Founded in 1958, Guangzhou Medical University is a high-level university in Guangdong Province that takes medicine as its advantage and feature and carries out multi-level talent training for doctoral, master's and undergraduate students.

The school currently has two campuses in Panyu and Yuexiu, covering an area of ​​372,300 square meters and a building area of ​​486,500 square meters. It has 22 colleges, 14 affiliated hospitals and 28 research institutions. It has 1 national medical center, 1 national clinical medicine research center, 1 national key laboratory, 11 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 3 provincial and ministerial engineering technology research centers/engineering laboratories, 3 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers, 1 national university science and technology park cultivation base, and 32 municipal (department) key laboratories. It has 1 national key discipline, 7 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, and 32 municipal (department) key disciplines; clinical medicine has been selected as a national "double first-class" construction discipline; clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, molecular biology and genetics, biology and biochemistry, immunology, neuroscience and behavior, and microbiology are among the top 1% in the ESI rankings worldwide, and the comprehensive ESI ranking of all disciplines ranks among the top 100 universities in the country. The school has 19 national clinical key specialties and 80 provincial (ministerial) key specialties, among which respiratory medicine ranks first in the country, allergy department ranks second in the country, thoracic surgery ranks fourth in the country, pediatric surgery ranks fourth in the country, pediatric internal medicine ranks sixth in the country, and psychiatry ranks seventh in the country.

The school adheres to the strategy of "prospering the school with talents". It currently has 7,789 faculty and staff (including 908 in the school headquarters), including a group of outstanding teachers such as the Medal of the Republic winners, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yangtze River Scholars, winners of the National Natural Science Outstanding Youth Fund, national candidates of the New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project, national teaching masters, experts with outstanding contributions to the country, and experts with special government allowances from the State Council; there are 683 doctoral supervisors and 1,279 master's supervisors.

The school is one of the first batch of pilot universities in the country for the "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program". It adheres to and implements the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, and is committed to cultivating socialist builders and successors who highlight responsibility and professional excellence, have strong innovative spirit and practical ability, and are well-rounded in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. There are 21 undergraduate majors, covering five disciplines: medicine, science, management, engineering, and law. Among them, national first-class undergraduate majors account for more than half of the enrollment majors, and provincial first-class undergraduate majors cover all enrollment majors. It has built 1 national clinical teaching and training demonstration center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 2 national virtual simulation experimental projects, 1 national off-campus practical teaching base for college students; 1 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration center, 12 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers; 1 national teaching team, 17 provincial teaching teams; 102 national and provincial quality courses, including 5 national first-class undergraduate courses and 30 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. It has a postdoctoral mobile station for clinical medicine, 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization points (including 1 professional degree doctoral authorization point), 9 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 6 professional degree master's degree authorization points. There are more than 13,000 full-time undergraduates and graduate students. In the past five years, the overall employment rate of graduates has exceeded 96%, ranking among the top similar colleges in the province.

From 2017 to 2021, the school undertook more than 2,500 vertical scientific research projects at or above the municipal (department) level, among which the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects ranked among the top 100 in the country for many consecutive years; won 5 national science and technology awards and more than 20 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards; published more than 10,000 SCI papers in world-renowned magazines including "Nature", "New England Journal of Medicine", "Cell" and "Lancet"; 1 scientific and technological achievement was selected as one of the top ten scientific and technological advances in Chinese universities, and 1 scientific and technological achievement was selected as one of the top ten domestic science and technology news.

The school has extensively carried out foreign academic and educational exchanges and cooperation. It is a pilot unit for the internationalization of undergraduate education in Guangdong Province. It has established stable cooperative and exchange relations with many colleges and research institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and other countries and regions. The school has in-depth cooperation with Professor Jules Hoffmann, a French Nobel Prize winner, to establish the Sino-French Hoffmann Institute of Immunology. The school has been providing education for international students since 2010. Currently, there are 285 international students from 25 countries in Asia, Europe, America and Africa.

Over half a century, the school has gradually formed the spirit of "hard work, down-to-earth, pioneering and enterprising" of the Guangyi people, and established the school-running philosophy of "cultivating both morality and skills, integrating medicine and literature, and focusing on teachers and students". It has closely interacted with regional economic and social development in terms of talent training, scientific research and medical care, and played an important role in major public events such as the fight against SARS, Asian Games medical services, Ebola epidemic prevention and control, and new crown pneumonia epidemic prevention and control.
