Linyi University is a comprehensive university with coordinated development of science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management, medicine, law, art, and education. The school is a famous university with distinctive characteristics in Shandong Province, the first batch of universities supported by the construction of applied undergraduate universities in Shandong Province, and a key university in the "industry-education integration" project of the National Development and Reform Commission. It has been evaluated by the Ministry of Education as an "excellent school for undergraduate teaching work level evaluation".

The school is located in Linyi City, Shandong Province, a historical and cultural city, a capital of commerce and logistics, a waterfront ecological city, a red tourism city, and a national civilized city. The predecessor of the school was an anti-Japanese military and political university-style school supported by the first branch of the Chinese Anti-Japanese Military and Political University in 1941. After several migrations and mergers, the school name has changed several times. It has gone through the development stages of Binhai Jianguo College, Linyi First Normal School, Linyi Teachers Training School, Linyi Education College, Linyi Teachers College, and Linyi Normal College. In 2010, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be renamed Linyi University. In 2018, it was approved to confer master's degrees. In 2021, Linyi University Medical College was established.
