In order to optimize the development layout of higher education in Shandong Province, the Shandong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government implemented the reform of integrating science and education, integrating the resources of the former Taishan Medical College, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital and other resources to establish Shandong First Medical University. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shandong First Medical University was officially established in February 2019, and the name of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences was also hung.

Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences) is a key university in Shandong Province and the largest medical science research institution in Shandong Province. In 2020, it was selected as a "first-class" university in Shandong Province's high-level university construction project. The school (institute) has campuses in Jinan and Tai'an. The main campus is located in the core area of ​​Jinan International Medical Science Center (No. 6699, Qingdao Road, Jinan City). There are research institutions in Jinan, Qingdao, Jining and other places, with a total area of ​​more than 6,000 acres.

The school (institute) has a complete talent training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees. At present, it has 1 first-level discipline authorized for doctoral degrees, 7 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 7 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 85 master's degree authorization points. There are 47 undergraduate majors, including 4 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 16 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites; 4 national characteristic majors and 8 provincial characteristic majors; 5 provincial high-level application-oriented construction majors (groups), 1 Shandong Province old and new kinetic energy conversion docking industry major group, and 3 provincial outstanding engineer education and training program pilot majors. 27 courses have been approved as national and provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 1 course has been selected as a provincial ideological and political course "Golden Course". At present, there are more than 25,000 full-time students in the school, including 22,333 undergraduates, 2,670 postgraduates, and 457 international students.

Seven disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavior, chemistry, and immunology, are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences ranks 10th among independent medical universities in the country in terms of science and technology value. 1 discipline was selected as a high-level discipline in Shandong Province, 1 discipline was selected as a high-level discipline in Shandong Province, and 6 disciplines were selected as key disciplines in Shandong Province. There are more than 50 high-level innovation platforms at the provincial and ministerial level, including the National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, the National Health Commission Key Laboratory, and the Provincial Key Laboratory; there is 1 postdoctoral research workstation. In the past five years, it has won 1 second prize in the National Natural Science Award, 3 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, 2 Shandong Province Science and Technology Highest Awards, and 9 first prizes in Shandong Province Science and Technology Awards.

It has many affiliated hospitals and has formed a medical system in Shandong University, directly serving more than 10 million people each year. Among them, the affiliated provincial hospital and the affiliated tumor hospital are among the top 100 in the country. There are 16 national key clinical specialties and 7 national drug clinical trial institutions. It was the first in the country to basically eliminate kala-azar, filariasis, malaria, and leprosy on a provincial basis, winning the "four consecutive championships" in the history of disease elimination in New China. It currently guides the province to carry out prevention and treatment of occupational diseases, skin diseases, parasitic diseases, early diagnosis and treatment of tumors, radiation protection, blindness prevention and treatment, rare diseases, etc.; it has a World Health Organization Cooperation Center.

The school (institute) is one of the first institutions to award Shandong Provincial Government Scholarships for Foreign Students. Since 2004, it has recruited undergraduate and master's students from more than 20 countries and regions such as the United States, South Korea, and India, and has a good reputation for international education. It has established good cooperative relations with universities and medical and scientific research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the school (institute) will vigorously implement the "three-step" strategy and the "135 Project" in accordance with the development blueprint outlined by the first party congress of the school (institute).
