Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology is located on the banks of the Songhua River in Harbin, the beautiful summer capital of the ice city. After 74 years of construction and development, it has become a multi-disciplinary university with coordinated development of science, engineering, management, liberal arts, economics, and law, with engineering as the main discipline and mining as the main discipline. It has formed a "one school, two locations, and three campuses" school-running pattern, and has made outstanding contributions to the regional economy and society and the development of my country's coal industry. It is known as the "backbone of the coal industry." The school is a university jointly built by the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Emergency Management (State Administration of Work Safety), an excellent university in the national teaching work level assessment, and a demonstration university for the construction of characteristic applied undergraduate programs in Heilongjiang Province.

The predecessor of the school was the first coal miner cadre school in Northeast China established by the Communist Party of China in Jixi in 1947. In 1954, it merged with Hegang Coal Mine School to form Jixi Coal Mine School. In 1958, Jixi Mining College for undergraduate education was established on this basis. In 1964, it was changed to Jixi Coal Mine School due to the adjustment of colleges and universities. In 1978, Jixi Mining College for undergraduate education was rebuilt, and in 1981 it was renamed Heilongjiang Mining College, which was affiliated to the former Ministry of Coal Industry. In 1998, it was transferred to the local government and implemented a system of co-construction by the central and local governments and management by Heilongjiang Province. In 2000, it was renamed Heilongjiang Institute of Science and Technology. In 2013, it was renamed Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology.

The school adheres to the concept of "student-oriented and responsible for life", closely focuses on the fundamental task of moral education, follows the laws of education and teaching and the laws of talent growth, and strives to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents with "high ideological and moral quality and strong engineering practice ability". The school currently has 17 colleges and 23,874 full-time students, including 22,515 undergraduates and 1,359 doctoral and master's students. The employment rate of undergraduate graduates has been at the forefront of provincial universities for 19 consecutive years. It has been awarded the titles of "National University with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment" and "National Advanced Collective for Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Education" by the Ministry of Education.

The school adheres to the concept of "respecting teachers and serving teachers" and vigorously implements the strategy of "strengthening the school with talents". There are 1,755 faculty members. In recent years, a large number of outstanding talents and teams represented by "National Excellent Teachers", "Provincial Model Teachers", "Provincial Excellent Teachers", "Provincial Teaching Masters" and provincial "teaching teams" and "education and research teams" have emerged, as well as a large number of "dual-qualified" teachers.

The school has established a doctoral special talent training program for "Emergency Rescue and Impact Control of Coal Mine Accidents", which can confer a doctoral degree in the first-level discipline of safety science and engineering, and has a postdoctoral research mobile station in the first-level discipline of safety science and engineering. It has the right to recommend master's students, 11 first-level master's degree authorization points, 1 second-level master's degree authorization point, and 9 master's professional degree authorization categories. It has 9 provincial leading talent teams. It has 5 provincial and ministerial key laboratories (including 1 provincial and ministerial co-construction laboratory), 9 provincial and ministerial engineering technology research centers, 1 provincial collaborative innovation center, 1 provincial key cultivation think tank, and 1 provincial university humanities and social sciences key research base. It has a number of high-end scientific and technological service platforms such as the first-class engineering training and basic experimental center in China.

The school currently has 59 undergraduate majors, including 5 national first-class professional construction points and 12 provincial first-class professional construction points. 2 national first-class courses, 16 provincial first-class courses, and 2 provincial curriculum ideological and political construction demonstration courses. 2 national off-campus practical education bases for college students, 1 provincial talent training model innovation demonstration zone, 1 national demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching project, 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 provincial demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching project, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 talent training centers for revitalizing the old industrial base in Northeast China, and 1 national coal mine safety training base.

Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school has undertaken 45 national projects such as the National Science and Technology Support Plan, the National Key R&D Program (Topics), and the National Natural Science Foundation Project, and 131 provincial and ministerial projects, with a total science and technology funding of 315 million yuan. It has won 63 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. There are 5 provincial (ministerial) key laboratories such as the Deep Coal Mining Ground Pressure Control and Gas Governance Laboratory, 9 provincial (ministerial) engineering centers, 1 provincial think tank of the Resource City Sustainable Development Research Center, and 1 provincial collaborative innovation center for "Mineral Resources Development and Utilization". The "Basic Research on Safety of Gas and Other Hydrocarbon Gas Transportation Pipelines" Central Laboratory, which serves the national safety production technology support system, is an early research platform for hydrate technology to prevent gas disasters and gas solidification storage and transportation at home and abroad.

The school insists on strengthening foreign exchanges and cooperation. Actively promote cross-cultural learning interactions, broaden the scope of international cooperation, carry out Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with Russia and Canada for more than 20 years, and establish inter-school partnerships with 29 foreign universities.

The school has won more than 20 national honors such as "National Civilized Unit", "National May 1st Labor Award", "National Education System Caring for the Next Generation Advanced Collective", "National May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee", and more than 80 provincial honors such as "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization", "Civilized Unit Model", and "Top Ten Units for Teacher Ethics Construction".
