Located in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, on the shore of Taihu Lake, Jiangnan University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a national "211 Project" key construction university, and a first-class discipline construction university. The school takes the construction of "distinctive high-level research university" as its strategic goal, "high-quality innovative specialized talents" as its training orientation, "quality-based school, talent-based school, service-based school, mechanism-based school, and culture-based school" as its development strategy, and "diligent learning and practice, and strive for perfection" as its school motto. Jiangnan University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a national "211 Project" key construction university, and a double first-class discipline construction university. The school has a long history of running schools and rich cultural heritage. It originated from the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, and has gone through the development periods of National Central University and Nanjing University. In 1958, the Food Industry Department of Nanjing Institute of Technology moved east to Wuxi as a whole and established Wuxi Institute of Light Industry. In 1995, it was renamed Wuxi University of Light Industry. In 2001, Wuxi University of Light Industry, Jiangnan College, and Wuxi Institute of Education merged to form Jiangnan University. In 2003, the Wuxi campus of Donghua University was merged into Jiangnan University.

It covers 9 disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, literature, law, economics, management, education and art. There are 7 postdoctoral mobile stations, 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, including food science and engineering, light industry technology and engineering, textile science and engineering, control science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, design, environmental science and engineering, Marxist theory, mechanical engineering, and software engineering, 1 professional degree doctoral program in biology and medicine, 31 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and 15 professional master's degree authorization categories. Two disciplines, Light Industry Technology and Engineering and Food Science and Engineering, were selected into the list of "Double First-Class" disciplines; there are one national first-level key discipline and five second-level key disciplines in Food Science and Engineering; there are four disciplines in the construction of Jiangsu universities' advantageous disciplines, such as Design, Control Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Textile Science and Engineering, and three "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" Jiangsu Provincial Key Disciplines, such as Chemical Engineering and Technology, Design, and Computer Science and Technology.
