China University of Mining and Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It has successively entered the national "211 Project", "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform Project" and the national "Double First-Class" construction universities. The school is one of the first universities in the country with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees, and has a state-approved graduate school. The school is currently located in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, a national historical and cultural city known as the "Five Provinces Thoroughfare". It has two campuses, Wenchang and Nanhu, covering an area of ​​more than 4,200 acres, with a school building area of ​​1.56 million square meters and a collection of more than 20 million books and documents. The school currently has 2 national "double first-class" construction disciplines, 1 first-level national key discipline, 8 second-level national key disciplines, and 1 national key (cultivation) discipline; 6 Jiangsu Province advantage disciplines, 7 Jiangsu Province key disciplines; 18 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 1 professional degree doctoral program, 36 first-level discipline master's programs, and 19 professional degree master's programs. The school has 23 colleges and 72 undergraduate majors, with more than 23,500 full-time undergraduates, more than 13,300 doctoral and master's students, more than 740 international students, and more than 22,000 continuing education students; there are more than 3,400 faculty and staff; there are 5 national scientific research platforms, 33 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, and 1 national university science and technology park; there is also an independent college, Xuhai College.

China University of Mining and Technology began with the Jiaozuo Road and Mining School founded in 1909. In 1931, it was renamed the Private Jiaozuo Institute of Technology. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the school moved west to Chenggu, Shaanxi in 1938, and jointly established the National Northwest Institute of Technology with the Engineering College of Northeastern University, the Engineering College of Peking University, and the Engineering College of Beiyang University. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, after several twists and turns, it moved back to its original site in Jiaozuo in September 1949. In December 1949, the Jiaozuo Institute of Technology was transferred to the leadership of the then Ministry of Fuel Industry. In March 1950, it was renamed China Institute of Mining and Technology. In April 1951, the school moved from Jiaozuo to Tianjin. In 1952, the mining departments of Beiyang University, Tangshan Jiaotong University, and Tsinghua University were adjusted to China Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1953, the school moved to Beijing and was renamed Beijing Institute of Mining and Technology, becoming one of the famous "eight colleges" on Beijing Academy Road. In 1970, the school moved to Sanhuiba Town, Hechuan County, Sichuan Province, and was renamed Sichuan Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1978, the school began to move to Xuzhou, Jiangsu to run schools, and restored the name of China Institute of Mining and Technology, and established the Beijing Graduate School of China Institute of Mining and Technology in the original school building on Beijing Academy Road. In 1988, the school was renamed China University of Mining and Technology, and Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the school. In 1997, the Beijing Graduate School of China University of Mining and Technology was changed to the Beijing Campus of China University of Mining and Technology. In 1998, the former Ministry of Coal Industry was abolished and the school was placed under the management of the State Coal Industry Bureau. In 2000, the school was transferred to the direct management of the Ministry of Education as a whole. In 2003, the Beijing Campus of China University of Mining and Technology was separated from China University of Mining and Technology and named China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing). So far, China University of Mining and Technology and China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) have become two independent educational entities. In 2004, the school became one of the 56 universities approved by the state to establish graduate schools. In 1997, the school became a key construction university of the national "211 Project", in 2006 it became a construction university of the "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform Project", and in 2017 it became a "Double First-Class" discipline construction university.

With the ups and downs of history and the vicissitudes of the times, China University of Mining and Technology has developed synchronously with China's industrialization process and grown up with the People's Republic of China. The history of the school's development is a struggle history of advancing in the same direction with the country, sharing weal and woe with the industry, and resonating with the local frequency. Over the past 110 years, after 14 relocations and 12 name changes, and after hardships and displacement, it has still passed on the torch and continued to sing, forming the spirit of "self-improvement, hard work, and pursuit of excellence" of the University of Mining and Technology. In old China, the school took "educating talents, preparing for the pioneers of material construction; engaging in research, and seeking the independence of our country's academic" as its historical responsibility. After the founding of New China, the school took "developing mining, mining light, building the motherland, and benefiting mankind" as its sacred mission. After generations of hard work and struggle, China's coal higher education has created a first-class brand and unique spiritual and cultural character, forming the school motto of "respecting morality and learning", the school philosophy of "learning well and using, learning well and creating", and the school spirit of "learning hard, practicing, seeking truth and innovation".

The construction and development of the school have received cordial care from the leaders of the Party and the country. Comrade Mao Zedong's inscription "Developing the Mining Industry" has inspired generations of mining university students to work tirelessly for their careers; Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally instructed the school to embark on the road of rejuvenation in the reform and opening up; Comrade Jiang Zemin came to the school to inspect the school's scientific research work and wrote an inscription for the 90th anniversary of the founding of our school; Comrade Hu Jintao sent a congratulatory letter to the 100th anniversary of the founding of our school; Comrade Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of the education and technology cooperation agreement between our school and the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Chen Zhili, Zhou Ji, Chen Xi, Yuan Guiren, Chen Baosheng and other former leaders of the Ministry of Education have always been concerned about the development of the school's cause and have visited the school to inspect and guide the work.

As the only high-level university with distinctive characteristics named after mining in the country today, China University of Mining and Technology has formed a discipline and professional system with engineering as the main subject, mining as the feature, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, liberal arts, management, law, economics, education and art, and a multi-disciplinary university through long-term development and construction. In recent years, the school has adjusted its discipline layout in accordance with the idea of ​​"strengthening engineering, strengthening science, promoting literature, expanding medicine, and cultivating innovation", optimized the discipline ecology, and continuously enhanced its ability to serve the country's self-reliance in science and technology and the cultivation of high-level talents. In recent years, on the basis of consolidating the original distinctive and advantageous disciplines, the school has established 8 cross-disciplinary disciplines such as carbon neutrality science and engineering, energy storage science and engineering, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, which have built a discipline platform for the national dual-carbon strategy and ecological civilization construction, and promoted the transformation and upgrading of the industry and the construction of intelligent mines; 8 disciplines including engineering, earth science, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, environment and ecology, computer science and social sciences have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, among which engineering has entered the top 1‰, and the field of mineral resources and mining engineering has entered the top 50 in the world for 5 consecutive years; it has formed advantageous disciplines such as mining engineering and safety science, remote sensing mapping and environment, geology and geological engineering, civil engineering and mechanics, mechanical electrical and control, computer and information, management and economics, chemical engineering and materials.

The school has always adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, implemented the party's education policy, implemented the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, and is committed to cultivating students with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, with a sense of home and country, an international perspective, and a spirit of innovation and practical ability, and can lead the pillars of scientific and technological innovation, industry development, and social progress. The school currently has 72 undergraduate majors, 24 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 11 "Ministry of Education Excellent Engineer Program Pilot Majors" and 3 Ministry of Education Comprehensive Reform Pilot Majors; 22 national quality courses, national quality resource sharing courses, national quality video open courses and national quality online open courses have been built, and 18 courses have been selected as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses. Since the beginning of the new century, the school has won 8 national teaching achievement awards, 2 first national textbook construction awards, and 2 national textbook construction advanced individuals. It has 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, and 9 national engineering practice education centers. The school was selected as a project university of the "National Undergraduate Innovative Experimental Program" and a pilot university of the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program". The school has built a national college practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base and a national college student science and technology entrepreneurship internship base. The school has been rated as an advanced collective for graduate employment in the country and Jiangsu Province, a typical university with national innovation and entrepreneurship experience, and a model school for entrepreneurship education in Jiangsu Province. The school adheres to the "four orientations", strengthens organized scientific research, continuously improves scientific and technological innovation capabilities, and has achieved a large number of high-level scientific and technological achievements. The school has 2 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 1 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center, 4 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 3 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 field science observation and research station of the Ministry of Education, and 24 other provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. The university has established Shenzhen Research Institute, Energy Resources Strategic Development Research Institute, and Western Energy Research Institute in Shenzhen, Beijing, Xinjiang and other places respectively. It has established four cross-disciplinary research institutions directly under the university, including Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, Internet of Things (Perceptual Mine) Research Center, Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, and Sustainable Energy Research Institute. It has co-built Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Earth Science and Engineering, Xuzhou Ecological Civilization Construction Research Institute, and China University of Mining and Technology-Xugong Mining Intelligent Equipment Technology Research Institute and other six external cooperation research platforms with Xuzhou local government and enterprises. Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", the university has undertaken 1,839 national scientific research projects including the National "863 Program", "973 Program", major national science and technology projects, key R&D programs, and National Natural Science Foundation projects; won 36 national science and technology awards, ranking among the top universities in the country; and received more than 800 million yuan in research funds in 2021.

The university actively leverages its own advantages to serve the industry's talent training, scientific and technological progress, and local economic and social development, promote industry-university-research collaborative innovation, and was selected as the first batch of "Higher Education Science and Technology Achievement Transformation and Technology Transfer Base" and "National Intellectual Property Demonstration University". The school has established comprehensive cooperation relations with 1 provincial people's government and 14 prefecture-level people's governments, and has co-built research institutions with 14 large state-owned enterprises, with 165 comprehensive cooperation units. The school actively integrates into the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone, joins the Yangtze River Education Innovation Zone Science and Education Cooperation Body, and builds a future innovation port with Nanjing Liuhe District. The school takes advantage of its disciplines and carries out scientific and technological research around the comprehensive treatment of the Pan'an Lake coal mining subsidence area, helping Xuzhou achieve a gorgeous transformation from "one city of coal ash and half of the city of soil" to "one city of green mountains and half of the city of lakes". It initiated the release of the "Pan'an Lake Declaration", which provides intellectual support and technical guarantees for the transformation and development of resource-depleted cities across the country. In December 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited Xuzhou and highly praised the governance of Pan'an Lake. The school has hosted training tasks such as 10,000 coal mine chief engineers and large-scale training for safety production management cadres across the province, and its industry influence has been significantly improved.

The school actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation, continuously promotes internationalization of education, and has established partnerships with nearly 100 foreign universities. Initiated the establishment of the "International Mining, Energy and Environment Higher Education Alliance" with more than 20 foreign universities, becoming an international cooperation and exchange platform for the "Belt and Road". Joined the UNESCO "International Mining Engineering Education Competence Center" and became the center's only flagship university in China. Cooperated with Pakistan and Ecuador to build the "China-Pakistan Mineral Resources Talent Center" and the "China-Ecuador Mining College". Founded the "Tourism Confucius Institute" at Griffith University in Australia. Won the first batch of "High-level International Talent Training Innovation and Practice Base" in the country. Actively hosted and organized international academic conferences with international influence such as the "International Mining Science and Technology Conference", "International Conference on Energy, Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development", "International Seminar on Green Mining Theory and Practice", and "International Pittsburgh Coal Conference", and academic exchanges are becoming increasingly active.

The source is deep and the flow is far, and the journey is the same as the heaven. The goal of China University of Mining and Technology in the new era is: to build our school into a world-class university with energy and resources characteristics by the middle of this century.
