Jiangxi University of Science and Technology was founded in 1958. It was originally named Jiangxi Metallurgical College. It was renamed Southern Metallurgical College in 1988 and Jiangxi University of Science and Technology in 2004. The school was successively affiliated to the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry and China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation. In 2013, it became a university jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Education. The school is an institution approved by the State Council to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees. It is a teaching and research university with engineering as the main discipline, combining science and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as management, economics, law, literature, art, and education. It recruits students and employment from all over the country and has the right to accept overseas Chinese, students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and international students. It is a Baosteel Education Award review university; the school has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduates to study for a master's degree without examination; it is an important talent training and scientific research base for my country's non-ferrous metal industry and steel industry, and is known as the "cradle of non-ferrous metallurgical talents."

The school runs schools in Ganzhou and Nanchang, covering a total area of ​​more than 2,600 acres. The school headquarters is located in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, a national historical and cultural city with the reputation of "World Tungsten City", "Rare Earth Kingdom", "Hakka Cradle", and "Red Capital". The school started undergraduate education in 1958, master's education in 1980, and doctoral education in 2013. There is currently 1 Department of Materials Metallurgy and Chemistry, 4 academic functional departments, 18 teaching colleges, and 18 scientific research institutes. There are more than 24,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 4,000 graduate students. Graduates are widely welcomed by the society for their wide professional adaptability and the characteristics of "honesty, solid foundation and down-to-earth work". The first-time employment rate and employment quality remain at the forefront of Jiangxi universities. In 2011, it was awarded the "Top 50" universities with typical experience in graduate employment in the country, and in 2017 it was awarded the "Top 50" universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. According to the ranking list of universities where CEOs of China's "Fortune 500" companies graduated, our school was tied for 5th in the list of universities where CEOs of China's "Fortune 500" companies graduated in 2012. The school has 1 national demonstration academician workstation, 2 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 1 postdoctoral research workstation, 2 first-level doctoral programs (mining engineering, metallurgical engineering), 22 first-level master's programs, 13 professional master's programs, 5 cross-level second-level disciplines, and 4 self-established second-level disciplines outside the catalog, including "Metallurgical Engineering", "Mining Engineering" and "Material Science and Engineering" 3 first-class construction disciplines in Jiangxi Province. The overall level of discipline construction is high, and 7 first-level disciplines are listed in the results of the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. In the 2019 Soft Science First-Class Discipline Ranking, Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering ranked 7th and 9th in the country respectively, among which Mining Engineering entered the top 100 in the world, and "Material Science", "Engineering Science" and "Chemistry" entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school is the first in the country to pilot the "3+1" innovative education model, focusing on cultivating students' hands-on ability and practical operation ability. Students have repeatedly represented Jiangxi universities in various academic, scientific, cultural and sports competitions at all levels across the country to achieve major breakthroughs and win important honors. In the National College Student Electronic Design Competition and Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, our students have achieved a breakthrough in Jiangxi Province's zero first prize in the country. In the past five years, more than 150 national first prizes have been won in important national competitions such as the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, and Robot Competition. It ranks 75th in the latest ranking of national general college subject competitions and ranks second in the province. The school's aerobics team has won more than 100 national championships and entered the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as the champion team in the Beijing Olympic cheerleading team selection. The school's rock climbing team has won more than 20 championships in international and domestic competitions such as the International Rock Climbing Masters, the World Cup Rock Climbing Competition, and the National Rock Climbing Championships, and has broken world records many times.

The university actively serves the nonferrous metal industry, steel industry and local economic and social development in my country, and continuously strengthens discipline construction and scientific research. It has built a number of strong disciplines such as mining engineering, metallurgical engineering, materials engineering, mechatronics, and information technology, and has formed four major characteristics and advantages in the comprehensive development and utilization of rare earth, copper, tungsten, and lithium resources. Emerging disciplines such as economics, management, science, and law are also becoming increasingly well-known in China. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 3,000 scientific research projects of various levels and types, including the National Key R&D Program, the National "863" and "973" Programs, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation, with a total research funding of more than 1 billion yuan; since 2008, it has won 6 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 first prize in the 8th Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, and 123 provincial and ministerial awards such as the First Prize of Natural Science in Jiangxi Province and the First Prize of Outstanding Social Science Achievements in Jiangxi Province. The school's scientific and technological services have achieved remarkable results, covering 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. Over the years, it has established close industry-university-research cooperation with more than 100 large and medium-sized domestic steel and nonferrous metal enterprises such as Aluminum Corporation of China, China Steel, Shanghai Baosteel, Jiangxi Copper, Zijin Mining, Tongling Nonferrous Metals, and Western Mining. More than 600 scientific research results have been adopted, generating huge economic and social benefits.

The school adheres to open education and actively expands international exchanges and cooperation. The school implements international joint training programs such as credit recognition, undergraduate and master student exchanges, and cooperative education with universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Japan, Australia, Russia, Thailand, and South Korea. The school is a receiving institution for overseas students, and has recruited students from 23 countries and regions for language, undergraduate, master and doctoral studies. The school was approved as a Chinese language education base by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and has held a total of 20 summer (winter) camp projects and overseas teaching projects, teaching more than 3,000 overseas students. In 2015, it was approved by the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language to co-build a Confucius Institute with Punjab University in Pakistan. Since its establishment, the Confucius Institute at Punjab University has been actively promoting Chinese language internationally and spreading Chinese culture. So far, 11 teaching sites have been built on and off campus, with 2,716 registered students, 5,393 HSK test takers, 81 cultural promotion activities organized, and a total audience of 40,200 people. In 2017, it was approved to cooperate with Punjab University to hold a "2+2" undergraduate education in electrical engineering and automation, which is the first overseas Sino-foreign cooperative education project in the province. The project is provided with a full scholarship by Three Gorges South Asia Investment Co., Ltd. Through the order-entrusted training model, a certain number of localized talents in power operation are reserved. These students will become the backbone of the construction of the "Belt and Road" and the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor". In 2018, it was successfully approved by the Ministry of Education to cooperate with Laurentian University in Canada to hold a 4+0 undergraduate program in "Mining Engineering" for Sino-foreign cooperative education. The school has cooperated with Monash University in Australia to establish the "Jiangxi University of Science and Technology Sino-Australian REEM International Research Institute", and with the University of Queensland in Australia to establish the "Jiangxi University of Science and Technology-University of Queensland High Temperature Process Joint Laboratory". In 2019, the school successfully obtained approval from the Ministry of Education to cooperate with the Russian Amur State University to hold a Sino-foreign cooperative education "Electronic Science and Technology" undergraduate 4+0 program. In addition, the school has also carried out scientific research cooperation with the University of Queensland in Australia on rare earth technology, Australian efficient grinding and efficient fine particle flotation technology, and has undertaken more than 10 international scientific and technological cooperation projects such as "Cooperative Research on Improving the Performance of Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles with DENKA BLACK Li Conductive Agent" (Japan), "Mining Informatization" of the Chambishi Copper Mine (Zambia), and "Research on Gold Extraction Process of Arsenic-Sulfur Refractory Gold Ore" (Myanmar).
