Zhejiang Normal University

Zhejiang Normal University is a comprehensive provincial key university with teacher education as its feature. Its predecessor was Hangzhou Normal College. It was established on April 16, 1956 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and upgraded to Hangzhou Normal College in 1958. In 1962, Hangzhou Normal College merged with Zhejiang Education College and Zhejiang Institute of Physical Education and was renamed Zhejiang Normal College. In 1965, Zhejiang Normal College moved from Hangzhou to Jinhua and was renamed Zhejiang Normal University in 1985. In 2000, 2001 and 2004, Zhejiang Finance School, Zhejiang Preschool Normal School and Jinhua Railway Driver School were successively incorporated. In 2015, the school was selected as one of the first batch of key universities in Zhejiang Province, and in 2020 it was awarded the second "National Civilized Campus". It is now composed of three campuses, Jinhua (main campus), Hangzhou (Wener Campus, Xiaoshan Campus), and Lanxi, and 20 colleges (including independent colleges).

Zhejiang Normal University adheres to the direction of running schools with Chinese characteristics and the fundamental task of cultivating people with morality, takes "improving quality, improving characteristics, and improving efficiency" as the main line, upholds the school motto of "striving for learning and practice, maintaining reality and innovation", promotes the "pragmatic, realistic, and solid" education tradition, implements the "characteristic, international, regional, and coordinated" development strategy, actively serves Zhejiang teacher education, regional economic and social development, and national strategic initiatives, strives to build a distinctive Zhejiang Normal University, a harmonious Zhejiang Normal University, a beautiful Zhejiang Normal University, a vibrant Zhejiang Normal University, and a happy Zhejiang Normal University, and strives to "build a distinctive first-class university".

The quality of talent training has been gradually improved. Since its establishment, the school has provided more than 300,000 outstanding talents of all levels and types to the society, of which 210,000 are working in the education system. Nearly half of Zhejiang Province's in-service special-grade teachers and principals of provincial key middle schools graduated from our school. The school's undergraduate teaching performance assessment and graduates' overall satisfaction with their alma mater are firmly in the forefront of undergraduate colleges in Zhejiang Province, and the overall employment rate of graduates has remained above 95%. There are more than 28,000 full-time undergraduate (specialty) students (including independent colleges), more than 7,000 graduate students (including 1,143 part-time graduate students), more than 3,000 international students, and more than 12,000 students of various types of adult higher education.

The disciplines are complete, with 70 undergraduate majors, 11 first-level doctoral programs, 1 doctoral professional degree category, 30 first-level master's programs, 16 master's professional degree categories, 7 postdoctoral mobile stations, and 2 national "111 Plan" discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases. Five disciplines, including mathematics, chemistry, engineering, materials science, and environment/ecology, are among the top 1% in the world in ESI, and 20 disciplines are listed as first-class disciplines in Zhejiang Province. It has 24 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 28 national courses, and 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers.

The faculty structure is reasonable, with 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 shared academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 Changjiang Scholars, 2 Young Changjiang Scholars, 7 overseas high-level talents, 5 National Thousand Talents Program talents, 6 National New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project talents, 2 National Outstanding Contribution Experts, 1 National Outstanding Youth Science Fund winner, 1 National Excellent Youth Science Fund winner, and 23 people enjoying special allowances from the State Council.

The scientific research and social service capabilities have been steadily improved, and the university has won 1 second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 34 outstanding scientific research achievements awards (humanities and social sciences) from the Ministry of Education, 8 outstanding achievements awards for national education and science planning, 20 major bidding projects of the National Social Science Fund, 36 key projects of the National Social Science Fund, 6 key projects of the National Natural Science Fund, 1 major research plan project of the National Natural Science Fund, 1 national key research and development plan project, and 2 national key research and development plan projects. It has 36 scientific research and innovation platforms at or above the provincial level, including 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial and ministerial co-constructed collaborative innovation center, 9 provincial key (engineering) laboratories, 3 provincial international science and technology cooperation bases, 3 provincial "2011" collaborative innovation centers, 2 provincial key research bases for philosophy and social science, 2 provincial new key professional think tanks, and 1 provincial new university think tank. 48 affiliated schools have been jointly built. Based in central Zhejiang, the university deepens strategic cooperation with Jinhua and actively promotes the construction of a province that is strong in reform, innovation, opening up and talents.

International exchanges and cooperation are constantly advancing. The school has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 280 colleges and universities or educational institutions in more than 60 countries and regions on five continents, and has established inter-school student exchange programs with more than 70 foreign universities. It has been selected as one of the "Top Ten Foreign Cooperation Units in Zhejiang Province" and the "Internationalized Characteristic Universities in Zhejiang Province". The school is the "Education Aid Base" of the Ministry of Education, the "China Basic Education Aid Training Base" of the Ministry of Commerce, and the "China-ASEAN Education and Training Center" of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. There are 5 Confucius Institutes, 1 independent Confucius Classroom and 1 Chinese Education Center overseas. It has been approved to establish the China-South Africa Humanities Exchange Research Center of the Ministry of Education, the International Chinese Education Practice and Research Base in Africa, and the Zhejiang Confucius Institute Teacher Selection and Training Center.
