Harbin Medical University is located in Harbin, the ice city of the north. It is a medical university with a profound historical and cultural heritage. It was established by Harbin Medical College, founded by Dr. Wu Lien-teh, a pioneer of Chinese medicine in 1926, and the First and Second Branches of Xingshan China Medical University. After 96 years of development and construction, the school has inherited Dr. Wu Lien-teh's spirit of "sincere patriotism, self-reliance and entrepreneurship", carried forward the glorious tradition of "political firmness and excellent technology" of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Health School, and adhered to the school motto of "straight to the rope, erudition and medicine", and its comprehensive strength has been continuously enhanced. It has a considerable development scale and distinctive school characteristics. The school is a university jointly built by the ministry, the commission and the province, a high-level university and a university with advantageous and distinctive disciplines in Heilongjiang Province, the Chinese leading unit of the Sino-Russian Medical University Alliance, a national basic science research and teaching talent training base, and the first batch of seven-year higher medical education institutions piloted by the Ministry of Education.

The school has 19 secondary colleges and 8 institutions. There are 10 affiliated hospitals, including 5 directly affiliated hospitals. There are 17,358 faculty and staff (including 514 in Daqing Campus), 15,098 undergraduate students in general education (including 7,129 in Daqing Campus), 7,775 graduate students (including 1,605 doctoral students and 6,170 master's students), and 325 international students. The university has 9 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 62 second-level discipline authorization points, 11 first-level master's degree authorization points, 64 second-level discipline authorization points, 5 postdoctoral research mobile stations, and 31 undergraduate majors. There are 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key cultivation discipline, 21 provincial key disciplines (groups), 35 national clinical key specialty construction projects, and 9 national key professional bases for standardized training of resident physicians. There are 12 national first-class undergraduate professional construction points and 2 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction points. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation, 1 discipline entered Class A and 8 disciplines entered Class B. 5 disciplines entered the top 1% of ESI international discipline rankings. There are 2 international cooperation joint laboratories, 4 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 3 key laboratories of the National Health Commission, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by the province and the ministry, 22 provincial key laboratories, 11 provincial key laboratories of ordinary colleges and universities, 2 academician workstations jointly built with local governments and enterprises, and 1 northern medical translation research cooperation center. In the past ten years, he has edited 81 planned textbooks and reprinted planned textbooks of the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission. He won 1 first prize and 1 second prize in the National Textbook Construction Award, and 1 advanced individual in the National Textbook Construction Award. He was approved for 3 pilot projects for the reform of the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education. He won 12 bronze medals in the China International "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. He won 4 second prizes for national teaching achievements and 36 provincial teaching achievement awards. 382 provincial education and scientific research projects were approved, and 875 national education and teaching papers were published, of which 16 were included in SCI. 9777 scientific research projects of various types were obtained, and 2 national key basic research and development programs ("973" programs) were presided over, 1 national high technology development program ("863" program), 4 national international cooperation projects, 1 national major science and technology project, and 5 national key research and development program projects were approved. 1455 National Natural Science Foundations were approved. 946 awards were won, including 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 first prizes of the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Scientific Research), 2 first prizes of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 China Patent Award Excellence Award, 28 first prizes and 206 second prizes of the Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Award. 25088 scientific research papers were published, of which 8694 were included in SCI. 696 books were compiled and published. 826 valid patents and 332 invention patents.
