Northeast Petroleum University (formerly known as Northeast Petroleum College and Daqing Petroleum College) is located in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. It was founded in 1960. It is a university with engineering as its main discipline and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, education and art. In 1978, it was identified as one of the 88 national key universities. The school is a university jointly built by Heilongjiang Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. It is a high-level university that is key to the construction of Heilongjiang Province.

The school began to recruit undergraduates in 1961, obtained the right to confer master's degrees in 1981, and obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees in 1993. The school has 66 undergraduate majors and 23 higher vocational majors. 20 provincial and above first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, including 13 national ones. 8 national characteristic professional construction sites, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 6 national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" pilot majors, and 19 provincial key majors. 1 national key first-level discipline, 1 provincial key discipline group, 6 provincial key first-level disciplines; 4 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 2 postdoctoral research workstations; 4 doctoral degree authorization first-level disciplines, 22 master's degree authorization first-level disciplines; 10 master's degree categories (including resources and environment, materials and chemical engineering, machinery, energy and power, civil engineering and water conservancy, electronic information, business administration, social work, accounting, and Chinese international education); engineering disciplines have always been in the top 1% of the world ESI since 2016.

The school covers an area of ​​1.6912 million square meters, of which the Qinhuangdao campus covers an area of ​​332,800 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment exceeds 668 million yuan. A 10-gigabit campus network has been built. The library has a collection of 2.64 million books, 16 types of data resources, and a national intellectual property information service center. A national university science and technology park has been built. The school is an excellent university in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work and has won 2 national teaching achievement awards. The school has been approved for 3 new engineering research and practice projects and 1 new liberal arts research and reform practice project by the Ministry of Education. It has built 7 national-level and 33 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, and has been approved for 1 national-level and 1 provincial-level ideological and political demonstration course. The school's scientific research results have won 15 national science and technology awards, including 1 special prize for national science and technology progress, 1 first prize, 8 second prizes, and 2 third prizes; 2 second prizes for national technological inventions; and 1 second prize for national natural sciences. In addition, it has won 1 Science and Technology Progress Award and 1 China Patent Gold Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation. The school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. Through the implementation of internationalization strategies, the scope and range of international exchanges and cooperation have been continuously broadened, and the international influence has been continuously expanded. It has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with more than 30 high-level universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad in more than 10 countries in Europe, America and Africa, and actively carried out overseas exchange programs for students including national government-sponsored, joint training, exchange study, short-term exchange, etc. Teachers are encouraged to carry out substantive cooperation such as international academic exchanges and cooperative scientific research, and jointly build joint laboratories such as petroleum engineering and unconventional oil and gas research with universities in the United States, Germany, Canada and other countries, jointly participate in the EU ERASMUS+ project, and cooperate in intergovernmental scientific research cooperation projects such as "Energy and Water Ties and Key Technologies for Efficient and Green Utilization". The school actively carries out education for international students in China and trains foreign students from more than 10 countries.

The school publishes newspapers and periodicals such as "Journal of Northeast Petroleum University" (China Science and Technology Core Journal and National Chinese Core Journal), "Journal of Northeast Petroleum University" and "Higher Education Research", and exchanges with more than 300 universities across the country.
