The foundation of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine is Guangdong School of Traditional Chinese Medicine founded in 1924. In 1956, Guangzhou College of Chinese Medicine was established with the approval of the State Council. It is one of the first four undergraduate colleges of Chinese medicine in New China. In 1995, it was renamed Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It was originally directly under the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, and was transferred to the management of Guangdong Provincial People's Government in 2000. In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" discipline construction university, and in 2018 it was promoted to a key construction university of Guangdong Province's high-level university. In 2020, it became a co-construction unit of Guangdong Provincial People's Government, Ministry of Education, and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school adheres to the overall leadership of the Party, the socialist direction of running schools, and the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the Party Committee. There are two campuses in Sanyuanli and University Town, covering an area of ​​1,355 acres and a construction area of ​​more than 780,000 square meters. There are 1,608 full-time teachers, including 503 senior titles and 513 associate senior titles. There are a group of famous experts and professors represented by the national medical masters Xuan Guowei and Zhou Daihan. There are 15 secondary colleges; there are 21 majors for enrollment in 2021, and there are 27 majors with students on campus. Among them, there are seven national first-class professional construction sites, including Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine, acupuncture and massage, clinical medicine of Chinese and Western medicine, pharmacy, Chinese medicine resources and development, and rehabilitation therapy, as well as six provincial first-class professional construction sites, including nursing, computer science and technology, applied psychology, public utilities management, biotechnology, and physical education. There are seven first-level disciplines, including Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, Chinese medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and basic medicine, two second-level disciplines, including social medicine and health management, and philosophy of science and technology, and three professional degree categories (fields) of Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine, and nursing. Master's degree authorization; three first-level disciplines, including Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and Chinese medicine, and one professional degree category (field) of Chinese medicine doctoral degree authorization; there are three postdoctoral research mobile stations for Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and Chinese medicine. It has one national "double first-class" construction discipline; six key construction disciplines of Guangdong Province's high-level universities; 25 key disciplines of Chinese medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; two disciplines, clinical medicine and pharmacology and toxicology, are among the top 1% of the ESI global ranking.

The school is one of the first batch of universities identified by the Ministry of Education to implement the "Excellent Doctor (TCM) Education and Training Program Reform Pilot" and undertake the "TCM Outstanding Innovative Talent Model Reform Pilot Project". It was selected as the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. "Focus on classics and strengthen clinical practice" is the most distinctive feature of the school's undergraduate teaching. Degree and postgraduate education began in 1978. It is one of the first universities in the country to obtain the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees. The scale and quality of degree and postgraduate education are among the best in the country. The school has produced many talents and has cultivated a group of outstanding alumni such as Professor Liu Liang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and alumni are all over the world.

The school's scientific research work has obvious characteristics and outstanding advantages. "Clinical and Experimental Research on Myasthenia Gravis Due to Spleen Deficiency" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1992; "A Series of Research on Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment of Spleen Deficiency" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2000. Its landmark achievement "Inheritance and Innovation of Spleen Deficiency Theory and Its Application Research" was selected into the "Chinese Traditional Medicine Major Theory Inheritance and Innovation Collection" in 2016; "Clinical Research on the Treatment of Femoral Head Necrosis with Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine" won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2000. As a major member unit, the school participated in the National "523" Malaria Prevention and Control Project, clinically confirmed the antimalarial efficacy of artemisinin, and made a significant contribution to the invention of artemisinin. The series of research results of Professor Li Guoqiao's team have successively won the National Science Conference Award, the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, and the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The project "Theoretical Innovation and Clinical Application of Acupuncture Treatment for Ischemic Stroke" by Professor Xu Nenggui's team won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2019. The school focuses on building key platforms such as the International Institute of Translational Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the South China Acupuncture Research Center, the Public Service Platform for Innovative Chinese Medicine R&D, the Basic Research Center for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, the Lingnan Medical Research Center, the Guangdong Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (Guangdong Branch of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences), and the Science and Technology Innovation Center (Sanyuanli Campus), and has 57 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial levels.

The school has been cooperating with Southeast Asian and African countries to carry out anti-malarial research. A medical team was sent to Ghana to perform medical assistance tasks. Undertaking the Ministry of Commerce's Comoros Anti-Malaria Center Technical Assistance Project, the Sao Tome and Principe Malaria Prevention and Control Technical Assistance Project, and the Guangdong Provincial Assistance to the Construction of the Papua New Guinea Malaria Prevention and Control Center Project, Comoros achieved the first zero death from malaria in the country's history. Our school's plan for universal medication of artemisinin compound to eliminate the source of infection is included in the "National Medication for Falciparum Malaria-Field Implementation Manual", which contributes Chinese medicine wisdom to accelerate the global malaria prevention and control process.

Based on its own advantages, the school actively participates in the construction of a strong province of traditional Chinese medicine. There are currently 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 hospitals co-built with the government, and an appropriate number of non-directly affiliated hospitals. The First and Second Affiliated Hospitals were selected into the "Peak Plan" for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. The First Affiliated Hospital became the first batch of innovative pilot units for TCM diagnosis and treatment models in the country and the second batch of "National TCM Clinical Research Base Construction Units". It is one of the hospitals with the most regional TCM (specialty) diagnosis and treatment centers in the country; the Second Affiliated Hospital ranked first in the "Top 100 Competitiveness of Chinese TCM Hospitals" and was rated as a "National Civilized Unit"; the Third Affiliated Hospital is the only Class-A Class-III orthopedic hospital in Guangdong Province, with TCM orthopedics as the leading specialty of the hospital. During the SARS period in 2003, our affiliated hospital, as the leader of the TCM expert group against SARS of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, advocated early intervention of TCM, with outstanding clinical effects, and was recognized by experts from the World Health Organization. During the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, our experts, as members of the expert group of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine to respond to the COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control work, participated in the formulation of the first to seventh editions of the diagnosis and treatment plans of the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The affiliated hospital of the school has sent 112 medical staff to Hubei; experts were sent to Malaysia as the leader of the Chinese government's anti-epidemic medical expert group to assist in epidemic prevention and control.

The school actively promotes collaborative innovation and serves the local economy. It has established industry-university-research cooperation with 15 cities and prefectures in and outside the province to help farmers get rid of poverty and promote rural revitalization in mountainous areas. The series of Chinese patent medicines developed by the school, such as Wei Nai An, Gu Xian Tablets, Xiao Ke Pills, Jin Fo Pain Relief Pills, Zi Shen Yu Tai Pills, and He Wei Pain Relief Capsules, have become the core products of Guangdong pharmaceutical companies and are sold well throughout the country. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the school vigorously developed the transfer of scientific and technological achievements and technology transfer, and the contract funds for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements reached 70 million yuan. It has guided the establishment of 50 standardized planting bases of Chinese medicinal materials featuring "Southern Medicine" in the province, with a planting area of ​​more than 2 million mu.

The school vigorously explores and promotes the culture of traditional Chinese medicine and creates a unique humanistic environment for the industry. The Guangdong Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine built by the school is the first batch of national second-level museums in colleges and universities across the country. Together with the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital, it was identified by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine as the first batch of national traditional Chinese medicine cultural publicity and education bases, becoming an important window for Guangdong to spread traditional Chinese medicine culture.

The school gives full play to its geographical and cultural advantages, and actively serves the country's "Belt and Road" initiative and the development strategy of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Since 1974, it has recruited foreign students. So far, it has trained more than 20,000 senior talents in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 110 countries and regions, and established the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Alliance with universities in Hong Kong and Macao, and established 7 overseas centers for traditional Chinese medicine and 3 international cooperation bases for traditional Chinese medicine in many countries and regions. The school and its affiliated hospitals have carried out joint construction of joint laboratories and research bases with internationally renowned universities, jointly opened characteristic brand courses, carried out exchange student programs, carried out in-depth cooperative research in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, jointly established the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Traditional Chinese Medicine Innovation Center, and jointly established a joint research base for traditional Chinese medicine with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
