Huzhou Normal University is located in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, a national historical and cultural city, the birthplace of Xi Jinping's concept of "Green water and green mountains are gold and silver mountains", and the birthplace of China's beautiful countryside.

The school's history can be traced back to the Qiantang Road Third Joint County Normal School in 1916. It began higher education in 1958 and began to recruit undergraduate students in 1994. In 1999, the former Huzhou Normal College, Huzhou Normal School and Huzhou Teachers' Continuing Education College merged to form Huzhou Normal University. In 2000, the former Huzhou Health School was merged into Huzhou Normal University. On February 6, 2006, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited Huzhou Normal University during his tenure as governor of Zhejiang Province, hoping that the school would "adapt to local conditions, reflect characteristics, and serve the local area" and "build a Huzhou Normal University with a certain influence, level, and status in China" as soon as possible. In 2012, it began to independently recruit master's students, and was approved as a master's degree-granting institution in 2018. In 2021, the independent college Qiuzhen College was converted into a public ordinary undergraduate college-Huzhou College. In the course of more than 100 years of schooling, the school has always adhered to the school motto of "understanding the body and achieving use", and gradually formed the spirit of the teacher's college of "hard work, self-improvement, tolerance and innovation, and liberal arts and practice". It has successively won the titles of National Civilized Unit, National Lei Feng Activity Demonstration Site, National Advanced Collective for Assisting the Disabled, the first batch of pilot universities of the National Excellent Doctors and Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents Education and Training Program, National Language and Character Promotion Base, Ministry of Education's Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture (Silk) Inheritance Base, and Zhejiang Province Application-oriented Construction Pilot Demonstration School.

Huzhou Normal University is a comprehensive university with excellent normal tradition and distinctive application characteristics. The school actively responded to the national "Belt and Road" initiative, established a Confucius Institute at the Azerbaijan State University of Languages, and co-built a cross-cultural research center with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. It has carried out close exchanges and cooperation with more than 60 colleges and institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, and currently has 239 international students from 35 countries including France, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc.
