HIT is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The school is located at No. 92 Xidazhi Street, Nangang District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. It also has campuses in Weihai City, Shandong Province and Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. The school was founded in 1920. In 1951, it was identified as one of the two model universities in the country to learn from foreign higher education models. In 1954, it entered the ranks of the first six universities in the country's key construction and was hailed as the "cradle of engineers." The school was included in the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project" in 1996, and was identified as one of the first nine universities in the national "985 Project" in 1999. In 2000, it merged with Harbin University of Architecture, which has the same origin, to form the new Harbin Institute of Technology. In 2017, it was selected into the list of Class A universities in the "Double First-Class" construction. In 2022, 8 disciplines were selected into the new round of "Double First-Class" construction list.

The successfully developed space manipulator has realized the world's first human-machine collaborative in-orbit maintenance scientific experiment on Tiangong-2. The successfully developed new generation of magnetic focusing Hall electric thrusters has been realized in space for the first time in the world, and shape memory has been realized for the first time in the world. The on-orbit controllable deployment of polymer solar cell structures, the successfully launched "Longjiang-2" became the world's first microsatellite to independently complete Earth-Moon transfer, near-Moon braking, and circumlunar flight. The Mars rover mobile system and transfer ramp mechanism that he presided over and participated in helped "Zhurong" to achieve Mars surface patrol and exploration. A number of technical achievements supported China's first lunar sample return mission. China's first large-scale scientific project for simulating extreme space environments is being built. It has participated in 14 major national science and technology projects such as the lunar exploration project, and won the 2018 National Highest Science and Technology Award. A total of 10 projects have been selected as the top ten scientific and technological advances in Chinese universities.
