The school has seized the opportunity of the country's promotion of the "Double First-Class" construction and the construction of high-level universities in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City, adhered to the "four orientations" (facing the world's scientific and technological frontiers, facing the main battlefield of the economy, facing the major needs of the country, and facing the people's life and health), and deepened the "three dockings" with Guangzhou and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (docking with high-quality development, docking with innovation-driven, and docking with expanded opening up). The school currently has "one school and three parks" including University Town, Guihuagang, and Huangpu Research Institute/Graduate School, with 30,250 full-time undergraduates and 6,951 master and doctoral students. The school has a complete range of disciplines and strong comprehensiveness. It has 24 professional colleges, covering ten major disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. There are 10 first-level doctoral degree authorization points and doctoral professional degree authorization points, 4 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 36 academic master's degree authorization points, and 27 master's professional degree authorization points. There are 71 undergraduate majors in 2021, including 39 science and engineering majors, 24 humanities and social sciences majors, and 8 art majors.

Through cultivation and introduction, it has basically formed a high-quality faculty with noble teacher ethics, reasonable structure, superb academic skills and vitality. The school currently has 3,217 faculty and staff on the job, including 2,001 full-time teaching and research personnel, 1,364 of whom are employed as associate senior or above professional positions, and 1,414 have doctoral degrees.

The school adheres to the major demand orientation, first-class construction, innovation-led, characteristic development, and precise focus. According to the discipline construction idea of ​​"thick science and fine engineering, excellent literature and special education, cross-integration, and innovative development", it constantly adjusts and optimizes the discipline and professional structure, deepens the connotation construction of advantageous disciplines in humanities, social sciences, and science, strengthens the characteristic construction of teacher education and art disciplines, builds new engineering disciplines for the needs of new scientific and technological fields and high-tech industries, and explores and expands new medical disciplines with biomedicine, gene editing, bioinformatics, brain science, etc. as the main focus.

It has now formed a key construction discipline system consisting of 4 advantageous discipline groups, including the large civil engineering discipline group, information discipline group, digital economy and management discipline group, and material science and equipment manufacturing discipline group, 6 provincial high-level university construction "rush to the first-class" key construction disciplines, 14 provincial key disciplines, 16 municipal key disciplines and key support disciplines. Six disciplines, including engineering, computer science, chemistry, materials science, environment/ecology, and general social sciences, have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, among which engineering and computer science have entered the top 5‰. The school ranks 99th in the 2021 China Ranking of the Best Universities by Soft Science; 706th in the world and 60th in mainland China in the 2021 US.News World University Ranking; and 601-800th in the world in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Ranking. The school adheres to the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity and the position of undergraduate talent training center.

With the talent training goal of "being both moral and talented, having a sense of family and country, having a broad vision, loving sports, understanding art, and having strong ability development", it has established five public quality education centers of "literature, sports, art, language, and labor", and is committed to cultivating innovative talents with a broad background. The school currently has 31 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 43 Guangdong first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 5 national characteristic majors, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, 1 national college student practice teaching base, 11 national quality courses and national quality open courses, 10 national first-class courses, 1 national teaching team, 45 provincial teaching teams; won 5 national teaching achievement awards, 53 provincial teaching achievement awards. The construction of the "Golden Course" system has achieved remarkable results. There are 10 national first-class undergraduate courses, 44 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 73 provincial series of quality courses, and 200 courses that are interconnected and mutually recognized with courses of world-class universities. The employment quality of graduates has been steadily improving. In the past three years, the average initial employment rate of undergraduates was 90.9%, the overall satisfaction of employers was 98.7%, and more than 95% of them were rooted in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The school adheres to the strategy of scientific and technological innovation, faces the main battlefields of industry and economic society, strengthens the construction of scientific research and innovation capabilities, focuses on the layout of two innovation hubs such as "Major Infrastructure Security + Smart Operation and Maintenance Innovation Hub" and "Cyberspace Information + Intelligent Application Technology Innovation Hub", and six major scientific and technological innovation platforms such as new materials, new equipment and new manufacturing cross-innovation, forming a "one body and two wings" development pattern on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Innovation Corridor, establishing the Huangpu Research Institute/Graduate School, and actively planning new development in Nansha. It now has 3 national scientific research platforms (including cultivation bases) and 51 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. A number of scientific research teams have been formed in the fields of urban infrastructure shock absorption, disaster prevention and safety, advanced cyberspace technology, artificial intelligence and blockchain, intelligent manufacturing, intelligent equipment, smart transportation, astrophysics, analytical science and technology, environmental engineering, clean energy materials, applied mathematics, biocomputing, molecular genetics and evolution, gene editing, geographical science, Lingnan culture and art, and regional development. In 2020, the university invested 1.092 billion yuan in scientific research funds.

In the past three years, the number of National Social Science Foundation projects and National Natural Science Foundation projects undertaken by the university ranked 30th and 80th respectively among universities nationwide; it has been successively awarded 12 national key research and development projects and topics. Since 2016, a total of 2,297 international and domestic patents have been applied for, 1,134 patents have been authorized, and it has been awarded the honorary title of Guangzhou Patent Major. The quality of papers has steadily improved, and the number of papers published in journals such as "Science" and "Nature" has continued to increase. In 2020, the school published 2,505 SCIE/SSCI and CSSCI papers. In the past five years, the school has won 101 national, provincial and ministerial science and social science awards. We will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with universities and enterprises in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, strengthen the deep integration of industry, academia and research, and connect with venture capital, and promote the transformation of "double innovation" scientific and technological achievements in the Greater Bay Area.

Since 2016, the school has signed 151 industry-university-research cooperation agreements with local governments and enterprises and institutions, added 46 new industry-university-research cooperation platforms, joined 22 industry-university-research collaborative cooperation alliances, and built more than 50 R&D centers and more than 300 internship bases. New cooperative relationships have been established with nearly 100 large enterprises such as Guangzhou Radio Group, Guangzhou Yuexiu Group, Guangdong Silk Textile Group, Guangzhou Intelligent Equipment Group, China Machinery Industry Group, Tencent Technology, Huawei, 360 Group, and Alibaba Cloud Computing. A number of innovative achievements such as vibration reduction and earthquake resistance, audio-visual lighting, network security, and water environment technology have been fully applied in major domestic projects or enterprises such as Guangzhou Tower and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The role of consulting and advising has become increasingly prominent, and a number of research reports have been adopted and applied. The school adheres to open education, relying on the international influence of Guangzhou as an important national central city, a comprehensive gateway city, and the core engine of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, focusing on the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the "Belt and Road" initiative, and constantly expanding the internationalization of education. Cooperate with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to build Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou); initiate the establishment of Guangzhou International Sister City University Alliance, with 13 member universities; establish cooperative relations with nearly 200 universities and research institutes in 33 countries and regions, and establish 15 international scientific research cooperation platforms such as China-Italy International Research Center for the Protection of Historical Architecture and Cultural Heritage, Guangzhou University-Linköping University Joint Research Center for Urban Sustainable Development, Guangzhou University-Kiel University Joint Research Center for Gene Interference and Application; cooperate with world-renowned universities such as University of California, San Diego, University of Washington, Heidelberg University, University of British Columbia, University of Queensland, University of Western Australia, University of Padova to carry out "Top Innovative Talents Overseas Study" program and joint doctoral training projects.

In the past three years, more than 3,500 students have been selected and funded to study abroad. Co-organize Confucius Institutes with Wesleyan College in the United States, University of Padova in Italy, and Mazandaran University in Iran. Be knowledgeable and keep pace with the times.
