Hangzhou Normal University

Hangzhou Normal University is a key university in Zhejiang Province. It is a comprehensive university with a tradition of teacher education, equal emphasis on liberal arts and science, and coordinated development of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The predecessor of the school can be traced back to the Zhejiang Government Two-Level Normal School, one of the six national higher normal schools founded in 1908. Hangzhou Normal College was established in 1978. Around 2000, five schools including Hangzhou Education College were successively merged. In 2007, it was renamed Hangzhou Normal University.

In the course of running schools for more than 100 years, Hangzhou Normal University has always kept pace with the times and shared the fate of the nation. It has promoted literature and education, and has passed down from generation to generation. It has been self-reliant and never stopped singing. It has adhered to the inheritance of the school motto of "diligence, prudence, sincerity, forgiveness, liberal arts and diligence", and carried forward the spirit of the Normal University of "inclusiveness, openness, learning and progress, and pursuit of excellence", forming the characteristics of "humanities school, art campus". Famous teachers such as Lu Xun, Li Shutong, Ye Shengtao, Zhu Ziqing, and Xia Yizun have taught at the school, and have cultivated outstanding alumni with outstanding achievements in various fields such as Feng Zikai, Pan Tianshou, and Chen Jiangong. It became the source of the new cultural movement in Zhejiang at that time, the earliest main position for spreading democratic and scientific ideas, and one of the birthplaces of modern Chinese education, modern Chinese art education, and the early activities of the Communist Party of China. Bathed in the spring breeze of reform and opening up, the school keeps pace with the development of the times, and its school-running ability and level are constantly improving. In the new era, a large number of outstanding talents have emerged, such as Cai Ronggen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jack Ma, an innovator in the digital economy.

The school has a beautiful environment and beautiful scenery. It currently has three campuses: Cangqian, Yuhuangshan, and Xiasha, which are located in Hangzhou Future Science and Technology City, the shore of West Lake, and the bank of Qiantang River, covering an area of ​​1.793 million square meters. The school has 23 colleges (departments) and 1 directly affiliated hospital (Hangzhou Second People's Hospital). There are 25,115 full-time students (excluding independent colleges), including 4,130 full-time master students, 64 doctoral students, and 336 international students. There are 2,492 faculty and staff, including 1,791 full-time teachers (nearly 62% of senior titles), more than 80 national and provincial high-level talents such as full-time academicians, shared academicians, Yangtze River Scholars of the Ministry of Education, and winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, and 4 national outstanding teachers. The school was selected as the first batch of provincial overseas high-level talent innovation and entrepreneurship bases.

In 2008, the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government issued the "Several Opinions on Supporting Hangzhou Normal University to Build a First-Class Comprehensive University", which strongly supported the construction and development of the school, and the school ushered in a golden period of career development. In 2020, the municipal party committee and government once again issued relevant documents to further support the school to accelerate the construction of a national first-class university. The school currently has 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point, 1 professional degree doctoral authorization point, and 1 doctoral talent training project serving national special needs; 25 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 18 professional degree master's degree authorization points, and has obtained the qualification of recommending outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduates without examination. Eight disciplines including chemistry, clinical medicine, botany and zoology, neuroscience and behavior, engineering, materials science, environment and ecology, biology and biochemistry have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, and the ESI comprehensive ranking has been among the top 100 in the country for many years. There are 13 provincial first-class disciplines (7 A-level and 6 B-level). The number of National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation projects ranks among the top universities in the province. Since 2012, it has obtained 3 national major scientific research program projects and national key research and development program projects. The university's natural index ranking has been among the top 100 universities in the country for five consecutive years. The school has always taken teaching quality as the foundation of the school, insisted on cultivating people with moral integrity as the fundamental task, inherited the educational thought of "personality first, five-pronged education", continuously deepened the reform of education and teaching, actively adapted to the needs of regional economic and social development, and vigorously promoted innovation and entrepreneurship education. The school's undergraduate teaching quality ranks among the top universities in Zhejiang Province. The school has a non-independent legal person Sino-foreign cooperative institution, Hangzhou Normal University Kharkiv College, and has established inter-school cooperation and exchange relations with more than 30 universities in the United States, Britain, Japan, Australia, Taiwan and other countries and regions. It has the qualifications to recruit and train international students in China and is the first batch of pilot institutions for the quality certification of studying in China.
