North China University

North China University is a multidisciplinary teaching and research university jointly established by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Shanxi Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and managed by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. The predecessor of the school was the first military school of our party and army, the Taihang Industrial School, founded by the General Headquarters of the Eighth Route Army in the Taihang Anti-Japanese Base in 1941. It is known as the "First People's Military School".

The school is located in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, a famous historical and cultural city in China. It has a complete teaching, scientific research equipment and public service system. It covers an area of ​​2,995 acres, a building area of ​​1.23 million square meters, a total fixed asset value of nearly 3.5 billion yuan, and a total teaching and scientific research equipment value of 819 million yuan. The university has a paper library with more than 2.3 million volumes, nearly 1.36 million electronic books, and 56 well-known Chinese and foreign database resources. In December 2020, the General Office of the CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee and the General Office of the Shanxi Provincial Government issued the "Several Opinions on Supporting North China University in Creating a "Double First-Class" University", promoting North China University to play a scientific research support role in the construction of a first-class innovation ecosystem in the province.

The university currently has 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 5 national defense characteristic disciplines (directions) of the "13th Five-Year Plan" of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, 24 provincial key disciplines, 3 first-class disciplines of the "1331 Project" of Shanxi Province, 1 advantageous characteristic discipline of the "1331 Project" of Shanxi Province, 2 disciplines supported by the Shanxi Province Advantageous Discipline Climbing Plan, and 6 discipline groups in Shanxi Province's service industry innovation. It has 6 postdoctoral mobile stations, 7 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 24 doctoral programs, 25 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 65 master's programs, and master's professional degree authorization points involving 13 categories, 28 fields, and 85 undergraduate majors. The ESI rankings of the engineering discipline group, materials science discipline group, and chemistry discipline group are among the top 1% in the world, and the instrument science and technology discipline was rated B+ in the fourth round of national first-level discipline evaluation.

The school currently has 2,727 faculty members, 1,965 full-time teachers, 281 professors, 551 associate professors, and a doctoral rate of 64%. There are 70 talents with various national talent titles, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, dual-appointed academicians, national senior experts, winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, winners of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, national teaching masters, and national model teachers, 9 national teams and collectives, 11 provincial innovation teams, 45 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, 7 members of the National College Teaching Steering Committee, 20 experts from the National Defense Science and Technology Bureau and the General Armament Department, and 25 senior experts in contact with the Central Committee and the Provincial Party Committee.

The school recruits students from 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country, and has achieved first-class enrollment in 29 provinces. There are nearly 39,000 full-time students, including more than 4,000 doctoral and master's students. The school has been selected into the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education" and the "Basic Capacity Building Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". It has high-quality teaching resources such as national quality courses, national experimental teaching demonstration centers, national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, national college students' cultural quality education bases, national engineering practice education centers, and national first-class majors. The school is one of the first batch of master's degree-granting units in the country. It currently has 8 provincial graduate education innovation centers and 6 provincial graduate joint training bases. It has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for graduate degrees without examination. In 2018, it jointly established the Dezhou Graduate School of North China University with the Dezhou Municipal Government.

The school fully implements the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, solidly promotes the comprehensive reform of "three-dimensional education", and builds "ten major education systems". Adhering to the "student-centered" school-running philosophy, the school comprehensively deepens the comprehensive reform of undergraduate education, and builds a pyramid-shaped talent training model with the characteristics of North China, a talent training construction system for innovative and entrepreneurial education, and a new pattern of characteristic education that integrates innovative and entrepreneurial education, military industry culture education, practice education, and labor education. The school was approved as the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening the reform of innovative and entrepreneurial education, and successfully applied for the Shanxi Province Double Innovation Demonstration Base. It ranked 20th in the 2021 National College Student Competition Ranking. It entered the top 100 in the 2020 China University Innovation Talent Training Quality Ranking of the Alumni Association. In the 2020 International Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Competition, it won the first special prize and AMS award for Shanxi Province, and was the only domestic university to win the highest award SIAM Award.

The school insists on taking military-civilian integration as a school strategy to lead the connotation development, and has formed significant advantages in the training of national defense and military industry talents, collaborative innovation of national defense science and technology, and transformation and incubation of scientific and technological achievements. At present, the school has 5 key national defense disciplines in the "13th Five-Year Plan", ranking first among local co-construction universities. It has "national" national defense research platforms such as national defense science and technology key laboratories, key discipline laboratories, and advanced technology engineering centers. The number of major projects and funds for the National Defense Innovation Plan has continued to rise. The school has always regarded the transformation of military-civilian integration results as an important measure to serve the local area and national defense, and actively promoted the transformation and industrialization of military-civilian integration results. It has selected and actively promoted the on-site transformation of more than 40 military-civilian integration results that can be industrialized and have broad prospects. At the same time, the school actively builds a new system for the cultivation of military-civilian integration talents, creates a military-industrial culture on campus, and has embarked on a military-civilian integration characteristic road for talent cultivation.

Adapting to the needs of the national innovation-driven development strategy, forming a problem-oriented, collaborative innovation, military-civilian integration, and vibrant scientific and technological innovation mechanism, comprehensively strengthening the service of national defense and local services, highlighting the ability of scientific and technological innovation and service to society. It has 80 scientific research institutions at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, and has science and technology industry incubation bases such as the Shanxi North Central National University Science and Technology Park. It has research institutions such as the Military-Civilian Integration Collaborative Innovation Research Institute, the Advanced Energy Materials and Systems Research Institute, the Special Metal Materials and Equipment Research Institute, and the Frontier Interdisciplinary Science Research Institute.

Over the past ten years, the university has undertaken 409 national projects, a total of more than 4,850 projects of various types, and a total funding of more than 4 billion yuan for scientific research projects, of which 851 million yuan was spent on scientific research in 2021. It has won 2 second prizes for national scientific and technological inventions, 3 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress, 124 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, published nearly 5,200 SCI papers, and published more than 390 academic monographs and textbooks. The research results are widely used in national manned spaceflight, deep space exploration, major weapon models, etc. A total of more than 70 results have been applied to major national projects such as "Shenzhou", "Chang'e", "Tiangong", "Beidou", "Fuxing", and "Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge".

The school continues to expand its channels for running schools, and has co-established the Taiyuan School of Energy Materials of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Taiyuan City, and Shanxi Coal Chemistry Institute. It has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Beijing Institute of Technology, a deepening cooperation agreement with Xi'an Jiaotong University, a scientific and technological cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University, and a cooperation agreement between the School of Semiconductors and the School of Software and Microelectronics of Peking University. Facing the Yangtze River Delta, the North China University Nantong Intelligent Optoelectronics and Mechatronics Research Institute will be built in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. The Advanced Materials and Intelligent Equipment Research Institute will be established in Jincheng City, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute will be established in Yuncheng City, Jinzhong City, Changzhi City, and Xinzhou City. The Semiconductor College and Semiconductor Industry Technology Research Institute will be jointly established with the Xinzhou Municipal Government, the Civil Defense Science and Technology College will be jointly established with the Provincial Civil Defense Office, and the Medical and Engineering Integration Innovation Research Institute will be jointly established with Taiyuan Central Hospital. The North China Xinchuang Industrial Base will be jointly established with Taiyuan North China High-tech Industrial Development Zone, the Shanxi Information Technology Application Innovation Research Institute and the Xinchuang Industrial College will be jointly established with Shanxi Baixin, and the "1+1+1" Xinchuang Industrial Ecological Alliance will be jointly established with Great Wall Computer Company and Construction Bank Shanxi Branch, and the Aviation Industry Technology Research Institute and General Aviation Industry College will be jointly established with Shanxi Aviation Industry Group.
