Yantai University is located in Yantai, a national historical and cultural city and the most charming city in China. It is a key comprehensive university in Shandong Province and a high-level university construction university with "strong characteristics" in Shandong Province. The school was founded in 1984 and was jointly assisted by Peking University and Tsinghua University. The school is adjacent to the Yellow Sea in the east and Qingshan in the west. It has a beautiful environment and a pleasant climate. It is the coastal university closest to the sea and has the longest coastline in China.

The school officially enrolled students in 1985 and became a master's degree-granting institution in 1998. In March 2001, with the approval of the Shandong Provincial Government, the former Shandong Building Materials Industry School and the former Shandong Fisheries School were merged into Yantai University. In 2012, it was approved as the first batch of project construction units of Shandong Province's famous school project. In the same year, it was approved to serve the national special needs doctoral talent training project. In 2019, it became a provincial and municipal co-construction university, and the "Pharmacy" and "Materials Science and Engineering" disciplines were selected as Shandong Province's "first-class disciplines" construction projects. In 2020, the school was approved for the project postdoctoral recruitment qualification, and was selected as a "strong characteristic" high-level university construction in Shandong Province. The two disciplines of law and pharmacy were selected as Shandong Province's "advantageous characteristic disciplines" construction. High-level disciplines were shortlisted in the 901-1000 level of the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Soft Science.

The school covers an area of ​​2,100 acres, a construction area of ​​1.0198 million square meters, and a total value of 542 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment. At present, the construction of Yantai University Science and Education Park has started in Yantai Development Zone, with a planned area of ​​1,200 acres and a planned construction area of ​​670,000 square meters.
