The history of the school can be traced back to the Qingdao Special Higher School founded in 1909. For more than a hundred years, the school has taught profound knowledge and cultivated great talents. In response to the needs of the country, it has passed on the torch and forged ahead. More than 400,000 outstanding alumni have come out of here, making important contributions to the regional economic and social development and the progress of human civilization. In 2021, we were shortlisted for the four world authoritative university rankings of ARWU, US News, QS Asia University and Times Higher Education (THE), achieving a historic breakthrough in the world's four major university rankings, including being ranked among the top 500 in the world in the Soft Science World University Rankings for three consecutive years. We leverage the unique advantages and brand advantages of medical and teacher education disciplines to promote the city-school co-construction of Qingdao University Qingdao Medical College, help Qingdao create a national regional medical center, and build a first-class medical center city in the north of the Yangtze River. Promote the city-school co-construction of Qingdao University Qingdao Normal College, and the bureau-school co-construction of Qingdao University Education Group, build 11 affiliated primary and secondary schools, and help Qingdao's high-quality development of basic education. Co-build Qingdao Entrepreneur College, Qingdao Law School, and Qingdao Social Work College with Qingdao City, actively provide advice and suggestions for regional economic and social development, and create a characteristic think tank service platform.

The school currently has three campuses: Fushan Campus, Jinjialing Campus, and Songshan Campus, covering an area of ​​2,655 acres and a construction area of ​​1.14 million square meters. It has 34 colleges and a medical department, with 79 undergraduate majors, covering 10 disciplines including literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, education, and art. There are 10 postdoctoral mobile stations, 14 first-level doctoral programs, 3 types of doctoral professional degrees; 41 first-level master's programs, 28 types of master's professional degrees.

It has 2 national key disciplines, 20 Shandong provincial key disciplines, and 8 Shandong provincial first-class disciplines. It was selected as a "first-class" construction university of Shandong Province's high-level universities and one peak discipline, four advantageous and characteristic disciplines, and three cultivation disciplines; its academic influence ranked 813th in the world, and 11 disciplines including clinical medicine, engineering, chemistry, materials science, neuroscience and behavior, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, computer science, molecular biology and genetics, environment and ecology, and general social sciences entered the top 1% in the world; 13 disciplines were selected as world-class disciplines in 2021 by Soft Science; 25 disciplines were selected as the best disciplines in China in 2021 by Soft Science, among which systems science ranked second in the country, becoming the only discipline among the top disciplines in provincial universities for two consecutive years; 14 disciplines were included in the USNews 2022 World University Discipline Rankings.

There are more than 42,000 full-time students, including more than 10,000 graduate students, more than 32,000 undergraduates, and more than 600 international students. There are more than 3,900 faculty members, more than 2,600 full-time teachers (501 professors and 897 associate professors), including 80 national high-level talents and 165 provincial and ministerial high-level talents. 67% of full-time teachers have doctoral degrees. There is one Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities.

The school has built a national college student cultural quality education base, a Chinese language education base, and a national intellectual property information service center for universities. It is a demonstration university for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform of the Ministry of Education, a demonstration university for the reform of teacher assessment and evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and a demonstration base for studying in China of the Ministry of Education.

It has 1 national key laboratory co-built by the province and the ministry, 1 provincial and ministerial co-built collaborative innovation center, 1 national and local joint engineering research center, 1 national demonstration international science and technology cooperation base, 1 higher education discipline innovation and intelligence introduction base, and 1 national international joint research center. There are 38 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering technology research centers, collaborative innovation centers, and humanities and social science research bases.

Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school has undertaken 1,026 national projects such as the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation; published 18,298 papers included in SCI, 544 papers included in SSCI, and 970 papers included in CSSCI; won 1 second prize for national scientific and technological progress, 76 provincial and ministerial awards; and obtained more than 1,828 authorized patents.

The school adheres to the internationalization strategy of running schools, and has established friendly exchanges and cooperation with more than 180 colleges and universities in nearly 30 countries and regions, and established more than 200 projects such as teacher-student exchanges, joint training, and cooperative scientific research. Two Confucius Institutes (classrooms) have been established abroad. There are 96 source countries for international students.

The school is rooted in the land of Qilu and developed in Qingdao.
