Taiyuan University of Science and Technology is the first heavy machinery undergraduate institution in New China. It is a multidisciplinary university with distinctive educational characteristics. It is also an important talent training and scientific research and development base in the field of major technical equipment in my country. The school is an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education (2006), and was selected as a supporting university for the basic capacity building project of central and western universities by the Ministry of Education (2016).

In 1952, the school's predecessor, Shanxi Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, was founded. Mr. Zhi Bingyuan, the founder of modern China's machinery industry and a pioneer in the development of internal combustion engines in China, served as the principal. In 1953, the school was placed under the Central Government’s First Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1955, the forging majors of Changchun Automobile School and Hankou Machinery Manufacturing School were merged. In 1960, it was renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. In 1965, the hoisting and conveying machinery majors of Dalian Institute of Technology and Shenyang Mechanical and Electrical College were merged. In 1998, it was changed to jointly built by the province and the ministry and mainly managed by the province. In 2004, it was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.

The school adheres to the spirit of "forging ahead with a heavy burden and pursuing truth with sincerity". After more than sixty years of unremitting efforts, it has now developed into a university with engineering as its main focus, liberal arts and sciences as its two wings, and equipment manufacturing as its mainstream disciplines with distinctive characteristics, including science, engineering, philosophy, law, It is a teaching and research university with nine major disciplines such as literature, economics, management, art, and education that support each other, and multi-level education including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

The school currently offers 64 undergraduate majors, including 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national-level specialty major construction sites, 7 provincial-level specialty majors, 6 provincial-level advantageous specialty majors, and 11 provincial-level brand majors. There are 4 first-class majors at the national level, 18 first-class majors at the provincial level, and 6 majors that have passed the engineering education professional certification.

The school currently has 1 provincial-level "1331 Project" advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 2 service industry innovation discipline groups, 3 provincial-level key disciplines, and 15 provincial-level key construction disciplines. The engineering discipline ranks among the top 1% of the ESI world; it has There are 3 doctoral degree programs in first-level disciplines and 16 master's degree programs in first-level disciplines; including business administration (MBA), law, social work, electronic information, machinery, materials and chemical engineering, resources and environment, energy and power, and transportation , 10 master's degree professional degree authorization points in engineering management; there are postdoctoral research mobile stations in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering.

The school currently has 1 national collaborative innovation center; 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by the province and the ministry; 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education; 1 national and local joint engineering research center; 7 provincial key laboratories, provincial There are 13 engineering (technology) research centers at the provincial level, 8 provincial (science and technology) innovation teams; 3 key research bases for humanities and social sciences at provincial universities; 1 key provincial Marxist college; 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers; 9 other types of platforms.

The school currently has 1,263 full-time teachers, including 560 teachers with senior professional titles, 56 doctoral tutors, and 461 master's tutors. It has gathered a group of Yangtze River scholars, millions of talents, new century outstanding talents from the Ministry of Education and Shanxi Province universities. In 2017, Professor Huang Qingxue, director of the Heavy Machinery Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education of our school, was successfully elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The school currently has nearly 26,000 full-time students and has high-quality teaching resources such as national and provincial-level college student innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration bases, college student off-campus practice bases, experimental teaching demonstration centers, high-quality courses, and high-quality video open courses. The school has the Big Data Application Innovation Center of the Ministry of Education’s Data China “Hundred Schools Project” and the Ministry of Education’s ICT Industry-Education Integration Innovation Base. The school's mechanical design, manufacturing and automation major was the first in Shanxi Province to pass the engineering education professional certification, and its graduate employment rate has ranked among the top universities in the province for more than ten consecutive years.

Since the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", the school has won 4 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 National Technological Invention Award, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award and dozens of provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards, and has participated in major national scientific research on many occasions. projects and national key engineering science and technology tasks. In 2001, the school established an industry-university-research board of directors with more than 40 key machinery manufacturing companies across the country, including Taizhong Group, Taigang Group, Liugong Group, Xugong Group, and Shantui Group. More than 200 companies across the country, including Sany Heavy Industry, CITIC Heavy Industry, Zoomlion Heavy Industry, Xugong, Liugong, and Luoyang Bearing, have established industry-university-research strategic cooperation (alliance) relationships, and have cooperated with Jiangsu Haian County to build the Haian Forging Equipment Industry Research Institute. Cooperate with Jincheng City, Shanxi Province to build Jincheng Industrial Technology Innovation Research Institute.

Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 120,000 outstanding students. Its alumni are spread across various fields of the national economy. Many alumni have grown into outstanding scientists, first-class engineers and outstanding entrepreneurs. The school adheres to the international education route and has established friendly relations with dozens of foreign universities such as Auburn University in the United States, University of North Carolina, University of North Florida, San Francisco State University, University of Wollongong in Australia, Kyoto Women's University in Japan, and Toyohashi Creation University in Japan.
