Harbin Normal University is located in Harbin, a historical and cultural city known as the "Ice City Summer Capital". It is an important talent training base and scientific research base for education, art, humanities and social sciences and natural sciences in Heilongjiang Province. It is a high-level university that is a key construction project of Heilongjiang Province and an excellent school for undergraduate teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The school is a national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China" university and a pilot university for the comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education's "Three-dimensional Education".

The school was founded in 1951. Its predecessor was Songjiang Provincial Xingzhi Normal School established by our party in the Northeast Liberated Area in 1946. It went through the period of Harbin Normal College (1951-1956) and Harbin Normal University (1956-1980). In 1980, it was renamed Harbin Normal University. In 2000, Hulan Normal College and Heilongjiang Agricultural Reclamation Normal College were merged, and in 2002, Heilongjiang Material School (Heilongjiang Material Workers University) was merged to form the new Harbin Normal University.

The school has two campuses, Jiangnan and Jiangbei, covering an area of ​​1.547 million square meters, a building area of ​​1.519 million square meters, fixed assets of nearly 2.95 billion yuan, and teaching and scientific research equipment with a total value of more than 400 million yuan. An exhibition center with four museums as the core, with the school history museum and the museum as the core, has been built.
