Jilin Agricultural University is located in Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province. It is a provincial key university in Jilin Province, a high-level applied research university with Jilin characteristics (Class A), a university jointly built by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, a supporting unit for the construction of the "Jilin Institute of China's Engineering Science and Technology Development Strategy" jointly built by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a university of the basic capacity building project for colleges and universities in central and western China; the first batch of provincial universities under the "Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Plan" ("111" Plan) of the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, a national typical employment experience university, one of the first 50 "National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Typical Experience Universities" and the first batch of 99 national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the first batch of scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education.

The predecessor of Jilin Agricultural University was the Agricultural Cadre School established by the Ximan Branch of the CPC Central Committee in Heilongjiang Province in 1948. It was changed to Heilongjiang Agricultural College in 1950 and renamed Bei'an Agricultural College in 1956, starting a four-year undergraduate education. In 1958, Bei'an Agricultural College, Changchun Animal Husbandry and Veterinary University, and Changchun Agricultural College Preparatory Office merged to form Changchun Agricultural College, and Premier Zhou Enlai personally wrote the name of the school. In 1959, the school was renamed Jilin Agricultural University. After more than 70 years of construction and development, it has become a provincial key university with agriculture and life sciences as its advantages and characteristics, and coordinated development of agriculture, science, engineering, medicine, literature, management, law, education, economics, and art. It is an irreplaceable and important talent training, scientific and technological innovation and promotion service base for national and regional agricultural and rural development.

The school has 20 colleges, 1 directly affiliated teaching department and 1 graduate school. It is one of the first universities in my country with the right to confer bachelor's and master's degrees, and the first university among provincial universities to be authorized to grant doctoral degrees. It has 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees and 9 postdoctoral research stations; 21 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 12 master's professional degree authorization categories; 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 3 ministerial key disciplines and 13 provincial characteristic high-level disciplines; botany and zoology, and agricultural science disciplines are among the top 1% in the ESI global ranking.

The school currently has 20,990 full-time students, including 16,599 undergraduates, 3,767 master's students, 505 doctoral students, and 119 international students. There are 4,348 correspondence students. In 2021, the Jilin Province New Agricultural Science Changbaishan Innovation College was established, and the National New Agricultural Science Construction Work Promotion Conference was successfully hosted to create the "Jilin Model" of collaborative education for the construction of new agricultural science. Over the years, the implementation rate of graduates' graduation destinations has always been at the forefront of universities in the province.

The university has 22 national and ministerial scientific research platforms, including the base for the exploration, creation and application of high-quality, high-yield and disease-resistant germplasm resources of fungi crops, the international joint research center for the creation of new germplasm resources of edible fungi, the national engineering laboratory for deep processing of wheat and corn, the national and local joint engineering research center for the selection and development of new ginseng varieties, the national and local joint engineering research center for the research and utilization of economic fungi, the key laboratory of animal production and product quality and safety of the Ministry of Education, the key laboratory of straw biology and utilization of the Ministry of Education, the international cooperation joint laboratory of modern agricultural technology of the Ministry of Education, the Changchun observation and experimental station of national crop germplasm resources, the national station for the identification of crop varieties and characteristics, and 63 provincial scientific research platforms. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the university has undertaken 2016 scientific research projects of various levels and types, with a research fund of 870 million yuan. It has won 3 national science and technology awards and 97 provincial and ministerial awards. The number and quality of provincial science and technology awards have ranked first among provincial universities for many years. The sponsored journals "Journal of Jilin Agricultural University" and "Journal of Economic Animals" have been selected as China's fine science and technology journals, Chinese core journals and China's science and technology core journals respectively. The first Jilin Rural Revitalization Strategy Research Institute was jointly established with the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. A scientific and technological service system marked by the "Antu Model" of school-local cooperation, the "Minle Model" of school-village cooperation, the "Borui Model" of school-enterprise cooperation, the "Haotian Model" of targeted poverty alleviation, the "Jingyu Model" of scientific and technological assistance, and the "Zambia Model" of international cooperation has been formed. It has created a cumulative technological income of more than 18 billion yuan and won the first batch of scientific and technological achievements transformation contribution awards (units) from the provincial government. Academician Li Yu of the school was awarded the honorary title of model of poverty alleviation and received the award from General Secretary Xi Jinping at the National Poverty Alleviation Summary and Commendation Conference.

The school adheres to open education and has established inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with 93 colleges and institutions in countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, and Zambia. It is a member of the "Belt and Road" South-South Cooperation Agricultural Education and Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, the vice chairman unit of the China-Africa Green Agriculture Development Research Center, and the Zambia Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center built on behalf of the country is known as a "South-South Cooperation Model". It has jointly carried out Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools with the University of Camerino in Italy and Western Kentucky University in the United States, and is a qualified institution for Chinese government scholarships. As the Chinese implementing body, it vigorously carries out tripartite cooperation between the Chinese government, the Zambian government, and the Gates Foundation of the United States; it has established the "China-Zambia College" at the University of Zambia to carry out overseas education; it is the first provincial university in Jilin Province to carry out national-level foreign aid training and the first unit to carry out national "going out" overseas human resources training.

The school covers an area of ​​1,347 hectares, of which the campus covers an area of ​​312.66 hectares, the teaching and scientific research base covers an area of ​​1,034.34 hectares, the campus building area is 444,800 square meters, the total value of fixed assets is 3.1 billion yuan, the library has 1.7773 million paper books, and 1.335 million electronic books. The school is adjacent to the 5A-level scenic spot Jingyuetan National Forest Park. The campus planning is unique and the scenery is pleasant. It is known as the "Garden School".

Since its establishment, the school has been adhering to the school motto of "Virtue, Honoring Wisdom, Being Honest and Prudent", always adhering to the socialist direction of running schools, closely focusing on the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, and adhering to serving the national and local economic construction and social development.
